http://ello.co/ NEW! EXCLUSIVE! INVITE ONLY! SOCIAL! YOU CAN POST GIFS! What do all need in our lives? Another social network, of course! But this one is slick and minimalist and cool and ad-free*. I dunno, it's a thing. And you can post gifs. I have a few invites I can hand out for anyone interested. You have to give me your email and we'll be BFF. *for the time being until they go broke or someone buys them out

It would seem to me that if a new social media network wanted to get established and grow, "invite only" isn't the best way to go. Why make your thing difficult to join and get into. Facebook Instagram Twitter Tumblr Linkedin Google+ And now Ello? Best of luck.

They aren't trying to replace Facebook, but a lot of people are fleeing Facebook for ello.

Scarcity/exclusivity breeds interest. People want something that they can't have. That's exactly how facebook got going. At first it was only available to students in certain schools.. lots of buzz developed.. more people were granted access.. etc. There rest is history. Gmail did the same thing.. invite only.. exclusive club.. I wanna join! That said.. I don't see what their business model is if they don't have ads and don't mine/sell data. They say they will sell certain "premium" features and the rest will remain free. Not sure I think that will work. But in the age of "freemium" games maybe it just will.

Honestly, I'm at the point where I'm interested in hearing one's monetization strategy before joining sites. They say no ads and no data mining. If I'm not paying, someone is, and that someone is not going to bankroll it forever.

I don't think I agree with Mister Disco's definition of advertising. Branded content is marketing, sure, but it's not necessarily advertising. Ello doesn't claim to be marketing-free.

I also have invites if anyone is interested. Aside from the advertising/data mining/privacy differences, I'm interested in Ello from a modeling perspective since I can use my alias, and I'll be able to post more images from my portfolio without getting flagged by Facebook's morality police. I also like the design of it, from an aesthetic perspective - I'm a fan of minimalism (and it reminds me of the way my old blog looked 10-15 years ago, lol).

I'm still looking for an invite. By the way, if you read the terms.. It says that in the future there will be features you need to pay to access. That's their way of monetizing instead of ads, and I assume what was pitched to their investors.. which was quite a bit of capital. Seems like it has a hip vibe and will probably be successful if they aquire ello.com

I really like it. But I really wish that had some privacy options. Can't wait to see FB go the way of MySpace.

The most minimal of HTML knowledge allowed vast creative power, myspace was so malleable you could use it as a platform for all kinds of stuff. I kind of hate E-social networking in general, it's made the world seem more....dystopian.
