What is the worst excuse someone has ever given for cancelling a shoot?

I got this message while I was already at the studio

"Im sorry  but  I cant do today, I know I wont feel comfortable and I've had a shit couple of days, I came off my bike yesterday and f****d all my arm and leg and ive been to an atm and I have no money to get up there. Sorry for wasting your time and I will pay for your time ( despite my earlier  comment I will have money soon)"

So what strange excuse have you heard? From Photographers and from models?

Most original: I hurt my back releasing trapped raccoons.

Second-most: I have to clean out my Ebay storage space.

Most maddening: I have to go shopping with my mother.

I'm glad the raccoons are okay.

Blamed me because she didn't answer texts or phone calls about confirming the shoot.

I recently had a model end a paid shoot early because she "didn't eat", but what we managed to shoot surpassed many shoots that yielded 2 to 3 times more images.

The photographer said that?

Was his studio in her basement?

The worst I've gotten was probably either "We decided not to" an hour before the shoot, or "I got lost" from someone who made it 95 out of 100 miles to my place, and wouldn't answer the phone when I called to give the directions the rest of the way, which required ONE turn, at the end of the road she was already on.

I would prefer hearing nothing than an insulting excuse.

Had a shoot scheduled for 6 pm, got an email from the model at 5 saying she's been helping her pregnant friend give birth since 7 am that morning. Nowhere in her profile did it mention her full time job was a midwife or obstetrician.

Had a fight with my girlfriend

My camera got stolen

My camera got stolen (he used that one again 2 years down the track- must be the photographers equivalent to the grandma dying)

Got a new camera and don't know how to use it yet

I have learned that the more a model "owes" you in some way, the less likely you are to hear from them again unless they are a dedicated pro in which case you can count on things being made right.

"i'm going to have to re schedule with you, im so sorry but my house burnt down tonight. All my clothes and everything are ruined."

She wanted to schedule another time after 7-days.
This was her style of politeness. The amusement value out-weighted any offend I felt.

The day before the shoot...

"My wife who is an event caterer has a last-minute job and since she is my escort I can't come as I've had bad experiences in the past...sorry...."

Probably just as well, considering I was never informed that she was bringing an escort to begin with: imagine how much fun that would have been when I told her 'wife' to go find a coffee-shop in town... big_smile

Oh and last year after I asked on another's profile where the F*** she'd got to:

"Sorry but I decided to spontaneously go to France..."

WT actual F...?

After a model flaked and didn't even call, I called her the next day and she said, "I'm so sorry, I had an emergency and had to take my dog to the vet to get fixed".

Sometime later, she turned out to be one of the best models I've ever worked with.

Well, I know that my BEST excuse ever was:

"Sorry, I got drunk last night and have a hangover."

While it's ---- not exactly cool I'd much rather hear that because it was honorable than find out that I'd killed yet another unsuspecting grandmother.

I wonder how many times a photographer thinks the model made some weird excuse when it was actually true... There are plenty of stories of models who have a problem or situation that prevents them from going to a shoot, have the balls to inform the photographer and get called names for it and put on some sot of blacklist.
not cool.

When I am talking to a new client (not photography), I explain the process.  When I am on the job, the neighbors ask, I explain the process. People going by stop and ask, I explain the process.   You would think that they would just say, "Hey, I bet this is on line somewhere and I can just look it up rather than bother him and his crew!"  I know that I have had the conversation thousands of times and I know that the person I am talking to has never had the conversation.  So I will have it again.  So what.

Worst excuse experience was three models in a row had a disaster.  Aunt in a car wreck; Gallbladder operation; Sister in a car wreck.  It is just asking for trouble to schedule with me.

A gatekeeper just called and flaked on me 15 minutes before the shoot. She said she hurt her leg 2 days ago, and although she was in the car and on her way, needed to cancel because her leg looked swollen.

Best excuse I ever got:  "My brother was shot and killed last night."

We had a great shoot when we finally rescheduled.
