New top level domains available for web sites!
So the good ones are available as of today: .camera, .gallery, .photography, .graphics, .lighting, .equipment. I was able to snag a couple: sleepyweasel.photography and had some fun with a subdomain to get sleepy.weasel.photography. From the host I used, they were $16.88/yr to purchase (and just forward to my existing site, so no additional cost). Anyone else plan on indulging? Feb 12 14 09:24 am Link I will, for sure. I'm not getting any results from my registrar's search, though they have the new domains listed as being available today. Edit: whoops, found it Edit again: all the best stuff is already taken Hm, the domains I want are listed as taken everywhere, but available at GoDaddy for extortionate prices. Fuck GoDaddy, this is exactly why I left them. Feb 12 14 09:35 am Link I grabbed mine at Namecheap for 16 bucks. GoDaddy wanted 24 for the same thing. www.daveproctor.photography Feb 12 14 11:37 am Link Thanks for the heads up, I had forgotten those were coming out today...I just grabbed the one I wanted. Feb 12 14 11:49 am Link To clarify, the domains that are listed as taken on Namecheap and 1and1 are on sale at GoDaddy for $399. Feb 12 14 12:54 pm Link I used Namecheap as well for mine. I figured some models might snag .gallery, or the digital retouchers might take .graphics? Or .camera for photographers? I think .photo might be on the way soon, but it seems redundant to .photography. Feb 12 14 02:55 pm Link No one else has jumped on one of these new domains? Feb 13 14 04:58 pm Link Soooo much more typing. No way! Also, not something people are familiar with or will be able to remember as easily. Not only does it make the web address long to type but the email addresses too. .COM is the way to go! All of that said, I do understand the need for additional TLDs and am glad there is versatility out there for some. I know when .cc and .ws etc etc were all getting marketed years and years ago, some people snatched those up but still, they never really caught on and just lead to confusion. If at all possible, stick with .COM, add a hyphen to your business name if you have to... I went with OwenImages.com (using my last name) to allow for versatility as it is hard to guess the precise path your art will take you in the years or decades to come. I could do photography of course, photo editing, digital creations, video is a stretch but I could go there with it...any type of imagery. I think it worked for the best in my case. My 2 cents. Feb 13 14 10:49 pm Link I obviously still have my dot-com, but my new web address is actually shorter: sleepyweaselphotography.com vs. sleepy.weasel.photography But I disagree it's not memorable. Many might be able to get shorter domain names now if their desired dot-com was previously taken. Feb 14 14 06:38 am Link |
