I am pretty new in the LA area and would like to see if any of you who lived here a bit longer could point me to a direction- besides East wink - to help me a find a secluded desert location where one won't get bothered to much by anyone. I want something that is preferably very close to LA or OC. Looking for either sandy or dry cracked soiled desert but definitely not one full of shrubs of any kind just plain and flat and dry with no obstructions.

Could you please help to give me some ideas that would work for a day shoot?

Thank you!

Niki B.

With out going east I really dont see how you are going to have much luck at all.... by chance you change your mind about going east you can look into 'Ocotillo' 'Gordons Well' 'Glamis' 'Borrego'  or 'Plaster city'

I think she meant give more directions than "just go east".  Anyway, to the OP, not sure what your idea of close is, but one dry lake bed that gets shot at alot is El Mirage in the high desert.  It's in the town of Adelanto, and i think it's about 2 hours away from LA, but google it you'll find it.  Lots of info on the web about it.  I did a real casual shoot there a few years back w/o any hassles, not sure how it is now, if there are rangers or anything patrolling.  Good luck.

You have to go east, north east or south east.... El Mirage, El Centro, Anza Borrego, Mojave etc are all easterly from LA.

You will need permits for Anza & El Centro as they are NPS, BLM or State Governed... & yes they check!! I have shot all over SoCal's Desert & have been regularly asked for permit paperwork... El Mirage & Mojave are less patrolled....

North on the I-5
North on I-14

at this point you will be heading towards the Antelope Valley...first there is Palmdale, then Lancaster, then Mojave, Take your pick once past Lancaster...all open after that.

Yet still close enough to get basic supplies.

If you're going off-road, even a little bit, take extra water, communications, all that stuff we know but we never do. The high desert is EXTREMELY rugged country, and it is very easy to get into trouble.

I remember a brief shoot with a model, just east of Palmdale. After half an hour the girl was woozy and I was getting a little punchy, too. This was late summer, early afternoon.

Have fun.

it's not what you want to hear, but...um...

east.

seriously.  you'll pass all sorts of desert.  you can pull over somewhere in the middle of the road and have an awesome shoot.  if you're there at the right time in the middle of the day, it'll be 5-10 minutes before another car drives by.

If you have the leisure to be exploring, consider the drive across from Temecula to the Salton Sea. Very scenic, and huge variation in terrain as you go across.

One of the most famous film locations for these types of shots is El Mirage dry lake:

There is a location out in Victorville that might be exactly what you are looking for.  It is a dry lake bed that has cracked soil and very few to no shrubbery at all.  I have shoot there a few times over the last couple of years and love the place.

You can get a hold of Jody Kovac (MM #371022) and see if she is willing to give you directions to the place.  However, I know she likes to be hired for shoots and will take Photographers there to shoot her.

These are a couple of images of Jody modeling at the place that were shoot by other Photographers that will give you a pretty good look at the place:

Hope this information helps and Good Luck with your search!

My shots of Damianne were done in Palmdale/Lancaster.  It's barren enough you won't likely get bugged by anyone.

Palmdale would probably be the closest option if you don't want to head east for ~ 2hrs or more.

El mirage can be fun, if you know when to go there is no one around. They sometimes close the lake bed to vehicles in the winter.

While you are at it, Jody is an excellent model to hire and has been modeling in the high desert for a very long time. Long enough to be on a first name basis with the officers in the area, that just might get huffy, if you are caught there with a different model.
