Usually you wont continue to get baby ass smooth unless you let a substantial amount of stubble grow in first.

At least that has been the case for myself.

Otherwise it just looks bald..but there are hard to shave hairs here and there that sneak up on ya.

Let them grow it for a few days first before they re-shave. And they should shave the day of the shoot. Not a few days before.

OK, need some help and some experienced model input.  What is THE best way to get the closest, smoothest pubic area?   Wax/shave, whatever.  I'd like to hear from models that have thicker hair, as it seems that models with finer hair have less of a problem presenting a 'cleaner cut'.

I've had to photoshop out stubble, clean body makeup off of bikinis provided, on and on.   How do I best put it to models and maybe offer advise to less experienced models and make it known that I desire a clean, smooth area in the pubic area so as not to draw unwanted attention to the area for the wrong reasons, and not have to photoshop (extensively) that area.

I'm sure photogs that shoot any type of nudes may have the same issues......maybe even some models that are looking for some tips??

[/quoti   I have always shaved daily to stay baby smooth, but I am a really light blonde and have really fine hair so it may have something to do with it.But it has always worked best for me,and also my husband,if he waits a few days before he shaves he will start getting those ingrown hairs and red bumps,I think the stubble is very irritating to the skin.

Ok, I've got a question. Just how much does a brazilian (I'm talking everything off here) hurts? I've been wondering for a while. Those Weaked Weasels bikinis sure are cool. I'll ask my boyfriend to get me one for my birthday. A shame they're not very useful here in Montreal.

I never got waxed, so I don't know how it is. But I work part-time at a hospital, so I can get something for the pain if needed. I just need to know the strenght wink

I get Brazilians about every three weeks, when I can talk one of my co-workers at the spa into doing it for me and the hair is long enough.  Yes, it hurts, but the pain goes away quite quickly, and if you remember to take a Motrin or two 20 minutes before the waxing, and your esthetician is compassionate enough to IMMEDIATELY put pressure on whatever area she just waxed (well, at least on the mons), it's not bad at all.  Plus the hair gets finer and finer every time you get it done.

The only problem is, it can be hard to find somebody who does it well, or in some places who does it at all.  This is when living in the South rather sucks. tongue

Waxing.  Not done at home, but done by a professional.  At-home kits are murder.  I would recommend having it done the day before the shoot, so that any redness or irritation will go away by the time you shoot.

Waxing pulls out the root of the hair, so it takes a few days for that to grow back, where as shaving only clips the hair off at skin-level, so the instant the hair starts growing back it's visible.

You know, I can't believe that the ladies, and I guess sometimes the men, let people do this to them.  My girl has gotten a brazilian wax before and I told her I couldn't believe she let someone do that to her, talk about up close and personal.

Me in her position:

"Bob we're going to do something a little different tonight than talkin' about cars, playin' pool,  and drinkin' beer"

10 minutes later:

"Hey Bob you missed some hairs down there, now hand me a Coors while you do that will you, by the way, how's the mrs's"

As for shaving, I havent perfected it! It always hurts when I shave and i am wondering whats going on? Also I get very bumpy and very dry after I shave! I HATE IT!

I wish we just werent born with hair down there! God my life would be so much easier!

You have to use talcum powder to dry out the skin and keep the stuble from sticking down in the pores and to stop the micro foil from sticking to  and rolling the skin.

I say give the model a break about the body makeup.  I use it all the time on my legs to cover up bruises/cuts to try to save the photog time with retouching.  At least the model's trying to do everything to give you a better shot.  It comes off in the wash anyway!

Hmmm, I didn't know that models must shave or wax before a photo shoot. I haven't been checking them. Should I start?

Wait! What kind of shoots are we talking about?

LASER HAIR REMOVAL!!!

Laser Hair removal is absolutely amazing.  After a few treatments, you can’t see any dark spots.  It seems to be the new trend for both genders.  My understanding is people with darker (courser) hair have a better outcome and fewer treatments.  It’s not cheep, but well worth it in my opinion….

Shave. Use a good shave gel. After you're done, put deodorant over the entire area.

Don't ask. It just works. I don't know HOW. But it does.

Shave.  Shave regularly, and the skin will toughen up and you'll be able to shave every day without rashes, bumps, etc.  If your hair is very dark and you appear to have a shaving shadow, don't worry.  Most photographers should be able to remove the obvious areas in photoshop.

I have to agree with RED...I shave EVERYDAY..I don't get rashes, bumps or any of that stuff.  To get it really CLOSE, I don't shave for a couple of days and then sheave the day I want it to be really close.  I'm not sure why it helps, but it does. I think its because the razor has more to grab onto.  I use a venus vibrance razor  adn i rarely use shaving cream.  And the day you need it to be extra close and smoot use a new razor head.  This always works for me.

All you need to do if you don't wanna do waxing is , when you shave, just shave in the direction of the hair growth and it should be pretty smooth....at least it works on me.

Isn't there any sort of lotion on the market that desensitizes the skin so that a wax job doesn't hurt so much? Has anyone asked a doctor if there is a prescription medication that will do that? What about Maintain, the over-the-counter creme that is supposed to desensitize the penis for men that have premature ejaculation problems? Would that help? Maybe some enterprising young man could do his Master's or Doctoral research on this topic. Or both. He could get his volunteers right from the MM forum! Ah, the price that must be paid to advance science and reduce human suffering!

Waxing seems just so painful! I know sooner or later, I'll have to get it done, but it scares me like heck.

I wouldn't trust shaving it off in my case. My natural hair colour is dark brown and my skin is very light, so you'll se the hair starting to grow back about 2-3 days later and even when it's just done, you can still see the hair under the skin. That's a problem I have with my legs, but it's subtle enough only I notice it. And it angers me. But then, I'm scared of waxing and I don't have the money for laser.

Yeah waxing is painful, but it didnt hurt as bad as I thought it would be. The results of it were a lot better than shaving for me. I hear that laser removal feels like they're setting you on fire in the bikini area.

On a serious note, here is what I have learned over the years from models and women's' Mags..... Feedback from models I have recommended this to tell me it works............

Laser will permanently eliminate any hair killing the hair follicles, expensive and permanent.

Waxing, efficient slower regrowth than shaving, trade offs expense and for some embarrassment....

Best bet is still shaving, done right you can be silky smooth with little or no expense, it does require regular maintenance to maintain without shave bumps.

Here are my shaving tips:

Shave regularly, how often varies from person to person. Best way to tell is the touch test, run your fingers across the area, if it feels like sand paper it's time to shave. For most women this can be anywhere from a couple of days to a week or two.

Use just a single edge razor, multiple blade razors pull the hair up and cut them below the skin level leaving a greater chance for ingrown hairs and shave bumps and irritation. My razor recommendation is the Men's Bic Disposable.

Shave just before getting out of the shower, use a basic soap like Pure and Natural or Ivory to clean and lubricate the area, once lathered up shave in the direction of the grain of the hair (if the hair points downward stroke the razor downward) slow smooth strokes are the key, don't keep making multiple short strokes over the same area. When done get out of the shower and dry off. Applying an OTC Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch creme or ointment after shaving also helps minimize and eliminate shave bumps and ingrown hairs.

Why this works:

Shave bumps and ingrown hairs occur for several reasons, Bacteria trapped in the hair follicle, hair trapped within the hair follicle, irritation etc.....

Shaving at the end of your shower you will be as clean as you can be and your skin will be most soft and supple.

Single edge razor will not cut the hair far below the skin.

Using the right soap will lubricate the skin and also kill bacteria, most shaving creams are not suited for pubic region.

Shaving with the grain of the hair helps prevent the hair from being pulled up and snapping back below the skin level.

The Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch creme or ointment is a two part benefit Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid and the creme or ointment base helps keep the skin soft and supple.

Would love to hear your feedback............

Ok so I'm with her on this one... I've never had any problems.  I think it really depends on the model and she should know how to make sure she looks good in a bikini (not that being able to give advice isnt a great idea, I'm just saying I think it largely depends on the person) As far as "communicating to the model" I don't think you should have any problems being totally upfront to your models about your expectations.  If your doing a shoot in a bikini (specially if its a bikini that is provided) you should make sure your clear as to "whats expected" and that includes making sure the model is cleanly shaved/ waxed whatever.

I did go for the plucking finally. It did not hurt as bad as I thought, but it takes a lot of time. I found out that to minimise pain, it's best to do it in the evening, after a hot shower and to pluck in the direction the hair grows, while holding the skin tight. It hurts more as one goes down or on the side (close to the thighs). Now, I hope it will last long and that the hair will be easier to pluck away next time.

I wonder what to do with the very fine hair that grows higher (and on arms). It wouldn't show, if my hair was lighter or my skin darker. But since both are not going to happen, I wonder what to do. Plucking it would be loooooong...

May I make a comment?

Being the future Professional Esthetician? :-D

Waxing, is the best way to go. HOWEVER...

If you are using Retin- A, or any of those types of products- expect skin to come off.

Hard wax is awesome, it really does not hurt.

Some people bleed as well- it is a natural thing, especially if you are new to waxing.

My advice- Try going to someone and getting it professionally done, rather than doing it on yourself. You will thank yourself after the first three waxes, smile

My instructions to models include requesting that whatever part of the pubic area they shave, it needs to be freshly shaved to eliminate a distracting "shadow", especially with dark-haired girls. One of my models who had modeled nude for me before and was now pretty relaxed about modeling for me, and is "bald", arrived and went into the bathroom to put on her make-up. Then she came out nude, grabbed a container of shaving gel and a razor out of her bag and went back in and shaved herself. Then she came back out to where my wife and I were sitting in the home studio, got some creme out of her baq and stood in front of me talking to me about her day while she massaged the creme into the area she had just shaved, dancing a little from one leg to another while she did it. It takes a lot to break my concentration, but I have to admit, I have no idea how her day went.

i am getting the permanent laser hair removal and can't wait...but will have to because it's so pricey...hehehehe.. also had to wait because i've been out of town almost every single weekend for the month of april.

ok so until that day arrives i have to shave because the thought of waxing is pure torture to someone who has experienced that pain before.

since i know that i'm getting it "lasered" i was instructed to shave and not wax anyway. prior to modelling i was happy keeping it nicely trim and manicured, but i still had bikini line bumps. i've been using the depilatory but overall, i'm unsatisfied with the whole process because i still have to deal with bikini line bumps. yuk.

i've tried tend skin before (it smells horrible) and didnt work.

as for the neosporin...use something like neosporin or actually neosporin?

what ive decided to try from this thread is
1. shaving daily
2. exfoliating before shaving
3. dr bronners peppermint liquid soap
4. neosporin afterwards

hope this works, if not then i will try the talcum-powder-dry-shave

i hate ingrowns, ugh. =[
