I am to fly out Friday Morning from Fort Lauderdale
A friend asks me to drive down Thursday evening instead because she is moving to South Beach.
She has the apartment all lined up, I just drop her off and she's good

It would cost me an extra nights hotel room but I'm like..sure, no problem

We go down after work and get in at 11:30
She calls the place she is staying...no answer
Like 30 minutes later we are standing in front of the complex and she is blowing the phone up
Finally there is an answer

Guy comes down and leads us up
Perfect place! Perfect location, $350 a month, RIGHT off the strip in South beach
2 bedroom, large, wood floors, clean, nice neighborhood...perfect
So the guy shows us the place, some chick is in one bedroom and he walks us to the master bedroom
He says this is where you will be staying
Room is empty save for a twin bed

She's like....where is my bed?
He's like...you are renting a bed with me
She's like...what do you mean "With you?"
He's like..."With" me

She's like..FUCK THAT!

Out we go

It's now 1am
She LITERALLY has no where to go
I'm flying out to the DR at 10 am

She is FREAKING out

I go find a hotel, book it for 3 nights instead of 1, tell her that if she can't find something while I'm gone I'll call her when I get back in the world and take her back to Tampa

We finally get to bed (Separate beds) at 4 am
I'm back up at 8

That's how the weekend started

It got considerably wilder and with less sleep from there

Considering that the only thing worthwhile in this shitville I'm in(back in Seaford,De)closed down
(A surprisingly good sushi bar, gee, what a surprise in this town, looks like 90% of the population in this area live on McDonalds 3 times a day)..
I just might have to try this

That would be great

I keep getting stuck in the Malecon

Now mind you, I have fun there
But I really would like to see more of the city

For instance, there is apparently a China Town

I need to go see that

I haven't heard anything about this but it seems he doesn't need to promote the event at all by stopping in this lowly thread or tagging profiles.  Good for him!

No Ed has been on top of the pool this year. Of you let it go too far, it is more time and money to get it right. We are hoping to be able to shoot in a few weeks if it ever warms up that is.

Went back to the DR specifically to meet the waitress from the Bodega/Disco (Yokoris) and her Cousin (Marissa a/k/a Perla)

When I went down I brought a pair of shoes and a handbag as a "Regalo" (Gift)

I told the girls I wanted to go dancing and suggested that maybe we could get them a new outfit

So we go to the mall and I tell my girl that she can get any outfit she wants

She looks in the window at a couple of shops but says she wants to go to "Jumbo" which is kind of a DR version of a Super Walmart

We go in and she finds a couple of pair of underwear for $2.00 but no outfit that is good.

She then turns to me and says...

Instead of an outfit, is it OK if I get something else instead?

I'm like...sure...what do you want?
(Thinking to myself...hmmm...crap, this chick is going to hit up the jewelry counter)

She then walks over to the grocery store part of the building and picks up a 1 pound bag of rice and says

"For my family"

I'm like...fuuuuuuuuuuck...

Here this chick has Carte Blanche in this mall, to pretty much get anything she wants, and what she wants is a 1 pound bag of rice so her family can eat.

I say no, I won't buy you a 1 pound bag of rice, but if you get a shopping cart we can start by putting this 30 pound bag of rice in it and fill it with stuff you want from the grocery store instead of an outfit.

We go around shopping and she only puts staples in the cart. No luxury items AT ALL

And only 1 of anything, with the exception of when we got to the can good isle, then she put 2 of each can in the cart. Corn, beans, red beans, pinto beans, tomatoes...she liked the can goods.

She did not want any meat, but I made her get 2 chickens

$100 and it was easily the best money I ever spent

People are always hitting me up for charitable giving. I hate giving money to an organization that is going to piss it away on lobbying or overhead. But if I can give money to someone in need who makes $5.00 a day, in the form of buying them staples that I know for a fact will feed their family for a month? I'll make that gift gladly.

Gives ya a new perspective, don't it  .  .  .  and, yer on the "fancy" side of Hispaniola, when ya make it into the Haiti side, the DR seems like the Garden of Eden by comparison  .  .  .  I think everyone (especially Americans that have never been out of the US), should actually travel, and stay awhile, in some of the poorer countries around the world, just to understand how tough things can be, and appreciate how well we have it overall (obviously there's some tough spots within our borders as well that need addressing)  .  .  .  now, pass some 'o that Barcelo Imperial over here, and lets solve ALL the woild's problems  .  .  .  one drink ata time  .  .  .  wink

Yeah trust me, I think of you a lot down there
Cause if it's like it is in the DR...

Man...Haiti...yeah...no

I did not say it in my OP, but when we got back to her house with the groceries there were no lights on. And I don't mean in her house, I mean in the whole Barrio. 11 pm on a Saturday and the power had been off 2 hours

We had to use the light from cell phones to navigate through the house. It was SERIOUSLY F'n dark in there

About a half hour later...on comes the power like nothing was ever wrong.

Apparently a VERY common occurance

Some people are absolutely clueless with what true poverty is... we are all very   blessed to be born here and not one of those countries.  My sister does mission trips for her church several times a year in Haiti.. the corruption of the government is astounding and the poor are helpless as they get no assistance from the corrupted government... Everything that was sent down to Haiti right after the hurricane was either stolen or confiscated by those who already have... My sister has some beautiful touching shots on her FB of her trips there (her degree is photojournalism) and like they say "a picture is worth a thousand words".

Good for you Carl that you were able to help one family in DR...

Being so close to Haiti I keep hearing more and more stories about the country
I think I'm going to put Haiti in the same category as Sierra Leone and those other countries alone the Coast D'Ivory

I know it's there, but there is no reason that I want to go there

It's just unreasonably dangerous and poverty stricken with no real enticement to visit

I was born in Morocco during the French Moroccan War, my early years were without the luxury of consistent electricity, safe water, and ya hadta use a stick to check yer dresser drawer or shoes for scorpions  .  .  .  but, havin' never been to the US at that point, I had no idea what a Utopia we live in  .  .  .  it was quite the culture shock to just be able to turn a spigot for nice, clean, fluoride treated water, see everyone with cars, clothes, food, and shoes  .  .  .  the idea of a super market was completely foreign to me  .  .  .  luckily, I've become as BIG a consumer of everything we have to offer, as my meager finances will allow (Jake's expensive ta keep happy at a level he's become accustomed to, if he ever divorces me, I'm done for)  .  .  .  but, I've never forgotten what it's like to have less than nothing, so when there's places and people that I can actually help (and not just "feed" those in a position of power, as in Haiti after the quake, as was noted earlier), I try to do my best  .  .  .  as Carl said, when it hits you in the face like that, it can be quite daunting, and the "there but for the grace of God, go I" feelin' can just envelope you  .  .  .  when "we" go to places like Mexico, Bahama, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Brazil, Panama, et al, take a quick minute or two to actually see the people and how they live, and not jest ride blindly from the airport, to the pristine resort  .  .  .  might give ya different mindset as to the overall importance of "things"  .  .  .  OKAY, Okay, okay, ok, that's my public service message for the year, now hand over that bottle of Rhum du Barbancourt and let's enjoy the beautiful day, and place that we're in  .  .  .  at least as long as da rhum holds out  .  .  .  wink
