Has any one used a ring flash for fashion shots?

Yep.  Pretty much everyone.

Edit:  Sorry, that sounded harsh.  Ring flashes come and go.  I used one in the late Nineties for fashion for awhile.

I've seen a photo where one was used and it was very well lit and hardly any shadows. If I could justify the cash for one, I'd be all over it.

Same here, having a difficult time selling the theory to the boss (read: wife) cause I just got the 20d bout three months ago lol.

Rent it as needed. Ring lights are very cool (the pictures of jean bardot on my page are taken with one) and give a very particular look. Unless it is going to define your style or shoot with it every week, it's probably not worth 3K and cheaper to rent the few times you need.

the real value with ring lights that people often miss, is for fill light.

The plain ole ring effect is played out mostly, but still effective with the right setting.

Fill, nothing beats its subtlety if used right.

You know, I was just saying exactly this in another post. Possibly the best fill source known to man, except that if you like to move and recompose yourself and your model as much as I do, you have to keep re-metering with an assistant and that gets tedious.

There are also ways to use ring flash for the intense glossiness without the distinctive "ring flash" look with the halo shadow and all that.

Yes, I use it often...love the look.  And it's great for fill.
