Dubious Intentions

I'm looking at some lighting kits online and I'm torn between Alien Bee lights and now Britek.  Britek seems a bit more inexpensive, but I would like to hear any endorsements or concerns with their products before I make the leap myself.

Go with the Bee's.

We no longer sell Britek because of quality issues.

Another OK option is JTL.

Basic, Chinese made but work OK.

My first strobes were britek, I still have one, and still use it.  It's okay, not very advanced.   My model only has 2 power settings full and half.  If I was going to do it again I would spend the extra money and go with Alien bees.

I was wondering the same thing. I have been reading up on both. You can get a nice starter setup with britek on e-bay. So I wonder, will a $700 britek setup work for this newbie? AB setups are a bit more.
Mostly looking at the 400 - 440 units in both britek and AB's
I can't remember all the details, but both had the 10,000 + flash life.
Wattage was similar. Only thing was that the Alien Bee lights had the stepless power adjustment and the Britek has the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full power choices.

That link you have is for "hot lights" not flash. Is that what you want?

Photogenic lights are more expensive than Bees. They run about $515 a head new.

seriously though, tremendous output for such a small investment, if you ever move to a pack system you have the abs for background/hair lights (very lightweight)

oh, and the customer service is amazing

oh ya, and they never lose value, providing its in decent shape you can usually resell it for approx 75-80% of its initial cost

The key to buying a lighting system is future expansion in my opinion.  The initial investment may be higher but as you grow so can your lighting system.  So consider one of the well know pro systems and look into the accessories and potential for growth.

I seem to be in the minority here but I photographed Proms and Corporate parties for 5 years using Britek monolights and never had a failure or a bad photo.  If I did have a bad photo it was my fault and not the lights.  I shot over 10,000 images with the lights I had and they kept on going.

They are low budget, bare bones monolights but the bottom line is they work.  I sold my set to a college student who was glad he got them at the price I sold them for.

Do what is best for you and buy what YOU need and don't feel that you have to bankrupt yourself.  Good luck.
