I have had several queries regarding Fashion shoots. Before I proceed, never pay over the standard editorial rate for a model when shooting for a "magazine" or as a "submission to a magazine". Tariff A is around $120-200 USD per day. Not more than that. I say magazines because editorial is in its self a form of free large scale promotion for all of the team members involved.

Anyone charging more is taking advantage of you. Nonetheless here is my advice in several essays:

Wisdom from a master...

The hair stylist has already begun and usually starts before the make up artist. This is done to avoid possible smudging of the work that has been executed by the make up artist. The two of them discuss what they will be doing and then call in the photographer and the stylist to give us an over all view of what the model will look like.  This is done to avoid any misunderstandings. Re-doing  hair and make-up is a nightmare and will usually take another two hours of precious time.

As a makeup artist I cherish the thoughtful concern for appropriate staging of hair/makeup... and embrace having close coordination between vanity services... experience is a brutal teacher here...

All the best on your journey Ben...

When I saw the title I thought it was someone asking for advice, then I saw who the poster was and knew I would learn something. Thanks for posting.

That is for a Day. The editorial is what gets them the big Advertising Campaigns for 10+K per day.

Or in other words Benjamin's post could be read as; it's a lot less expensive to hire a legit agency model than a model of a web site such as MM.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.  So much in common with film production. (commercial and narrative)

Well, sort of. It helps if you are Benjamin Kanarek, then you get the editorial models for an editorial rate. In the immortal words of Mel Brooks, "It's Good to be the King!"

Good post. Pay attention folks, this is a for real fashion photographer, who I have already noticed on this site.

The one caveat, is Europe and the U.S. are a little different. Europe has more latitude, in styling than the U.S. as a rule.

Thank you very much for sharing. I really admire you, your work is fantastic!
There's something I've always wondering about editorial works: how much time do the magazines give to a photographer to realize a fashion shoot? Do they tell you the exact days to shoot or you can decide?
Supposing they want the photos for the september issue, when will they contact you? And when will they want the photos (after a week, two weeks, a month...)?

-Usually one day for a 8-12 page story. Sometimes two days if you are on a trip. In that case you may shoot for several issues.

Do they tell you the exact days to shoot or you can decide?

-The decision for the day of the shoot is based on Model, Stylist H & MU artist availability.

Supposing they want the photos for the september issue, when will they contact you?

-If it is for a September issue it is the Fall Winter Issue that is shown previously in March and would be shot in May to July.

And when will they want the photos (after a week, two weeks, a month...?

-Usually they want the images 2 weeks to 4 weeks before publication. Usually the later.
