I'm curious to know how many models and photographers have names other than their own. If so, have you ever changed your alias? I am fighting with the idea of changing names. I'd like to have a different alias but I'm not so sure its a good idea because a lot of people know me by this name now. What do you think?

"D. Brian Nelson" is my name.  My first name is sorta goofy, so I dropped it for the web.  Nevertheless, I sign everything...

P.S.  There might be some goodness in preserving privacy of models by using a pseudonym, but I haven't figured out why photographers do it.

It depends on who is looking for me at the time.........that dictates the alias I use.

Kidding, kidding.....

I think photographers do it so their name is cooler...that and a lot of photographers have secret alter ego personalities, and they like to show it. As a model, my initial idea was to have a pseudonym as a goof, I was making up an omp account, and he said...I have a name, Lapis Lazuli. I am a jewelry designer, and that is a great name, so originally I was Lapis Lazuli, but dropped the lazuli cause no one knew it anyway. I still sign my letters K.

For security, I can understand why women may want to change names, but please do it when starting your career!  I've had two models change their names, and it's hard to keep track of them as listed in a photo database.  This could result in lost sessions (pay) for the model.  One way around that may be to say your are now "Mary Mild (formerly Betty Bigteeth)".  If a model goes this route, I suggest: Keeping the name change listed for about a year, and contact old photographers, informing them of the name change.  This could be the same as getting a new email addy, and letting everyone know about the change.

Doug Harvey...Name I was born with...For the models, having an alias is not bad, but I would stick to the one that you have been using...

Sort of a later thought here, but in California using any permutation of my legal name means I don't have to file a fictitious name statement when doing business.

I kept getting errors when signing up, and when I finally got through with my name, Gabriel, it said it was already in use (??). Then I think it failed again when I added "76" to my name... I got frustrated and went for my sportbike-forum SN, which has NEVER been "in use" on any forum I ever went to, and it went through.

But in my profile, my real name is on there (see the Website link). I'd still like to go with Gabriel, but it's no big deal. Anyway, no GWC alter ego here :p

It's understandable that models want a layer of separation with an alias, but I wish they would at least put their real first name in the "about me."  It feels ridiculous sending a modeling inquiry to "synsikkillerblood."

My boyfriend insists all his models use aliases, for safety...

And I have considered changing mine, but that would be really stupid after using it for four years. Unless I wanted people to think I was someone else.

All of the models who pose for me either use an alias or their first names only...  then again, I'm doing adult photos, so it makes sense.

Stage names are a part of the business... heck, even I have one.  smile

I shoot and do business under a "porn name". My login name is the same one I've been using for a decade on every web forum and usenet group I frequent - didn't see any reason to change.

I'm too much the typical photog. My name is Steve. Isn't every photog's name Steve? I kid, obviously, but there has to be more Steve's that are shooters than any other name out there for cripes sake. I just used the title of my fav Steely Dan tune. I live by the lyrics, so it was only fitting.

Hee hee, there are a lot of Steves out there behind the camera, and a very large number of Jennifers and Jessicas in front of the camera to go with them...  wink

Nothing's wrong with an alias, long as it doesn't sound like a porn name or some crappy pet name.... Unless you're in the porn industry. lol

Great name! That's one of my favorite stones! haha

Anyway, back to the thread... I know a few photographers that just prefer to use their nicknames since they prefer the informality of it I guess.

I use my partner's last name because my given last name is hard as hell to spell and even harder to pronounce.  I don't know too many people who can't manage "Robinson"...much simpler.

Nobody but family has called me by my real name since I was like 10. Growing up in "da hood" nobody could pronounce my real name so I picked up the nickname Envy...plus I was tired of all the food references-my real name is a specific type of a certain vegetable, my mom had no clue when she named me:)
Now I know when I get a phone call asking for my real name, it's usually a telemarketer!

I went by my normal name but then people just shortened it to RO without asking. So it stuck.

LOL - Although there are producers (like me) who would prefer the model's stage name be something very typical as opposed to something that implies the adult industry...

It's taken me over 30 years to get over being named "Melvin" in the first place [thanks a lot Mom and Dad] so why would I bother perpetrating some ficticious name now?  Besides, Melvin Moten Jr. is pretty hard to forget...Once you hear it, it's stuck in your head for awhile.

Actually, I do have a writing pseudonym that I post fotos under from time to time...I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

My real name is BENJAMEN  but I hate for it to be shortened to ben, benny, benji. etc and only 1 in 10 people respect that. I have reason to use Cspine as my alt name and it isn't to be 'cool'.

My real name is long and girly and pretentious, not to mention Russian.
A three letter name of an obscure Greek goddess is much easier, and amusingly goth.

Your name is your brand. In any business, name recognition is everything. I routinely tell people that want to see my work to do a google search on my name.

Why anyone, especially a photographer, would use anything but their real name or studio name in everything they do is beyond me.

To be completely honest, everytime I see a photographer using anything but his name or studio name, I know he is not legitimate because if he were, he sure as heck wouldn't be hiding his identity.

Models should think the same way. Use your name or a variation that you stick with permanently. And try to make it professional. After all, your name is your image and image is what is going to get you hired. Cutsie pie, made up names just make the person using it sound like a ditzy high schooler.
