I’ve seen photographers using white cards/panels as reflectors.
Today I’ve seen somebody shooting with paper as background and having two black panels on right and left.
The walls of the studio were of neutral gray color.
The photographer was busy and I couldn’t ask him

Could somebody explain what may be the purpose of having two black panels on right and left.

Create shadows, they basically can eat light, also they may be used to flag light from hitting the subject or from hitting the lens of the camera from a source of light, also can be used to stop a reflection from occurring in glasses of say a far wall, even in silver jewelry if it needs contour or if you are seeing a reflection of the room or light that is unwanted.  I have also used a glossy black to cast a shadow to create a contour on a face.

I use black cards to absorb light and create contrast.  White cards will create additive light onto the subject, and black cards will be subtractive light.

Example:

There is a white fill card Camera Right, and a Black card camera left...

I did a shoot last night where we wanted the talent lt but the background all shadow. We didn't have panels so we moved the light source so a wall blocked the light from hitting the backdrop but still hit the talent. it looks like a light subject in a dark room

I did that exact same thing with this shot.

Foam Core is the shit! I have a local art supply place that sells huge boards for around five bucks a piece. Great for flagging and a few other creative things.

You can get black or white boards from places like Staples.  They aren't full length, but do nicely for headshots and upper body shots. I get 40 inch boards in a 3 pack for less than $20.

This was created with 4 x 8 sheets of black foamcore on either side of the model .... creates those nice dark edges.
