Some models I work with would like to get jobs posing for artists/painters/sculptors; does anyone know where they can find work around Chicagoland, IL?

Some of them might go to WI if their expenses are paid.

I imagine they could contact some of the art schools in the area.

ETA: I'm guessing they're not on MM and can't come here and ask themselves?

Do the art schools hire their own, or do they go through agencies?  Are there agencies who do this as one of their specialties?

Pretty much any college with art classes.  Community colleges are a good place to start, just because there are so many of them.  But don't be afraid to check with places like the Art Institute or Columbia College.  The standards might be higher, but they also need a lot more models.

I doubt they'd need to deal with agencies, and in any case the models who do this type of work tend to thrive on volume because the rates are fairly modest... so there's no cushion to pay commissions.  The primary source for the schools is probably their own students, and the professional art figure models who approach them and tend to work at multiple schools.

I've been told that Oakton Community College will not hire their own students as nude models.

Please, if you know of anyone interested in posing for a painter(s), have her get in touch with me.  I seek models, and know some other artists who do occasionally as well.

I'll tell some of them to contact you.  Please let me know if you work anything out with Terressa , Kourtney, Coco, Karen, Conquita, Trudy, Gwen, Latithia, Agatha, Elizabeth.  I don't collect any fee for this; I'm just trying to help out some friends.  If this works out, I'll try to send you more.

Chicago is a weird city for work. It's hit and miss but there is a lot of talent there regaurdless. I always drive there so i'm available to work anywhere in and around the city, including Wisconsin.

As for artists/painters it seems its a small market but they are there. I'd try art schools first and go from there.

It's too cold to go there now! I'll try my hand in March/April-ish. tongue

I've found some possible work from craigslist. Possible in that I've been hired, and the artists seem legit, but the scheduled session is still down the road. I'm confident everything will go well though.

craigslist has numerous listings, though it is a bit of a hassle to shift through them and find the good ones. But something to check out anyway.

Do you live far from Skokie.  It might be nice if you can keep in touch with some of the models I work with.  Maybe you can all exchange info on where to get jobs.  It might be nice if we could come up with a rating system for artist models jobs in the Chicagoland area.

Well, I'm still in the process of figuring out the best places to look for jobs myself.
I don't mind networking, but I would rather do it through MM. If the models you work with can join MM (or already have) have them get in touch with me through my profile.

Based on what I've observed on Craigslist, and what models have told me, I'd urge being extremely careful. Many of the ads for models on CL are unethical at best, some are downright dangerous. CL, interestingly, has a really odd system, in which legitimate ads can be cancelled by anonymous readers, and the really bad ads don't seem to get cancelled. Although this weird "mob rule" censorship has been much criticized, the famously obnoxious founder of CL has responded with the proverbial middle finger.

I do not know.  I'm not an art nude model.

Why aren't they doing their legwork themselves?  That's a huge part of being a successful model...

Do they have any experience being an artist model? It is a unique skill and more difficult then many think.

There are a number of drawing groups in the area and they hire their own models, and usually looking for good models. I've not been to all of these but know people (artist) who have.

The Palette & Chisel
http://www.paletteandchisel.org/

I know the peter Jones has weekly figure drawing and uses new models all the time.

There is a new group called Brimstone Drawing Club Chicago looking to hire pin up models to draw.

The Skokie Art Guild

Evaston Art Center

I believe the Art Institute and American Academy hire there own models.

I know some other people who look for models (like myself). If you could send me some more info about the models I can pass it along.

Do they have jobs for models who are 44 years old.  Please check my profile and tell me what you think.

As far as I know, artists models don't have many requirements.  Your best bet is to call them yourself and ask what their requirements (if any) are for models.

I agree, just call or send them an email. Each place probably has their own requirements, but I don’t know what they are.

There’s no hard and fast rules or strict look for artist models. It all depends on the focus of the artists or place. Places like the Art Institute, the American Academy and Palette & Chisel will be tougher to get into. They look for models that understand their own anatomy and can create exciting poses. For example a class may be focusing on the back one day and will want a pose that shows movement and specific muscles.

Smaller groups are much more open to all shapes and sizes as well as experience levels. Most of the artists are there to practice or enjoy it as a hobby. I know Pete Jones uses a lot of new models.

Knowing how to move for gesture poses (a series of 30 second up to 5minute short poses allowing the artist to warm up, lasting about half an hour) is important. Those with dance or yoga or who just know how to pose dynamically will do better. We’ve seen basic standing and sitting a thousand times. wink

A model also needs to know what kinds of pose they can hold for hours. A session may be about three hours. Starting with 25-minute block of gestures and five 25-minute blocks of one pose with breaks in between. If you can only hold the pose for two 25-minute blocks because of your back or legs and can’t do any more and need to change your pose, odds are you won’t be back. A big mistake models make is locking their legs in a standing pose. They’ve been known to pass out.

There is an artist everybody studies for anatomy named George Bridgman. I would suggest finding one of his books. If you can pose like his drawing when he talks about balance and rhythm you’ll have a big advantage. Plus it will show what we’re trying to learn and why we need live models.

I’ve never drawn a pregnant model but it would be interesting. Contact some places/groups. It’s pretty unique and I imagine would be very welcome.

All good suggestions.  My 2 cents.......

I was at the Art Institute in 1980-81, but I doubt if they're standards have changed much.  We had a wide variety of shapes, experience in models, overweight, underweight, professional and student.

College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn had Figure drawing as well.  The best thing is for the models to contact each school on his/her own and get the info.

Also, while I'm not a member, the DuPage Art League in downtown Wheaton has figure drawing classes, and I there is one in Naperville.  Again, as Rachel suggested, part of a model's job is to find the work.

Finally, we have a LOT of figure photographers in the area that host and/or sponsor workshops.

Do you still hire figure models for your pinup work?  Some models have told me they would like to start out posing for artists/painters/sculptors  before they will feel comfortable posing for photographers.  Some beginning models worry about what photographers will do with the photos; there seems to be less concern with sketches and paintings.

never hired a model for a sit-down myself, and as I am not a photographer, I get permission from the model or the photgrapher to use the photo

Palette and Chisel, on Dearborn, has 30 hours of open sessions a week and always hire models.

You can also go to CHicago Artist Coalition's web site and browse artists by medium and often find their e-mail addresses.

The best advice for models wanting to do figure study work in any city is to contact the local art schools and colleges that offer figure study classes..... they will make connections from there.   ; )
