The first serious camera I used was a Miranda Model F. It was an all manual SLR, called "the poor man's Nikon, which I used for a six week photography class at Bridgewater State College (Massachusetts) when I was 14 years old. After that I set up a B&W darkroom at home, in an old meat locker in the back of my father's store. I've been hooked ever since.

My first camera was a Herco Imperial 620. Then I went high-tech and got a Kodak Instamatic that used 110 film. It was the high-end model that had the integrated flash. smile

At age 11, one of my uncles gave me a Leica IIIg that he won in a poker game while stationed in Germany.  Being a manually operated camera, he had no idea what all those dials and numbers meant, so he gave it to me!  I went down to the local library and started reading every issue they had of U.S. Camera, Modern Photography and Popular Photography. As I was the only person interested in photography, the librarian let me have all the back issues I could carry out of the storage room! The first camera I ever purchased new was a Minolta SRT 101.

I'm seriously not joking..THIS was my first camera..  I was a kid, obviously, but my mom and dad both loved photography and encouraged me to play around with it.

Oh gawd!!! This thread is making me cry... all that nostalgia, the memories, those bygone years of film!

I always drooled over the Minolta 7000 and after a lot of pleading, my dad got me a point-n-shoot... I was in shock! It was some unknown brand "PAIM" but had 2 lenses in a disc - wide & tele and so that was it... my 1st ever camera tongue

Later I got my hands on the Ricoh KR-5 Super w/50mm lens... my first ever affair with a camera. Used that to take memorable photos when I first came here to the US.. I was 10 :-P lol

1st Camera (P&S)
PAIM

2nd Camera (SLR)
Ricoh KR-5 Super

3rd Camera (SLR)

4th Camera (SLR)
Nikon F3

.... Made memorable images with the Ricoh; Learnt Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO with the Canon; Took masterpiece shots on the Nikon... big_smile Don't have the Ricoh anymore. Canon is just laying on the shelf. Nikon is used sometimes...

My first camera was I believe this 1930s era classic, originally purchased by my grandfather, who passed away before I was born.  My mother obtained it from my grandmother and gave it to me as a Christmas present in the mid 1970s.

Ricoh. lens 70-200  I think, and it was a Tamrom. Was in Italy '97 and the photos I took, some were collected. I was 38yrs old and the first time I shot; and it was the first clue that I had natural ability. I was so thrilled to discover this that I did not buy the gear to go professional. It's a decision I mildly rue.

Thank you to Mr. Fletcher in Oklahoma for starting this thread. Memories.

In the early 1960’s I used a nondescript camera whose name and
film format I forget. I used it in 1962 on a field trip in sixth
grade to the local newspaper plant. In the late 1960’s I used a Polaroid
camera photographing local bands (and friends). I got paid for the band
photographs (cost of the film only).

In college in 1970 I traded for a camera with six golf balls. It used
126 film cartridges. I took it to the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival finding
I was unable to sufficiently photograph Jimi Hendrix at night. In 1971
I borrowed a Kodak Retina II camera when attending a Jethro Tull
concert in Florida on their Aqualung tour. Again, I found the low
light (and my inexperience) insufficient for notable results.

In 1972 I became serious about becoming a professional. I purchased
an Omega D3V enlarger and a Minolta SRT-101 camera. Soon a Minolta
102. Then a year later a Hasselblad 501CM. Later a Cambo 4x5.

A career came about after a succession of cheap cameras. All with film.
And today as an art photographer I still use only film cameras. Darkroom
printing and film. Not for everybody but definitely for me.

An Argus C3 and I had no idea how to focus it. Then an Argus twin lens.  My first real camera was a Nikon F.
