It's funny because female photographers shoot mainly female as well.

Well, you raise an interesting couple of points.  First, most women who shoot models do shoot primarily women.  This is something that has been pondered in the media for a long time.  Even Playgirl is primarily shot by men, not women.

By making your statement, you have raised what is actually the anti-thesis to your very own comment.  If you include male nudes and pornography, far more men shoot men than women who shoot men.  Indeed, again, if you include porn, roughly as many men model in this country as women and there are probably more men shot nude as well.

So where does that leave us?  The question really has to be, why do more photographers on MM shoot women than men?  The answer is, because they shoot becuase they like it, most don't do it for a living.

In my case, I work full-time in the entertainment industry.  I will shoot whoever I am paid to shoot.  It is that simple.  I do mostly women because that is my client base but I have shot males on many occassions (of course, I do not get involved in pornography so that limits, to some extent, the requests for men).  I have worked on a beefcake calendar before as well.  I even did a pretty girl video once where we added in a sexy guy who played the part of an exotic dancer.  Whatever works.

Some of the members of MM enjoy working with males.  I am impressed with their work.  A few female photographers shoot males regularly and a few even shoot nudes.

In the end, for professionals, it comes down to money.  For semi-professionals, it comes down to what they like.  For GWC's, well we all know what it is about for them.

Just my view.  Oh well.

Also note this:  In NY (because I'm NYcentric) MM has 808 models, just 177 of which are male.  Just going by the numbers about 80% of any given photographer's models will be women.

I will shoot anyone, but most of the time it is a comfort thing.  For me I am an admirer of the female form (it's the hetero male in me) but if the project called for it or if I was hired to do so, I'd shoot anyone.

But Brian that is only in the net model world. If you look at commercial print agencies like R&L http://www.r-lmodels.com/ in fact a survey of like 20,000 of their job request found that males were asked for 47% of the time. age 30 to 39 the most often asked for.

I'm new and have shot with only a few male models, all were talented and well worth the effort to shoot. Two come to mind and are on this site, MM 3096 & 18271.

There are a few male models that are a pain in the ass to deal with. I find working with female models easier by 10 fold. In fact one male model asked me to set up a shoot with one of the models I have in my portfolio and has gone as far as contacting that female model to try to set up a shoot with her on his own.
Most female models are more then willing to listen to the photographer’s ideas and wardrobe choices but when you do the same with a male model, the conversation stops after the first or second time you put your ideas on the table.

I think were mostly all adults here and we all know that men and women are needed to sell products around the world.
Would I work with more male models in the future, yes, providing they bring to the shoot as much as a female model and if they don't care for certain ideas, let the photographer know instead of not responding.

I've never looked at models as clients, models are co workers, art directors and photo editors are clients.

An example of product illustration.....in case you weren't sure what I meant.

P.S. in case your wondering that shot like most of my product work was shot on 4" by 5" on film with no Photoshop. Old school...on film..in camera.. done right the first time....

The thing is though when you do this for a living you get right down to it, men or women, it's all just product.

Maybe I’m past my prime when a profile reads like a livejournal page.

I’m not in the habit of releasing prints to anyone without editing them, that’s not what I’d refer to as professional image control.

Mr. Christopher,

She asked a legit question why so few photographers are interested in shooting men. Perhaps she doesn't understand the dynamics of net modeling. Nevertheless she doesn't deserve to be attacked like that. She did nothing to warrant being insulted like that. You need to chill out.!

Well i am a pimp! LoL. maybe this is just fun and games to me. Maybe i am so serious about what i do so i get on line here and chat in mm's forums being i out grown all this other stuff like myspace. "Hey ma" no. I found a couple of photographers who liked that offer. And they are pretty good. So if you don't like it dont read it nor respond to it. I'm not a MODEL..because there are certain requirements to be called a MODEL(tall, thin, and a go getter in that field), but i do enjoy getting my pictures taken other than sears and Walmart ( wink  that's funny) so i'll be shooting with those photographers in novermber two full shoots. $250 a crack. so there goes the $500 i made from my "ho" last night.  LIke a PIMP>...see guys..i TOLD you some will be offended.. sad  awww..

My problem has been finding male models who are not homophobs, oddly enough. I seem to find male models that I think would make great photographs then I talk to them and they tell me they do not pose for males.

I've shot a couple of guys but I just don't find beauty in the male form.  It's not even a homophobic thing.  I just don't like the shape of male bodies.

You just have a lot of good things to say. no shame in that. I get like that too, but i'm just enjoying this thread and others on mm. This site is my first time ever in a forum. I always thought they were boring. I did check out a few others and read through and the people on MM seem so tense. I know these fields are tense and frustrating to those who are making it there primary source of income, but you should try reading these threads a different way before assuming. That's the thing about online, you can't read how the words were meant. I try not to take anything personally because maybe that persons dog just died or wife just left them, so what goes on in MM stays in MM.

Very biased argument... I actually prefer to shoot men since I'm working on the fashion side of photography and I have a much better knowledge of men’s fashion than women’s.
Plus I'd rather deal with an amateur male model than an amateur female model... Their much less prone at becoming upset. ...Plus you can bust their chops.

I did a lot of photos of people around the dance clubs here in Detroit. People kept saying they like what I produce. So when I was fired last year (mostly cause I was bored with corporate life)... I looked at photography. So here I am a starving artist. I treat photography as a form of art, not as a commercial enterprise. Which probably is why I'm a starving artist. But starving is a poor reflection of my life. I know a lot of people, unfraid to meet new, I love the life I have. I've chosen it.

I could use a live-in female model that enjoys the camera (posed and spontaneous), goofey faces, spicey foods (I like to cook for people), and doesn't mind my offering her a massage at any time. Oh - if she's good with finances, business, sex, going to parties, dabbles in the arts, and knows how to coax my skills forward - I would be in heaven.

There ... I've blown my professional cover to appear as a dating ad. Have I slept with a model, no. I think many know I'm sex-starved and I operate through it pretty well. Will this post cause potential female models to hesitate? If so then they never met me and wouldn't know a gentleman.  I'm just a loving & loveable leo.

Photographing a male model kind of sneaked up on me during group photo shoots. I have become comfortable with it due to working with some fabulous models. I have to admit that I still feel better posing females than males. I find every session is part of my evolution and opens new ground for me. The models I've worked with over time are enjoying the progress. I wouldn't be surprised to be doing many more male shoots soon.
