You'll need a fast shutter speed obviously if you want to capture any leaps or jumps.

EDIT:  a fast shutter speed is needed if you want to freeze action.

I have a list of ballet images here: https://www.modelmayhem.com/list.php?list_id=142299

i did something different and used a slow shutter.  it was an experiment but the dancers' parents ordered a lot of prints.

I was just going to say you have to check out Sarah Silver's website... she's outstanding and does some incredible dancer work.

http://sarahsilver.com/

Go to her section: 04. Movement

It's amazing!

How does he do it?  The light looks ambient but he must be using fast shutter speeds and flash the freeze the subjects.  They are all very sharp.

thanks for the props. i think silver used continuous lighting and somehow flashed the subjects at the end of the movement.  i think i will email her asking how and if she responds will let you know.

Yeah, with your shots, I loved the way you can see the motion of the dancers in a still shot.

remember that, post-shoot, a dancer is going to be for far more than 'just a pretty picture'; those of us who've danced will forever look at technique/execution and often come across as far more critical than, say, other models looking at their own work ...

have fun & enjoy!

I remember seeing a photo once of a group of ballet dancers and one girl wearing ballet boots.

Was kinda cool./

Maybe this isn't the type of ballet you are looking for, but here is a nocojoe original for inspiration anyway:

This one is awesome!  It is so creative.  And the model's balance isn't half bad either.
