I want to get some flags, but the branded ones I have found (arri) are pretty pricy.

Has anyone got ideas/plans for building some DIY ones, that attach to stands easily?

Just dont mix hot lights and left over pizza boxes. They like to burst into flames while hot.

Dont ask.

Check the discount bins at places like Joann Fabrics. I got 2 yards of 54" black canvas for $3.00

Use a staple gun to attach it to canvas stretchers (available from art stores for about $10).

Done!

College film project about 1980. Maybe you saw it, "Invasion of the Popcorn People"?

Still want more?

Foamcore and black craft foam (aka "foam paper"). Apply the craft foam to one side of the white foamcore. Treat the edges with gaffer's tape. Use spring clamps to attach to a stand. You can never have too many spring clamps....

Edit:  Somebody already beat me to it-lol.

On my last shoot I used  black foamcore and attached them to stands with clamps similar to the ones show above.  Seemed to do what I needed it to do.

Black foamcore, Gatorboard, or Corplast for rigid flags; black fabric and a wood, conduit, or PVC frame for ones that can break down. Scrims to reduce but not eliminate light can be made from window screening material.

A grip arm with head, a 'magic arm' or other articulated arm,  spring A clamps, a foamcore fork, gaffer grip clamp, clip clamp, or gaffer tape to attach it to a stand.

That is all that it has to do smile. I even used white foamcore for this (no black side). I had it mounted to the head of the tripod by means of a 1/4-20 tee nut in the center. I rotated the panel until I saw the shadow that I wanted on my subject.

I use window screening from any home, or hardware store. I usually clamp it to the front of my soft-box. If I need it to cut more light I'll double it up making sure to overlap the squares.
I started doing this because back in the 90's I found flags to be too pricy. Have been using them ever since.
I actually have them in every imaginable size to fit all my soft boxes and bare lights.
You can also staple them to a canvas stretcher frame, or cut out the middle of a sheet of foam core.

P.S.
Make sure you bet the black plastic kind, not the old fashioned metal kind
