There is already a POTD and Image of the day, but I was thinking MM needs a dark/goth/vamp/mysterious etc image of the day.

In scanning other ports, I see tons of candidates.

Anyone think this would be viable ?

That would be awesome , I think they also need to do a digital art of the day . That would be awesome and it could also include vampire images . Maybe like a photomanipulation contest because I see alot of digital works , vamps included going unoticed .

Why don't you be the moderator of it.
I think if someone will step up to the plate, then it'll more likely happen.
Most likely it'll be a thread contest though.

I'll definitely moderate the dark one.. The digital art one someone else should take because I would want to participate in that one.

If I moderate, I won't be able to enter my own images..

I'm thinking of getting this going before the end of the week.. I have so many (Dr.) Evil ideas.

I would love to do the digital art one from a fantasy perspective lol
I mean I would love to start one .
Would I have to contact mm moderators to see if I can do it ?

Good idea, it would be a hard, be interesting to see Laura Dark and Springhill in the same competition.

I would deffinatly be intersted.

Would it just be "dark image of the day" or would each day have a category?

A few problems:

1. A moderator, someone willing to take their time to do this right and not enter.
2. Defining "dark"
3. I'm not sure the existing moderators like the idea of clogging up the General Forums with more contests.

Methinks there should be a "contests" subforum!

It can't be any worse than "Is this a scam?" "Why do models flake" "Film or Digital" and all those other awesome 600 post strong threads..

I doubt it would be an issue, but I'm going to send a note to the mods regarding their thoughts on the issue.

I would be interested in moderating the digital art contest of the day as well. smile
Let me know if I can help in any way. Love the ideas!

Edit: Although I also love to participate. Count me as a backup for the moderating thing. (If the idea will be approved by MM) smile

Hahh.. you just put an image of Springheel in a wet T-shirt in my head.. Please gouge out my eyes..

I disagree -- I think given the topic, everybody would have a chance at winning..

I'm not allowed to submit, but there are lots of people with some pretty dark stuff out there..

I'm also thinking tech noir, 50's detective and all those sorts of dark styles as well.. I think there will be enough variation for everyone to have an opportunity to win.

And perhaps we can have a dark wet t-shirt contest too.. Just in case Springheel wants to unleash his competitive spirit.

It's going to be the same as any of the others, digital artists will win the vast majority of the days....especially in a contest reserved for "dark" images.

If you are interested in having a dark contest and a digital art contest like it's stated in this thread......then exclude digital art from the dark contest and restrict it to the digital art contest.

I can guarantee you if you don't.....a month from now the gripers will come out of the woodwork complaining about how a "pure" shooter has no chance.

So it would be "Dark Concept Photo of the Day - WILD MONKEYS"  or whatever the theme that day is?  That would kinda be cool.

At first I thought you meant just a general POtD type thing.  The only problem I see is it would be hard to do because of the 18+ rule with blood and violence.  Most dark themes have those.  NOT ALL.  But most.

I do a few contests and was involved in the original PoTD as well. I don't think you need permission to start a thread, and that's all the contests are. Set the premise, state the rules, see if they will come. Thats it in a nutshell.

There have been many contests, some lost their way after a few weeks, some persevered. The biggest and the best finally got the recognition it deserved and is now in the CONTESTS forum, under the title Pic of the day. MM's moderators were not on the best of terms with the contest in the beginning and some seemed to actively fight it, locking it down and brigging the OP for submissions that were against the MM code. The rules were adjusted somewhat and now the contests are accepted as a part of the MM Lexicon.

If the subject matter is going to be mature, then you can't let it be openly accessible in the manner of the other contest threads. So the rules must be clearly stated as to what is acceptable. Then you should clearly state what is not. Like vote stacking, a common demon in the threads. Then you have to have fortitude and stick-to-it-ness to last out the doldrums and petty stuff. You don't have to ban your stuff, you just can't have your work become an issue.

Set the start and finish of each period- PotD is daily (12mid EST to 11:59pm EST) while the artist of the week contests run Tues morn to Sat Midnite, voting is sun morn to tues midnite. All of this came thru trial and error, a daily contest eats up 5-7 hours of time each day to work right, while a weekly is about 4-5 hrs twice a week. If you've got this much time to spare, InShallah. (an aside; ban the bump and chit-chat at the onset or a few individuals will make it difficult to follow the thread. Keep to pic's to make it interesting. Only the host should bump images.)

To work the images, you should be a photoshop wizard and know the limits of your skills. To work the thread secure the 1st post on every page to tell your threads tale. Get a graphic to use to bump the page when necessary. Make a winners button to make the winners part of your community.

Startup requires a lot of port viewing and your mail (15) msgs is pitifully inadequate, so a VIP account is in order.

So, in a nutshell, thats the advice I can spare now. Visit any of my threads, after the first 50 or so pages its quite interesting. Getting there is the bugaboo. Word to the wise, leave the mods out of it, if there's one you know, keep them close.

A-dee a-dee......
Ciao

Awesome idea! I've been dying for someone to do this forever. I'll be honest though... Tits and ass beat creativity almost every single time. In knowing that, there is nothing more satisfying then playing against the bikini/plastic skin crowd in their own game (POtD) and dominating.

I do think an alt or dark potd would rule though and I would definitly play it all the time.

I doubt anything like this would be openly accepted or participated in by the masses.

In short, I feel it would have a very limited participation. I for one doubt I'd participate.

Its been running for a couple of weeks now. some days have more participation than others... usually 8 or more entries I'd think but it seems to be gaining more interest and there have been some awesome images shown so far.
I'm not quite impressed with the numbers of entries yet, but I am sure as hell impressed with the work entered.

I will say that with two new contests running:
Digital Art of The Day and Dark Image of The Day, they do tend to run over into each other. I've seen the same images entered in both contests either on the same day, or one day apart.

The contest I am most interested in winning is the concept of the day because to me, it seems that people in all cetegories enter and vote. I've won it three times and I am always grateful because no matter how many or how few votes the winne rgets, they are always votes by your peers and that's important, to me anyway.
Look at it this way: I used to build model cars and I entered them in a lot of contests. The last contest I entered was in Pickering, Ontario. There were hundreds of models entered in every category imaginable, but two judges didn't show up. I was asked to be a judge. Since I had a model entered in the car:racing class, they had me judge the military armor. The main viewing room was then shut down to the public and as the doors were closing, one of the show's promoters ran in with a car and set it on the judging table and left. Not a single person saw the car except the judges.
So there were 3 of us judging the armor. The other 2 guys knew each other. I looked ata  tank and said, "Man, this is awesome." On eof the other guys came over and lifted the card that was to be kept under the tank so no judge knew the builder. He looked at it and said, "Never heard of him." That tank did not win.

In The car: racing category, the promoter of the show won first place.

I never entered another contest.

That's what I worry about with these. We're told not to stack votes and I hope we don't. But how would it be policed? Impossible, really.

I love entering these contests because the stuff I'm up against can do nothing except make me work harder. I see an image by Keeling, Kesler, New Dawn, PYPI and I know I'm going to lose but I also know that I am going to learn something.

If these two contests are done right and kept seperate, they can and should work. The deserve to.

It hasn't taken a month. You can almost tell who is going to win every time. Distinction has to be made., and the proper way to do it is as you suggest.
As an example, today in the dark contest it called 'weapons'... I have recieved three emails and two MM messages saying how much they like it. I predict zero votes because there is almost zero post work done. In these two contests, as much as I like the idea, digital creators will win 99%.
