We see them everyday on MM. They are the concepts we often started with because we didn’t know any better. Some of us still dip into these categories, if only to try to redefine them. See if you can add to the list below.

This is not to say that cliché concepts are bad; some can look fantastic. It’s all about the execution. And if you think you’ve reinvented the wheel by transforming a cliché into something more, attach a link to your image (noting 18+ as appropriate) with an explanation. And remember that this isn’t a critique forum, so play nice.

THE CLICHÉ LIST:
Railroad Tracks
Caution Tape
Hand Bra
Sitting on window sill
Model flipping off the camera
Wrapped in a chain
Black tape over nipples
Angel wings
Whipped cream or candy over privates
Mountaintop with windblown fabric
Hugging Guitar
Only wearing necktie
Milk pouring over chest
Covered in rose petals

Yeah, and "model without clothes" is quite popular on MM too.  big_smile

Agreed. A cliched concept ceases to be a cliche when a creative photographer and/or model take it in a whole new direction.

- I think this one is new, seen it over the last year, A nude girl, her upper body on the floor while her legs on a seat, it looks like a "broken" body, hard to explain tho.

- Nude girl in a box.

- Nude girl in dryer machine or at the laundromat.

- Nude girl in fridge.

- Nude girl laying on front seat of a car.

- Girl with Scarf almost covering her head - I like this look tho, I can't have enough of it.

- Girl in very revealing Football outfit, oh, wait, I have one, Oops!

The funny thing about cliches is that they often sell better than the non cliche. People often like to buy what they're used to seeing and stay away from things that are new or different.

is it cliche or just tried and true methods? or is it simply mass appeal?

we pose a particular way because it works. We use certain compositions because they work. we process in styles because they work.

creativity is very hard to come by, so we all fall back onto what we know works. the difficulty is breaking out of that mindset.

Yep.

The trick with clichés is to do them better.

I shoot models to test lighting, makeup works, and for the hobby side fun of it. If it falls into a cliche so be it. I just do what I like.

I shoot nude girls in a box all the time.  :-P

How many girl with snake photos existed before Avedon's 1981 shoot with Nastassja Kinski???

They made it to cliche status because people liked the concept in the first place.

Also, take a look at the 'ultimate cliché list'. It lists over 100 so-called cliches, organized by category, and has a list of many of the other MM cliche threads. A sizable portion is glamour.

The earliest ones I'm aware of were in the early 1940's, right in the middle of WWII (Edward Weston's Civilian Defense (18+) and a few others. Then is not now.

I think you have good point there. From the general masses point of view, this is all they know -Cliche-! From our point of view, we are exposed to a lot of various looks and poses, they are familiar to us and we do them all the time, it is just much wider pool  of cliche for us to chose from. It safe for us, like a narrow pool of looks is safe for them.

An earlier poster mentioned the Avedon/Kinski snake poster. This is emblematic of why photographers start copying pop icons. That image was created by a top fashion photographer, a sensuous actress in her prime, an editor, MUA, probably an art director, and studio assistants. Now I wonder why the average model/photographer team can't come close to that impact? When "Batman" came out how many "creative" types imitated the Heath Ledger makeup? Those images were not initially cliché but everyone who attempted to reference them using inadequate art and inspiration were.

By the way, I often will do at least one shot of a model covering her breast while topless so that I am "covered" and can supply a similar image with no nipple exposure. For the same reason I try to mix up vertical and horizontal compositions: more choices to provide a client.

Milky bathtub
naked on rock in desert

And i'm going to go out on a limb with this one, but... "terrible photo on purpose" i.e. mock polaroid, out of focus, etc.

Exactly, and you can add animal trainer to that list.

However, The photographer himself referred to that photo as a happy accident.

Sometimes photographers are blessed with happy accidents. Being a master in your field and surrounding yourself with the right people/animals increases the likelihood that such an accident will occur.

As far as being a master in your field, that's up to you. The remainder is a concept I call 'stacking the deck.'

Cheers!

Well, for the mirror cliché, I'm in...
What I often see here in France is the 'nude in an abandonned place', factory or the like. Sometimes models say on their profile that they'd love to shoot on 'an original location, like an abandonned factory'. I wonder how often women walk around naked with high heels in such places. Maybe I should check abandonned places more often :-)
