Could you show us some photos? I really want to get a reference because I never used before a ring flash and now I have one, it's a homemade ring flash. Are you comfortable using it?? Do you hate it or love it? Thank you for your feedback.

See the Ring Flash section of the Lighting, Flash, Ring, & Battery Strobe Reference thread. There's a few dozen threads on ringlights, including some dedicated to showing results. Some examples:

* Ringflashes? Here's what I want to know!
(Stephen Eastwood's consolidated ringflash thread)

* A Ring-ing Endorsement Review of AB Ringlight by our own John Fisher
* Alien Bee's RingFlash (With overpowering sun examples)
* Finally tried my AB ringflash.
* Has any one used a ring flash for fashion shots?
* Ring Flash - Love them? Hate them? Have one?
* Ring Flash For Glamour Photography
* Ring Flash Examples? Sigma/Sunpak
* How YOU use your ring flash
* Post your best ringflash shot!
* I hate ringflashes. (MANY Examples)

* Anyone use a ring flash for shooting models?

Thanks. Ringlight as a key light has a very unique look. But you can also use it as fill with mixed studio lighting or daylight.... sky's the limit. Good luck. Msg me if you have any questions.

This one was taken with the Alien Bees ring flash.

it's a beautiful picture, so expressive. Question: Is it different if you use another canvas color or background? Always you will have the same light effect with a ring flash??

Edit:  Note about your DIY device - you are seriously restricted to lens choice, distance, overall output, and I am sure whenever the electric can opener runs your flash fails.  I suggest not taking this near any appliance stores, could result in a total equipment malfunction - maybe even meltdown.

Just curious; what did your wife say when she realized her best mixing bowl was gone?  wink
.......................................

Great for location.  18+  For this shot the ring flash is connected to my Porty - 1200ws, we had only minutes to knock out the set.  Cars were coming up the hiway and around the bend.

https://img6.modelmayhem.com/070331/15/ … a1139f.jpg

The below image was shot in studio... I went in and fixed the ring-catchlights in her eyes.  You can avoid red-eye by having a continuous light source aimed at the model, a 1k hot light is good, that keeps her eyes from dilating between flashes.  The continuous light is less output than the strobe/ring-flash and is eliminated by the flash.  smile
