Any experience with this model: Sekonic L-308S Flashmate?

Recommend something different for around the same money or less?

Thank you in advance.

That's what I use and I love it. Small, does everything I need, can hold and operate everything with one hand, priced right.

If you are on a shoestring budget,  you can get a used Gossen Luna Pro for about $50.  It can meter both strobe and ambient light.

I currently have one of the Sekonic Dual Pros.  It is overkill since I only rarely use the spotmeter feature.

I absolutely loved the Minolta Model III.  Model IV is also good.  You could probably find these used at a very reasonable cost.

I have a Gossen LunaSix, very similar to the LunaPro ( both of which are more realistically had for 100$ or so, but sometimes you can find them as low as 50$. ) while they work as incident and reflective meters just fine off a 1.3v battery ( Can be adjusted using the zero set ), they are not much effective for being flash meters, in which case I use my Minolta Auto Meter IVf (you can bypass the popular problem by opening up the head and permenetly making it where it does not think it has a spot meter attachment on it, by taping one contact shut, and the other open, so yea thats a way to save a 250$ repair bill by Sony or Minolta, if you are never going to use the spot meter attachment.)

The problem with Mechanical Meters such as the Gossen LunaPro/LunaSix, and others like them (Selenium or otherwise) is that they can be very easily fucked up if dropped.

I have the Sekonic L-358 Flash Master and love it. Sekonic has a good rep and puts out some nice stuff. I bought into them based on reputation.

I would suggest spending some more money on a light meter that will last you a long time and will grow with you. There is no sense in buying a cheaper on only to spend the same amount later for the better version. I find long term higher prced investments in equipment save you more money in the end.

I have the 308 b which has worked flawlessly for almost 12 years.

It uses a double A battery and I could not be more happy with it.

It is small and easy to carry and unlike other small meters it reads out in 1/10 stops.

The new model has several improvements in it. (like the dome locks in place)

I have the more expensive Minolta IIII and leave it at home because of its size.

Both read the same.

It is a simple meter and easy to use and understand. The other features that the more complex meters have are mostly cool but not of real use.

By the way the only Sekonic meter I own is a Type L-VI, if you can guess which one that is. (it's tiny though).

If you spend a little more for the L-358, you will have the option to add a spot meter function later.  You can also add an internal card to trigger Pocket Wizard receivers so you can set & fire your studio lights without dragging around a sync cord between the flash unit & meter.  I own a 358 & love it.

Sorry, I don't know the line-up. I'm learning though.

I wouldn't worry about it, some folks who even know the line up probably won't know which one it is either.

I agree... The L-358 is great.  You should be able to add the wireless trigger for $50.  Not sure if that promo is still running.  Worth a look see.
