I've read some of the writings on his website and I give him kudos for them.  Its nice to see the inner workings of a photog spilled out.  Plus he's a San Diego guy.....

I was lucky to met him once. He's just a wonderful, awesome and generous person. Even though his pics are so much better and he's so ahead of me, he never even remotely looked down on me... He was interested in what I'm doing and how. I learned a lot in these very few hours.

Plus, I have to say: Man - this guy has charisma... I can see why women get undressed for him wink

Proud to be his friend...how long has it been?  Five years now, I think.

He is one of the top five most intelligent persons I know on this planet.  No bullshit.  Courageous.  Generous with advice.  A mentor, a friend, a life-guide.

Yes, gotta love him.

See, I'm not sure that I can trust Dons that masquerade as Brians.

But a D.Brian?  I could probably trust one of them...

OMG Don has his own thread.  Gotta love it!

Let's see I came across the man on the old FOF forum.   I readily admitted to not being a fashion photographer but I was there for the convo.   The convo was really quite good there then, lots of vigourous discourse, without the mayhem here.  But heated sometimes, and thought provoking.  Who was often stirring the pot or at least getting things going? Two guesses. And who encouraged more voices to express themselves?  Don.

My one and only class in photography was from a guy by the name of Ted Orland.  Turns out he wrote a book called Art and Fear.  Check it out sometime, it's about not being afraid of things you see or want to see but can't because you're afraid.  (And lots more too.)   Ted is a great photographer, and pretty good teacher, and what was super cool about him is that above all he encouraged you to follow your passion.

Stumbling across Don's work and ideas on FOF came for me at a critical point.  I hadn't seriously picked up a camera for years, at least not in an artistic sense.  I had been doing street and documentary work but nothing relating to things I saw in my mind or felt in my heart.  Seeing someone who made no apologies for not fitting into a specific genre, not shooting because it paid the rent, admitting lust in his heart as well as his lens, doing work that was sexy AND intriguing, in some ways, unofficially Don was like my second teacher.

I don't want to make this seem like a eulogy, lol, because obviously it's not.  I'm just saying that if we're lucky, especially in communities of artists and craftsmen, online or in person, we get to meet, share, become inspired by others around us.  Despite all of the failings of the internet, I've actually met or had contact with a number of really engaging thinkers and artists, some of whom are photographers.   I'm glad Don's on Mayhem because I'm sure that even though there will be some (or maybe many) who don't get his work, or who are even threatened by it, there will be others who see his work or read his written salons, become inspired and realize that it's okay to follow paths that intrigue and excite you.

NO!  No Brians at all.  That includes D. Brians, O'Brians, Briannas...ALL OF THEM!  They're all untrustworthy!

A strange thing about Brians is some I write their names as "Brain"  and the rest just as "Brian."  I wonder if this means something.

Is this a suck up thread or what?  Just got home from the dayjob and Tiger mentioned this thread, so of course I've been scouring the fora trying to find it.  Cool!

To a wonderful man who offered me a cot and a wand, who could ask for more? I have the pleasure of talking with him almost every day, and although we've yet to meet, I value his words over many who have been in my life a long time. You are awe-inspiring Don, truly a marvel to listen to. Thank you for existing, not being ashamed of what you do, and for being fabulous at it.

I owe you a truck.

Gotta love him.
