Have you ever used strobes or other lights outdoors?  If so, what do you use and can you post some sample images of what you have captured?  Diagram setups would be appreciated too.  Thanks!

I've used TTL fill flash outdoors (example: https://img9.modelmayhem.com/070725/08/46a74ac6c6fec_m.jpg)

Never used any off-camera lighting outdoors though, as I don't have any that I could just carry with me like that (I only get to use off-camera stuff during my camera club's studio nights)

i have a quantum q flash and several strobs that can be hooked up to battery packs but i have never taken them on location.  i was thiking about doing so but wanted to get some ideas before hand.

i also have several sb800's that can be set off on remote as well.

I did this one with a canon flash on manual off camera. I am looking to shoot more with strobes outside though. I like when its done and balanced well. You can do some really creative stuff with  the lighting since its more controlled.

thanks,

that was 3 lights...

sun at the models back, my vivitar 3700 pointed down from the right, and my 550 pointed at the other side toward the model. I also blurred the blue channel to give it that old look.

was your 550 set at about 1 stop less then the sun and the 3700 set at a 1/2 stop less?

Hotshoe mounted strobe bounced off a pop-open disk reflector to the model's left. Ambient scene lighting for background and fill.

did you find it cumberson tracking it to this location?  best to use an assistant and/or sand bags to help ensure that the strob is not blown down by the wind?  were you using a softbox too?

i love the combination of the ambient lighting from the backgroudn and the flash.  did you shoot this on a tripod and drag the shutter as well?

Strobe fill again bounced off a reflector to the model's right this time. Key/main light source is difuse sunlight.

It's not too bad, I did have an assistant.  The stand, battery pack, stobe and a white umbrella that I shoot thru weighs about 7-8 pounds.  I shoot with the strobe about 10 feet away 1/2 stop hotter than the metered background.  I hope this helps.  The unit cost about 450 btw

Actually no; I usually prefer using a tripod, but the person "organizing" the shoot sort of "forgot" to get permits....so I was shooting handheld at about 1/60th at 1600ISO and I think F3.5 on a F2.8 max lens. I have a 1DsMII which handles shooting at 1600ISO quite well as long as you aren't printing over 8x10 inches or so, otherwise it would really be pushing it.

Sunlight was naturally difuse/indirect at the location which is in an alleyway where there is a roof directly above the model, so it is only open to the sky off to the model's left, so I got some good directionality even though it was difuse due to the cloud cover; "open shade" if you will.

EDIT: The ambient light was also bouncing off the reflector a bit and back in to provide some fill, but not enought without getting the reflector in the frame, that's why the strobe was added to make the ratio of the light less wide-spread.

Top 2 of this layout are also sun main with strobe fill. Strobe pointed at 90 degrees away from the subject with a tiny whitecard attached to the strobe bouncing it at the subject.

I'm not happy about the hot-spot on the sign, but again, this was from the same promo shoot as the other one at the Trump Casino and we had to shoot quickly and I could only use a camera-mounted strobe unit and this time had nobody to hold the reflector.

Same shoot as the B&W; this one was in a bus tunnel (yes active, we had to listen for them coming) in the late afternoon with the sun coming directly down the opening. Strobe provides fill; I believe indirect, pointed at the ceiling of the tunnel.
