Anyone ever shot at this desert before?  I looks like a great alternative to Mohave and Joshua tree for the So Cal folks.

landscape stuff, but not with models. if you are thinking of shooting now, you'd better do it at sunrise, or at sunset. otherwise your model will wilt.

go there in the spring when all the purty flowers are out!

or go to salton sea.

I have shot there, it has much more diversity than one might imagine. You MUST shoot there when it is not HOT. I would say between October, and April. The 15th image in my portfolio is on the way down from Julian headed toward Anza Borrego. I have never taken a model out there, like the last post, I have only done landscapes there. It is a very beautiful area. If you go through the town, you will come upon the tourist center, they will have a lot of information on where you can find the most exciting sites.

Go out in the spring when the wildflowers are blooming - nice way to add some color into the shot.

or shoot really early in the morning...or sunset. you'll need to have a model that can get ready in the dark, or 120 degree heat though.

Anza Borrego is where I go every year for flowers.  Go in February. Call first.
There's a wonderful book on hiking Anza Borrego.  I highly suggest getting it.  Remember, Anza is a low desert desert.  Very hot, even in spring and fall.  There's a reason the stars went to Palm Springs in the winter.  It's below sea level.  80 degrees in winter.

It's hot as fuck right now, but you can still go into the narrows here and there, and there are a few waterfalls.  Rattlesnakes only come out at night when it's this hot, or not at all.  Usually not at all, till it cools down.  They're nocturnal anyway.
Just wait till next January.  Scope out spots, then when they tell you the flowers are in full bloom, take the model.  There are flowers every year, just not the billions they have in a "bloom" year.  Anza needs a good rain in December, then once in January for a decent bloom.

Great location. Especially in the spring when the wild flowers bloom.
You will need a 4X4 to get away from the road. The dirt roads are mostly sand.

The Carrizo plain north of LA is spectacular too. It's closer than Anza Borrego. Kelso Dunes is just southwest of DV.

When you go, the best burgers in the world can be found at the little red diner just east of Christmas tree circle on the north side of Palm Canyon Drive.

Kelso is one of my favorite places on Earth.  I love it there.  Lizards, snakes, and sand sand sand.  The high peak is something like 650 feet above where you park your car.  Takes 45 minutes to walk there.  Last peak is a bitch to get up.  Two feet up, one foot down.  Steep sand.

Ha ha, the joke's on you, I go to L.A. twice a week, every week. Great Thai food at Ruen Pair, on Hollywood Blvd., just a few blocks east of the 101. I'll meet you there. A free dinner will suffice !

I remember growing up in the '50's in San Diego.  We would camp in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (before it became a State Park), at a campground called Agua Caliente.  We would only do this over the New Year Holiday because of the heat.

Some of my fondest memories is visiting Ghost Mn., or the Well of 7 Echos.
Beautiful location.  The last time I was there was the day Desert Shield turned into Desert Storm in Iraq.

Borrego.  A traffic circle with a drinking fountain and two liquor stores.

I'd shoot in the forest on the wet side of the hills.

I dont know if Id label that any kind of alternative to mojave or joshua tree, unlike either, its low desert, so the kind of flora and fauna you'll find there is completely different from what you see when you get above 3600 feet.  If you just need to shoot in a desert, dont limit yourself to a park, the entire southern half of the state is desert and there is amazing stuff everywhere.

Borrego is a fantastic place to shoot. There are some incredible mud hils just east on SR 22 just west of Salton Sea. When your done there go to Salton Sea and shoot on the east side. You won't be sorry.  Truly a mecca for shooting in that area.  If you ever decide to shoot there get in touch with me I spent a lot of time 4 wheeling on the weekends there an I know some pretty out of the way places that have some incredible shot possibilities.

More like the Anza-Borrego Badlands. Except in the spring. And a 4x4 is mandatory to get away from people. I'd say the Salton Sea (in the same area sort of) is a better choice.

I have several more, including from Borrego Hot Springs, which has a lot of neat cactus.
