Yes, they've been annoyingly common for about three years now.  Uggh.  I've seen three or four that are excellent, around a hundred that are decent and about two or three hundred that just suck.

I don't think so. Can't picture a caution tape photo that actually looked good.

Gas Masks were the new caution tape a couple of years ago.
The question is what's the new Gas Mask?

Should one find a gas mask ?

The trend did start about 3 years ago when a model went in to do a shoot with Chester Gasser. A well known photographer in the back woods of Virginia.

Well Betty Lou went in wearing her finest plowing outfit wanting to get some fine images for the towns calendar.

Betty Lou sat down on the pickle barrel, and Chester bent over at the pickle barrel and then that's when it all started. Chester let out the biggest noise heard ever in the county of Jasper.

Betty Lou fell over backwards. Now she has slopped pigs, been around chickens, cows, well you name it, she has been around a lot of farm animals but what came out of Chester's ass was nothing she ever smelled.

The event quickly spread around town. Locals and city folk spread the word about what happened. It wasn't long before Chester Gasser became known on youtube, myspace and just about any place the web travels.

Chester being a modest sort of fella, defended himself the best he could, saying he had a bad batch of beans but that didn't satisfy anyone. So what old Chester done was dig out his great grand daddy's gas mask left over from WWI.

From then on, anyone Chester worked with was handed the gas mask. The word spread and people who did not know the story, just thought it would be a cool look and so city folk picked up on it and the fad has continued to this day.

one word, yes. I hate gas masks in pics, they are not original or interesting and take a pic of a naked chick with a gas mask on is not artsy.

Perhaps if one lives in Mansfield, Ohio.

Gas masks were played out a long time ago.
I'm guilty of shooting a model in one last year. But I swear it was her idea and I was so distracted by um... my cameras that I didn't even notice she was wearing it until I started to edit the photos big_smile

As far as I am aware of,
The gas mask has many meaning and connections.

The caution tape really does not.

Gasmasks are timeless.

There was a market for gasmask fetish photos before the trend arose, and there always will be. Know why? They're sexy.

Caution tape is just cheap.

I dunno , I bought my first gasmask about 18 years ago. Being part of fetish performance art and the popularity of industrial and electronic music in nightclubs... it was a fetish, and a political statement.

Not unlike an  cross or pentagram  might be seen in a "metal" video.

If it is a photo trend now, well that is interesting. Several fetish photos from quite some time ago included gas masks, or funnel hoods that looked not unlike gas masks. or just plain interesting stuff that hid the face... there is a fetish in that and I have used them for years in fetish oriented "things" including  photos.

So maybe they have gone the way of the tattoo and peircing.... what was once significant of the underground/ outsider and risque... ahhh , not so much these days.

They were also not as easy to get me thinks. You had to know which army surplus would sell you one cheap , they often wouldn't move, so they were not often stocked.

Now you can find them all day on e-bay....

My thought is, no item is ever cliche'.  For me, how they are used dictates that.

For instance, there was a time when everywhere I looked someone was a "sexy" pixie or elf.  Dozens of little pointy ears and cute little outfits.  Easy to go how cliche', but then someone comes along and does something like this and it moves it to a whole new level:

I just worked on something similar. I'm worried they're not cliche enough and might actually turn out as good pics with caution tape. lol

Only if your inspiration is pure and has intent... if not .. then it looks " cliche' ". Caution tape on the other hand ,  always looks cliche' to me.
Cliche' of cliche'
I would like to stand behind a caution barrel on the highway... I mean, same dif' right???

It would still look cliche'
