Hi all you women out there-
I know this might be a little TMI, however it's come up a few times and I am wondering what others do about this issue. As someone who does a lot of artistic nude shots, I am at a loss whether to do these shoots when I have my period. I know, a string might be easily photoshopped out of the picture or the legs might be able to be kept otgether in the shots to hide it. Do any of you do this, or just reschedule? Do you tell the photographer (esp. if he is male) that this is the case or just say "I'm busy that day"? I don't want to scare anyone off, but would still like to be honest and open with whomever I'm working with. Please advise!!

well, if you know roughly what time each month you're due, maybe try to originally schedule for a nude not during those days?

if its not possible, I'm sure the string would be fairly easy to hide/ edit out.

i'd tell the photog tho, male or not. they hate the "i'm busy" thing!  just mention "women's business", lol!

Well,  I generally don't like to schedule shoots during my period. I like to sit at home, eat chips, drink soda and watch the talk shows....that's what I do....

Okay, seriously, you can PS the string out if your doing nude. If there's an accident and you notice it, just say something and if you can't work around it, reschedule. If it's lingerie, there shouldn't be string worries, most gals 'tuck' it, if you know what I mean. If they wear pads, I have no answer for ya.

I started in the middle of a shoot before and I was wearing white pants. Yeah, you can see in the pics the small spot. I PSd it out and used a few. If I can find time, I will post one or two. Not a before pic, but the after and we'll play guess wher the spot WAS.

I think most photographers understand (to a certain degree) the monthly visit. We are all very used to working with women. I find that models tend to be a little irritable and grumpy, are overly sensitive about abdominal swelling, and generally don't want to be photographed much during their period. I find it is a perfectly valid reason for rescheduling a shoot. JUST DON'T DO IT LAST MINUTE! Also be prepared to be replaced. As much as we understand, we still have a job to do and often a deadline to meet.

As far as shooting nudes, if you are comfortable. Just tuck it in. Works like a charm.

I know when mine are going to happen, so I generally do not schedule shoots during them.  If it's unavoidable though, I drink a lot of water, avoid salt & caffeine to minimize bloating... and then grin & bear it.  I don't do nudes, so there's not really a lot to worry about besides maybe a few facial blemishes to cover up.

Just cut the string off. Preparation-H works wonders on puffy areas like eyelids and cheeks.

Some razor-thin models actually look better with a little monthly swelling here and there, especially if they've lost a lot of weight recently and their skin is still slightly loose.

I try to schedule around it, but that's not always possible.  Hiding the string isn't that hard, but some photographers (particularly men) get a little freaked out about it. It's almost cute.

This very issue happened with me just recently....I told the photographer & MUA Im on my moon.......hahaha.............thats what some of us native american women like to say........they totally understood and I did not do any full nudes just implied and topless........I believe in being upfront....and yes, the bloating and swelling doesnt go over well with me because I am NOT NOT  razor thin.............also Preperation H is great for puffy eyes!

I agree.  I usually try not to shoot during my period, but if I had to I would just be up front with the team I'm working with.

By the way...they make tampons without the string too.  (O.B.)

* Seasonale - have your cycle 4 times a year versus 13 or 14 times a year
* Instead - no string, healthier and lasts for 12 hours

I once had a shoot with a model that had her monthly visitor come visit her in the middle of our shoot.  She was totally embarrassed and of course we ended the shoot.  I felt so bad for her.  But she is a champ and we got some fantastic images from the shoot by the time we stopped.

The ironic twist is that we were shooting nudes againt a...crimson paper background...lol.

Just tuck the string in. Easy as that.

No. Those precious REDWINGS are earned....by performing a specific task while a woman is on her 'moon'.

Here's a little trick I learned in the XXX biz...instead of using a tampon  use an all natural sea sponge...I usually get the huge ones that can be used for painting-they can be cut to whatever size and shape you're comfortable with...I've actually started using them instead of tampons all the time now...the only thing is they can be a little tricky to remove unless you are totally comfortable with your body;)

I'm a doctor and photographer. It doesn't bother me in the least. A natural physiological function of the female body.

I shot one model, who I did not know was on her period, and only later did I see the string in the shots. Photoshop works wonders - no string; great shot; and she didn't try to kill me during the shoot. Win/Win for us all ;o)  Cheers, Tim at Portland Filmworks

I've had a model's period start during a shoot as well as a number of visible strings.  I now keep a couple of tampons in my camera bag "just in case."

In the case of the model whose period started during the shoot, she immediately let me know, and said she would be ready to continue the shoot in a couple of minutes, and she was, after a wardrobe change.

As for the strings, if I see a string, I tell the model and she tucks it in.  It is as simple as that.  In all instances the models have been very professional, have thanked me for letting them know, and the shoots have continued.

In every case I’ve worked with the model again.

there is a way to avoid strings altogether there is product called INSTEAD. I have used it while on my rag at shoots and no mess and no strings. it like 5-6.00 for a box. it is really good for nude photos.

From someone who has been working in the porn industry for years, here's the tip of the day for you gals:  Buy the round cosmetic sponges - you know, the kind you put your foundation makeup on with (along the same lines as the seasponge suggestion but easier to work with) and insert one all the way in there.  If you're really heavy, you can use two of them.  Yes, you do have to be comfortable with your body because you've got to push them up there, and pull them out again with your fingers, but they work great!  Pornstars and nude dancers use them all the time because they can't afford to not work 25% of the time.  AND, the biggest advantage, is that you can have sex with them in, the guy won't feel the thing at all (neither will you), and no blood with come out whatsoever.  This is one of the biggest secrets/tips of the porn industry.  Porn actresses do not stop, um, filming when they have their periods.  I myself use them all the time if I have a hot date and am on my period - the guy never knows!

It's amazing to me how this is such a secret and so few women know this.

A comment - If anyone is planning on trying this, please be aware that most makeup sponges contain latex. While it sounds like a nifty idea, those who are sensitive to latex should be very careful of what the sponges are made of. In my case, I have reactions just using them to apply makeup. *shudder*

Those sponges aren't necessarily sterile.  For those of us not working in the adult industry who therefore have no need to have sex on camera, I suggest sticking with sterile tampons.

This is exactly why I'd suggest the sea sponges...alot of the cosmetic sponges are also starting to put Vit E or aloe in them as well...and they can be a strange shape for some...and the sea sponges can be sterilized, in fact in some cultures(not just the porn world) this is what they use instead of tampons.

i have tucked my string in, I have used sterilized sea sponges (and you can keep these in during sex too, which is why they are popular with the adult film industry and with escorts.) You have to be VERY comfortable with your body to get the seasponges out though. I have also started my period during a shoot before a few times. I like to do athletic poses, I guess all of the twisting...that is the most embarrassing, but every photographer worth his weight carries tampons around, because a lot of models will start their period during a shoot...even if on the pill and it is a day or two early. Now, the worst thing I can think of is having an unexpected period start in a nude location shoot with no spare tampons or kleenex...but that hasn't happened to me yet...and hopefully never will.

Yes, it would be funny, but most adult men who have been in a serious relationship have had to go out for tampons, (Honey, my cramps are really bad, I can't get out of bed, could you go get me some tampons and a large chocolate bar?) I even have a bf. who remembers to pack them when we are going on a trip.

The only time I've had my period show up unexpectedly on a shoot, the single male photographer had tampons. Men who are afraid of buying tampons need to be smacked repeatedly.
