Lighting Setup Tutorials: basic to advanced
Mark, I know I already asked you in a PM, but any chance we can get you to discuss one of your location setups? Thanks. Tom Jul 23 07 05:53 pm Link (I posted these pics in another thread and then realized they should be shared here as well...) Behind-the-scenes of the Paper Chase shoot. Pics by my first asst Drew. Second assts Betsy and Jeremy. Model Tayln. The setup. There was lots of throwing and picking up paper that day for my assistants. Getting the "Whirlwind" shot. Demonstrating the pose to the model. There's a reason I'm behind the camera. Getting the "Matrix" shot. Getting the "Grab" shot. Tom, stop looking at the LCD. Here are some of the final pics. The whirlwind shot. The matrix shot. The grab shot. Jul 26 07 09:24 pm Link So, I get my model over the other night and I start to set up my lights only to discover I'd left the power cord to my power pack SOMEwhere between my last shoot and now. Ugh. No Novatrons. So I improvised with my SB-600 setting off a couple of AC Slaves and 42in Westcott reflector. Aug 08 07 12:16 am Link :::::::::::BUMP:::::::::::::: I am a novice when it comes to lighting... I absolutely adore this thread! I know this is probably asking too much, but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask... lol Can someone post a set up using the equipment I have? I don't have much, and I'm feeling really limited, but I *KNOW* one of y'all can probably do some amazing stuff with the bare minimum.. I've got 3 strobes with black/foil umbrellas, a Lowell tugnsten light with a white umbrella. I've also got black, white and blue seamless papers. That's pretty much it! :-( This was taken with a strobe to the models right, a strobe hitting the paper and the tungsten light on a boom above the models head. LETS KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE! So you don't need to apologize for your equipment. Just be creative with your modifiers--put a handkerchief over the reflector, bounce a light off a piece of white foamcore. Fire a light through a sheet. This image was shot with a main strobe shot through a piece of fabric taped to the reflector, the hairlight (+1 stop) had a small grid to focus the light (but you could use a homemade snoot just as easily) and then a fill light (-2 stops) with a umbrella. Aug 16 07 12:03 am Link Thanks for the reply! I'm definitely going to start experimenting more with the equipment I have! ::::::BUMPS::::::: Aug 25 07 03:03 am Link I'll throw one in as well. It would be very helpful for everyone if you would discuss your lighting rations and final exposure. Thanks! Tom Aug 31 07 10:02 pm Link Hi all, i did this shot with one light, a photographic style tungsten i borrowed from a friend, somewhere between flash and tungsten he said. I think it works well and was so simple, just shone the light at 60 degree angle and walked arounfd the other side and took the shot. Yes it is a mannequin, but it will work the same on a model, and I feel the KISS principle can work just as well as complicing things sometimes You can get a better idea if you click it and see a little larger Sep 01 07 09:33 am Link wow, ok about 30 mins a great reading here inthis thread, learning from soe of you is amazing, lets keep this thread going, its probley the most useful thing i read in a long time. thanks for all the advice people. keep up the good work. -R Sep 01 07 10:01 am Link Mickle Design Werks wrote: Mickle Dam, thats some beautiful work with just a 550ex flash. I'm glad you posted it, shows you don't need a whole bunch of lights to get an amazing photo, just how to use 1 correctly is more then enough! Sep 01 07 10:10 am Link Behind-the-scenes lighting setup... If I remember correctly, large umbrella was f11 and lights with zoom reflectors were f16. Later, I put a fourth light in the backseat, set to about f8-11 to give more depth/fill to interior. Sep 03 07 09:24 pm Link Behind-the-scenes... Umbrella reflector at about f8 and zoom reflectors at about f11. Sep 03 07 09:26 pm Link Behind-the-scenes... Umbrella and zoom reflector on main dock were set to about f16. Beaty dish with grid on far dock (foreground in pic) was set to full power (600 watts) and not metered. I was just hoping this light would help to separate models from water/background which it did by providing minimal rim lighting (not noticeable). On the second image when I was behind the diving board, the beauty dish provided the nice specular highlights on the water giving a moonlight type effect as if they were swimming at night. Sep 03 07 09:32 pm Link Kickers are approximately one stop over fill light. Sep 03 07 09:36 pm Link Ambient was f16. Kickers set to approximately f22. Fill at approximately f11. Sun from behind and to the left of the models. I ran out of time and set this one up quickly and was not completely satisfied with the results. I didn't have time to proof the lighting on my laptop and it suffered a bit. I would have removed the left kicker and just used the sun. I also would have upped the fill by moving the umbrella reflector closer to the subjects. I do like the overall illustrated effect I got with the lighting and hope to get another chance to do this one right in the future. Working with horses is also very difficult (this was on a breeding farm and they were high-strung; not calm ranch horses). Getting the horses and models in the right place at the same time was a crap shoot. Sep 03 07 09:44 pm Link Nice diagrams. here is an easy set-up that I liked. https://img8.modelmayhem.com/070614/00/ … e7a875.jpg Sep 03 07 10:34 pm Link *bump* Sep 06 07 09:42 am Link high ceilings dammit high ceiling. love it wish I had the space mrbeagle wrote: Sep 08 07 12:01 pm Link LOVE THIS THREAD!
