Robyn, Tara and Candice on the cover of Vogue Italia, shot by Steven Meisel

whoop whoop!

I don't know if they also got an editorial, if they did, I'll make sure to post the picture here smile

I'm not entrely sure about robyn's spreaded legs pose, but it kind of works in the shot as a whole. I'm too busy staring at their amazing faces anyway :p

if you can get the issue, go out and buy it, let's show the magazine industry how powerful the plus size consumer is, so that they'll do this more often wink!

What a wonderful, refreshing thread! smile

I'm also what you would call a Plus size model and although I love my curves the industry isn't as bold as me, unfortunately. Photographers often say to me "Well, my personal opinion is that you could gain even 5 more lbs. But my professional opinion is that you have to lose 5 more lbs. I have to sell the pictures, and the industry requires THIN."

I think it's a shame that so called Plus size (when I was a kid women with that size were called normally slim) doesn't get more encouragement from the industry. When I look at the faces of all the beautiful models posted on this thread I see EXPRESSION and joy, a lust for life, something that I often miss in the empty, bony faces of skinny models.

And, working as a choreographer I have to say that "Plus size" girls often have a better feeling for their bodies than the thin ones. They know how to move and how to isolate the single parts of their bodies. They are in touch with themselves and that shows.

Go curves!

in honor of the recent vogue italia plus size hotness cover, here are the pictures from 11 years ago, when plus size model Sophie Dahl got the same honor smile

well, 2 plus size covers in 11 years (that's a total of 130 regular covers and 2 plus size ones!) is not exactly a good average, but I hope they won't wait another 11 years to do this

Dutch awesome model Peeky on the cover and in an editorial for Big is Beautiful (a print magazine in belgium, holland and germany)

quick explanation about the plus size clothing market over here: we're not that fashionable yet. clothes are usually still very baggy and a bit oldfashioned, but we're starting to step it up now. so the styling isn't super exciting (although I LOVE that make up and hair!), but in this case it does work since they're going for this understated, relaxed feel anyway, right?

and even with the very commercial styling, it still feels like fashion to me, which shows the importance teamwork, and how everyone involved can lift an image to another level.

Or point me in the right direction. You have NO IDEA how difficult models in general are to find, let alone awesome plus models. You guys are like shamrocks and unicorns.

I'd be happy to shoot with you

but you know, location location sad

have you tried sending some stuff to one of the plus size agencies and ask if you could test with their plus size models?
I know a photographer who just went to berlin for 4 days, shot a bunch of models and came back.

well you could explain to them that you want to buiild experience in that area! I admit, shooting a plus size model is slightly different than shooting a straightsize model, but it's not like your portfolio doesn't show that you are very skilled at what you do, and that you have an obvious style...

same here... even for paid shoots, a lot of them refuse (what, my money is too fat for ya?). same with publications (which I thought are hard to come byn apparantly not)

more than a problem of finding photographers though is a problem of styling! I'm at that point where I'm ready and eager to start shooting fashion stuff, but finding cool styling is really really hard...

I hate to butt in here, but in the VA Beach area, there are tons of lovely big girls who I am sure would love to have a chance to pose for you.  Perhaps not here on MM, per se... but out and about in the general populace.  Family?  Friends?  It's summer time, so hit up the beach maybe....?  Leave them your card and a link to your online port/this thread and see where it leads smile

I'm sure she has no problem finding lovely big girls who would love a chance to pose for him. but not all of those lovely big girls are suitable as plus size models, and maybe don't have the look he needs to achieve a certain level of pictures he wants to send in to agencies. not trying to be bitchy here, just explaining smile

Is it just me or is it really sad that some of these women with perfectly flat stomachs or even ribs showing are considered plus size? Yes I know there's photoshop involved.  But it's disgusting our culture considers these girls 'fat'.

no, I don't think it's sad. some of them may not be plus size women, but they are plus size models. there is a difference. I agree though that it is sad that people think this is ugly smile

what does frustrate me sometimes is that I feel like a lot of the plus size models are losing weight, to get into the lower end of plus size modelling. they are still gorgeous and very inspiring ofcourse, but the number of plus size models who are slightly bigger (like 14, 16) that do modelling on the same level as the rest is getting lower by the day...

There's one thing that I was thinking about when it comes to plus size models (not trying to start anything)

I've noticed that I don't really see any ethnic plus size models. With straightsized editorial modeling, you'd at least see a few black models and asian models in magazines and on the runways. It's already a bit difficult for ethnic models who are straightsized so maybe being an ethnic model and plus size model (who does editorial modeling) is like a double negative. sad

Toccara Jones was in Vogue's All-Black issue but we all know how it is for models who've been contestants on ANTM

no, I don't think it's sad. some of them may not be plus size women, but they are plus size models. there is a difference.

The pendulum swings back and forth over the years, i have seen it happen 3 or 4 times over the last 10 years. Most of the working plus models that you will see on a daily basis, working for everyone from Macys to Kohls to Forever 21 to lane Bryant and Catherines and kmart and sears, walmart, target, ross, marhalls, etc. (you get the idea) are 12's and 14's (US sizing). (Denise Bidot comes to mind right now, she is working for EVERYONE and is a solid 14)

Most of the plus models you see in editorials are in the size 8-12 range. And while the editorials are no doubt gorgeous, and keep helping to put plus models on the map as viable "fashion" models, the models who are consistently working with the big clients are in fact, a little bit larger.

It used to be more defined by coasts, with the west coast models being a little more commercial and just a tad larger. (mostly 14/16's) and the east cost being a little more editorial and a little smaller (the 8-12's with some tall and small waisted 14's thrown in here and there.) These days the size lines are a bit more blurred. At a recent casting for a large well known client I saw girls from both coasts and a range of probably 12's to 18's. (yes, that's right, 18's!) and it was a direct request casting, meaning the clients asked for these specific models.

I go from a size 10 to a 16. I am very busty and have many lingerie and swimsuit clients in my history. When i am smaller I do not work more and have been padded up anyway. Obviously if i am a size 12 and I am shooting a swimwear line that starts at a 16W, it is not going to fit and you get padded or pinned. When I am larger i do lose a level of fitness and I know my facial shape becomes less commercially appealing. one thing about most plus models, you still see angles to faces and rarely double chins. Losing and gaining 20 lbs repeatedly is definitely not healthy and I do this on a regular basis. and you are right, photoshop fixes lots of flaws that will never be seen anyway. right now I am a 14 and for now I am comfortable there.
