So...after being turned down twice in a row for doing something wildly controversial, I was wondering...are there ANY photographer with the balls to shoot a girl with dreadlocks? Apparently from the reactions I have gotten so far, it seems my unique hairstyle may break the lens. Whatever happened to originality? I guess it only applies when you are "as original as everyone else".

I hope so. Its just frustrating how closed minded some people can be. I understand how aesthetics can be important to some, but then what is art? I just wanted to be original, and it seems like dreadlocks are more or less taboo. Blood, crazy contacts, nudity and funky makeup arent, but oh my! dreadlocks? Im inssaaannee!

I just uploaded an older photograph in my portfolio that I took of this lady with dreadlocks. I love the texture and I wish I have more chances to capture more dreadlocks under different lighting.

I didn't quite get the handle on posting the image in this reply.

"unique hairstyle"? guess that depends where you are; enough dreads, including having had them myself, around certain parts ...

how long have you had your dreads? i mean, are you still in that early, still locking up stage? 'meantime, maybe you can at least post a current snap of yourself so that photographers have a better idea with whom they'd be trying to shoot?

gotta love www.knottyboy.com ! yah mahn!

well...I send the asking photographers a current photo of myself. Its not professional enough to make it to the port here, but I do make it a point to tell them what they will be encountering during the shoot. No sur[rises. As for my dreads, they are not new. They are about 5 months old, using DreadH***Hq (I know, i cant advertise here,) products to acclerate the maturing process. As of now, they look identical to dreadfalls.

nothing quite like getting interested in a port ... only to find it's not current; why not put a note in the bio about the dreads? if not also simply stick a polaroid or snap in the port until you get something more professional done? that last minute surprise may be working against you. dunno.

g'luck!

I get the same myself. photographers say that want something unique, but when they get it they don't know what to do with it.

maybe they had types of hairstyles planned for outfits or the style of the shoot that dreads just simply won't work for.

Had you lived just a little bit closer you would have gotten a request already. Europe is unfortunately just a little bit more than 3 hours driving away.
I like your style a lot!!

The kind of photographers that approached me were a bit more avant-garde though. Not fashion. But well, its disheartening to find that my chances were ruined over a hairstyle. So much for experimentalism.

don't let that affect your thinking though! just two wks after i'd shaved mine off i knew i'd made a HUGE mistake. sigh.

anyway, the dreads might redefine a whole new style for you? yay for experimenting!

You need to contact Wynd Mulysa (MM 116458).  She is from the SF Bay area, but currently traveling.  I'm sure she could give you some insight as what to expect by wearing dreadlocks.  Keep your dream alive...

Well, they are pretty original in Fresno. I dont live in a "cool" and hip place like Los Angeles. I guess that was a mistake in my part, hehe.
