Lots of fashion photographers use beauty dish.

Has larger and supposed to be better than beauty dish.

I had mine up. But, I'm deleting all my photos for the New Year, to make way for 2008 shots...so, I can't upload any at this time. If I come across one, I will.

www.alienbees.com has one for their light set up for really cheap, but you have to make sure you get the highest output strobe with it "the b1800".

I use it, its a great set up,

Unless you have $10,000. to spend on the Hansel Portable light and beauty dish, many fashion photgrapghers use it and it is also a very useful light when you want the attention to draw to the center its like creating a vignette without photoshop.

Make your own beauty dish.  I don't recommend this.

For a lot of my shots, it was my lighting of choice, I had a 24" dish (got stolen out of my car). Most of the time I just used the dish - sometimes a reflector also.

EDIT: None are in my portfolio.

This was shot with a homemade beauty dish attached to a novatron head. It is cool what you can do with a giant salad bowl and a pie pan and a little white paint.

By the way, the beauty dish was the only light used here.

I just got one for Christmas! The AB version.  So far I've only experimented with it on my wife and myself but I am impressed.  And so was she.  In about 5 minutes I took some of the best photos of her that I have ever taken!  Oh yeah, she wasn't wearing any make up at all and even she was happy with the way her skin looked with no photoshop.  I can't wait to play with it some more.  Maybe I can post some from that shoot l little later.

Someone said you have to use the AB Beauty dish at full power?? Bullshit. I use my beauty dish all the time and never at full power.

The AB dish is 22inches, works fine, but grids for it are $180 a pop.  Broncolor dish is 20 inches and grids are $100 from speedotron, of all places.  For me, the key component is the grid.

Was thinking of getting one as well. I'm curious, though, what the difference is between a beauty dish and a silver reflective umbrella, other than the ability to attach modifiers?

I use one quite a bit. This one is a 19" elinchrom dish balanced with fill (2:1) and ambient light.

Here's another one.  I only had the beauty dish for about 5 minutes and she wasn't wearing any make up.  What do you think?

I think the dish was too close so you blew out the highlights to expose most of the face.  I also don't think that a dish is the best modifier for split lighting.  I'd try it for butterfly or loop lighting.

In my opinion, beauty dish (even without any modifiers) controls spill light better and at least, when compared to small silver umbrella, has softer light (of course, when you keep it close to subject).

Hensel's don't cost $10k.

I use the Profoto 22" and absolutely love it. The easiest of all light modifiers to use on location. In the studio, I often trim it with a sock. Oh, image, in my port, girl sitting on tire w/sunglasses. Hand held by my lighting bitch on a boom arm. Too damn simple.

I'm addicted to my 22" beauty dish (AB). I never use mine on full power, but I've had some great outcomes from it. Here's a couple....

Here are  a few examples, all with grid several different dishes, I am not a huge fan of an unmodified mola, the spedtron blackline dish is my favorite followed by a hensel silver with deflector, not the grided one or at least not with a center grid,  I do not use dishes without grids unless I am outside using it as a sun from far away.   Broncolor makes a nice one also.
