A few of these popped up on another post, and got me to thinking about the worst visual cliche's we see in the galleries of seasoned pros and rank novices alike.  List your worst cliche's.... we can take it.

Here are a few to get you started:

-- The "American Beauty" re-creation shot (rose petals, bathwater)
-- For that matter, any flower petals on nudes
-- The caution/police yellow tape bikini
-- Belt across the nipples
-- Fake blood in a tub
-- The "shy" pose (one arm across the breasts.. the implied nude special)
-- Anything with angel wings
-- Licking a sawblade
-- Self-given frontal wedgie/camel-toe
-- Heavily back-lit sillhouettes in black & white with the head and feet cropped out

Which is not to say that any one of these can't be done well (even my gallery has a 'shy pose' in it: https://www.modelmayhem.com/pic.php?pic … 0d727673dc ) but when approaching the above you need to proceed with extreme caution (and not just caution tape.)

I'm sure I'm missing quite a few... fill me in!

For me..probably the caution tape photos because it gets me wondering what's being cautioned...are ther herpies under that tape or is it really a guy under there? - you know sick thoughts like that pop up in my head and we can't have that!

How many poses are going to be truly original though?
At some point all poses will be covered, all photos will be covered and ANYTHING done ever after will be a copy.

I dont mind the cliches actually, I prefer them with a bit of a twist voyerstically but its often the model I then look at to see if they give something "extra"that makes the pose their own.

GOOD POINT! Pretty much any pose is a repeat by now but that doesn't mean we can't all put our best into them....A great image is a great image....I look to the impact it has on me and my heart...not on whether some one else has posed in a similar fashion....art is in the eye of the beholder.

Darn...these were the only GOOD ideas for shoots I have come up with so far.  (Except for the saw blade one...that one never dawned on me.)

By the way.

If you have fillings(you Amercians all have perfect gnashers anyway) FORGET the licking a saw pose.

WHY it made them scream in pain I have no idea but it did..0_o

I don't need to see any more single light source from the side against a black background images.  I think letting the off-side fall into shadow against a black background is a lost opportunity to define shape.  Throw another light in there, folks.

All nudes need to be done with extreme caution - there are too many poorly done nudes cliche' or not.

you forgot the legs together candies in the crotch shot.  If that doesn't say "eat me" I don't know what does.

This only bothers me when its done for no reason - other than the model "doesn't do nudes". Otherwise, keep your shirt on.

Oh - and non-pornographic spread shots that end up looking like porn. Why????

"Belt across nipples"

UUUURRGH that annoys me slightly  when  women do that, But Makes me want to RIP IT OFF when men do it.  Its fairly commom pratice for certain cosplay characters, but looks stupid as can be.

Guys should not be trying to hide thier nipples, it makes them look like women.......

also if I see one more guy with thier penis in thier hand so that its an implied nude......

I don't want to see it, but I also don't want to see you hiding it like its something to be sought after.

No kidding.  There is always new stuff to be added.  My least favorite cliche' is the bored photographer act who's "been there, done that."

I just don't understand why we must run through the same list of overused shots every 3-4 weeks. If you don't like it, move on! Take some shots you think are interesting (though someone else WILL consider them cliche'). Why get all worked about something that isn't hurting anyone?

I really hate the ones with the pillowfights.

And the ones with the models covered in axle grease wrenching on a hotrod.  And the ones where the model is superimposed on the top of the Chrysler Building.  Oh yeah, and the one where the nude male model is being fondled by the female in business dress.

Every 2-3 weeks is not often enough. Let's start a new thread every day!

Anything with a teddy bear.

Anything that has the whole picture desaturated with just one part (such as lips) in color.

Anything with guns.

I seldom lie.  Ok this time I did.  I think an old Richard Warren picture got that scene in my head and it's never gone away.  Or it might not have been his, but it was in a book with some of his photographs that impressed me.  Being old sucks - memory isn't as good ... well it's never been really good...

No, my defense is that I've been drinking a lot.  Total dissatisfaction raises its ugly head again.

But the blog is flourishing.

Well, hopefully when we meet I can schedule you for a dissatisfaction biopsy and possible surgery. The results of such an intervention makes good fertilizer.

Or three of them.

I completely fail to see the need to get worked up to the point of hatred over an image that doesn't grab me.  Just move along to the next one, it's not that big a deal.  wink

Depands how the cliches above you mentioned are shot.

Years ago I saw an amazing B&W shot of what you call "The caution/police yellow tape bikini" in an abandoned building. It was simply stunning. Far more creative then shooting the usual pretty blond/brunette shot in a studio or on a road side place.

For me shooting, to your face simpllistic beauty/nude pin-up shots are more cliche then anything.

What makes an image successful? In my humble opinion, if you can create a strong emotion (positive or negative) or make people stop, think & talk about it, you got it.

Cheers,

Hera Bell
