Harvard Business Review: Ello Is a Wake-Up Call for Social Media Marketing

Excerpt:
"To understand upstart social network Ello, which burst into the spotlight this week — growing from just 90 members in August to a reported 30,000 new users per hour — let’s start with its manifesto:

Your social network is owned by advertisers.

Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.

We believe there is a better way…We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate—but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.

Even if you’re cheering for this phenomenon as a social media user, the view from inside any business that relies on social media advertising may be less enthusiastic.

Businesses need to take Ello and its manifesto as a wake-up call to rethink the way they use social networks to reach customers. The intense interest and discussion engendered by this manifesto attests to the profound misgivings many of those customers now have about the networks that occupy a growing place our work, our relationships and our lives.

Those misgivings are evident in the sign-ups for networks like Ello and Diaspora; in the emergence of anonymous, private and non-persistent platforms like Secret and WhatsApp; and in the growing number of Internet users who report taking steps to obscure their digital footprint."

The thing I don't like about ello so far (and I'm not sure this is likely to change) is that it's more like twitter than facebook.  People follow you and you follow them but they call it "friends".  I much prefer facebook's (and other's) method of friend request then approval.  I'm not really interested in talking to/interacting with the world.. I'm more interested in talking and interacting with my friends.

I've stuck with facebook rather than twitter for that very reason -- I prefer the (supposed) privacy and connectivity with individuals rather than just being a broadcaster to the world.

It remains to be seen if ello is interested in being like that.. it's early days still but I'm certainly willing to explore and see what comes.

I'm not a cool kid.
My pants legs are too high like for a flood.
I made milk come out my nose when I laughed really hard.
I brought twinkies for lunch and somebody smashed them.  I still ate the twinkie. smile
I'm the last kid to get picked for wiffle ball.

Facebook Apologizes To LGBT Community, Promises Changes To "Real Names" Policy

In a Facebook post, the company’s chief product officer apologized to “the affected community of drag queens, drag kings, transgender, and extensive community of our friends, neighbors, and members of the LGBT community.”

I heard via Google-supplied anecdotes that nudes are OK but porn is not.

Does anybody know how long it takes until you get a new set of invitations.

I exhausted mine a few days ago and they didn't refresh... don't think that 5 is all you can invite... wink

I am judging how cool ello is by how quickly they invite me of their own accord.

So far they are not cool. And falling.

At this rate they may become too uncool for me to join at all.

Is there some sort of bell curve, or does it start at maximum cool and lose coolness from there?

In the spirit of Groucho: I wouldn't want to be a part of a social network that would have me as a member.  tongue

I do wonder how they are going to make money, tho. No ads, no selling gathered info, no membership dues. Servers and bandwidth gotta be paid for one way or the other.

Earlier this year, I cancelled my G+ account, and whittled down my FB "friend" list from several thousand to a small (250-ish) collection of long-time IRL friends, former cow orkers, and immediate family. I'm heading in the entirely-opposite direction: the *very last* thing I need is MORE social media in my life, and I don't give a rat's ass if they're promising free pizza and beer delivered to my door every day as an incentive to join (let alone highly-suspect promises of ad-free-and-privacy-respecting networking)... no thanks. I'm good. If Ello turns out to be popular enough to overtake FB, I might switch to them and dump FB. But I doubt that'll happen anytime soon, if ever. hmm

I don't have anymore invites to offer, unfortunately.

One positive for ello is you can post full-res pictures. A lot of photographers have seemed to taken to it.

It would seem to me that if a new social media network wanted to get established and grow, "invite only" isn't the best way to go.  Why make your thing difficult to join and get into.

I think that's EXACTLY their point, to make it difficult, & thus to create a sense of exclusivity to it.
