Hi! I'm new to model mayhem and I've had a few photographers contact me for lingerie shoots. They look reputable and have worked with other models on the site but they are asking for nude photos of my body before a body paint shoot. They both say this is standard and to help them prepare for the shoot. I refused of course but why are other models shooting with them? Do most photographers want a nude pic before taking nudes?

Ask for references from the other models.

Don't do anything you don't want to.

One of the reasons for asking to see your body in a nude is to figuer out what art work will look best for you. If you have agreed to do body painting shoot You must be aware that you will have to pose nude while they are air brushing you or painting your body. Also if your not comfortabler in doing nudes ask if you can be painted over a light bikini or send them a pictuer of yourself in two peice bikini. Never give any one any thing "free" Hope your shoot turns out to be a positive experiance.

Under your profile information you say you shoot nudes. If you don't want to build your nude portfolio, I'd change that. I personally sent a nude snapshot before my first photoshoot, since I had no professional nude photos in my portfolio.

If you had nudes in your portfolio, I doubt he would ask for a photo.

If you don't feel comfortable with nude photos of you on the internet though, I wouldn't send any out and I would change your profile.

OP,  you list nudes as a genre you model so why would sending a photographer some nude be a problem.   You don't have any on your profile.   How would he/she know what they will be paying for or that you are even comfortable with nudes at all.   I don't quite get why some members have mentioned references when you haven't actually made a choice to work with that person or not.   If you are going to model nude consider have some to see or send.   MM offers a Password protected area on members profiles as well.   That password could be given to photographers who want to shoot nude.

I like to see examples of the genre I wish to shoot a model, especially nudes, since clothing shapes and hides a great deal of what a person may look like nude.

Put some bikini (micro), lingerie, implied and nude photos in your port, then photogs won't need to ask you to send them.  Like others have said, if you plan on doing a body paint job, then most likely you will have to be nude during the painting as well as the shoot.  Good luck in your shoots.  Wish you weren't over 6 miles away.

what about putting some nudes in your portfolio? that way you don't have to email them to random photographers. and, yes, some photographers will ask for those pictures if you don't have them in your portfolio. but not all photographers are legit so you kind of have to trust your instincts (and maybe check a few references).

As a model, the only thing you have to offer is what you actually look like.  If you're negotiating for a nude or body painting shoot, it's perfectly reasonable for the photographer to want to know what you look like without your clothes.

I generally offer any model who shoots with me who shoots nude or lingerie a composite, front, back and both sides, full body, with them wearing whatever is the least amount of clothing they're comfortable shooting in.  This is not for posting, necessarily, but for them to sent to prospective photographers when and if needed.

Since you don't have any nude photos in your port, it's completely reasonable that a photographer would want to see a nude photo of you before hiring you to do nudes.

In addition to not having anything in your port that actually shows your body, you also have tattoos. Although tattoos aren't an issue for a bodypainter (the paint covers them) some photographers are picky about tattoos. I have personally photographed great looking models with terrible looking tattoos, and it kind of ruins the whole image.

I've also known artists that print out a photo and draw over the top of it when working out a design to paint on a person. Since you don't have anything that would work for that in your port, it's reasonable to assume that's why they're asking.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I did send the pics after thinking about it. I'm perfectly comfortable being nude that wasn't the problem at all and you're right I should have posted some to begin with, I just didn't have any professional ones yet. I think the problem was the conversation was happening late at night, everything was booked and discussed then out of now where he says can you send me naked pics now? Lol I should have asked him to explain. Plus I wanted the images to be used professionally and thought maybe I needed to sign a contract on how they'll be used. After other photographers asked the same thing I realized it made sense. I just wanted some guidance as I've never done nude before. Wish me luck smile

-off the subject of nudes, but something that would be extremely helpful for those viewing your port, would be some full length standing shots.

The bio works. smile

I might take out the third and fifth images in your portfolio though. Your port is good enough without them. smile

In your profile you say:

Until I have more experience I will do TFP With photographers I like, however if it is a nude shoot I prefer to be paid.

Do you have experience shooting nude that you don't have in non-nude modeling? If not, the only reason to ask to be paid for nude modeling for the honor of being in your unclothed presence. Rather, I would suggest just being more particular about those photographers from whom you accept nude shoots.

Tony, Abitt, Magic, there all right! and of course having a nude helps with my planning the shoot. if you shoot "nudes" then having one in your port shouldnt be a big deal, some photographers like to plan or envision what will work, so yes i like to see nudes before a shoot.  its your choice to do nudes, but if you list nudes, then dont be shocked if they ask for one,  i wouldnt ask for a nude shoot with someone that i dont know what they look like?, its just common sense, isnt it?........................William

K I've got it! Don't be too harsh please! sad I just wanted to know some of the reasons why they need photos before a shoot. Now I realize the answer was kind of obvious but hey. Like I said I didn't want my naivety about the whole thing to be taken advantage like sending photos I shouldn't need to. Anyway ill edit the part about paid work and post in the critique forum thanks again!

Hi,

I see you are struggling with the age old question should I do nudes. I have done my share of them. I have found that before you shoot the model you should do test shots especially if the job is a major deal. $$$$

I was doing a shoot for a honeymoon resort which required travel, 3 days shooting and 1 nude scene which involved nudity and physical contact. I guarantee you I would never take an untested model to a shoot like that. We did stills and video live on a beach.  The people involved were told of the requirements.

The contact part involved the male model splashing the female with some water, the male chased her down the beach she stops and they start kissing (remember they are supposed to be on their honeymoon) She unbuttoned her top and he slips off her top and on one pass he runs his hands over her boobs very quickly and it faded to black.

These people had to be tested. This was an expensive proposition and I could not afford to do a retake esp on the physical contact part. My experience tells me and I have heard this a 1000X" Oh I can do that when we are actually shooting" Under certain circumstance by all means do the testing. If you feel uneasy about it DO NOT EVEN TRY! Dont do it. [email protected] my private e-mail. Let me know what happens.

Ok. See that was my original reply "I'll do it when I'm there" but I see from the photographers point of view that is a risk. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you

Ok. So originally feeling silly about being offended being asked to send nude photos before a nude shoot. Now I'm feeling very apprehensive about my photos ending up on a site I don't want. He's asked for multiple photos via text message. I provided them, now almost every time he contacts me its I need photos with better lighting, or with your hair down. What happens if my photos end up somewhere? Can I ask for a contract that includes those photos? I feel I shouldn't have sent them especially over text. Have any other model sent photos this way? Am I being paranoid? I understand why it would be a risk for the photographer but isn't it a risk for me too? I know I need to post sample pics in my profile so I don't have this problem but I won't have any until a photographer shoots them with me...

I mean I want the nude photos I post on the site to be professional and artistic not the ones I sent which were just basic candid front and back.

You are new so questions are understandable, but if you expect to model you should realize you don't generally have control of where images are seen/used.  Yes you can have a clause about adult sites or llama herder advertisements etc but you need to expect people to see you nude.  More restriction and the less you are likely to be booked, too much sounds like potential drama and clients move on.

If you are not comfortable with that then don't shoot it.  MM appears to have a lot of avid nude photographers and models so its a hot topic in these forums.  You need images of yourself in whatever form of modeling you do, they should be in your portfolio and sending them doesn't become and issue.

P.S. whom ever shot the images owns them, so in this case your candid images are yours not the potential photographers.  If they did show up you could request a site take them down.

Tell them you're under contract with me to shoot your first nudes.  Violation of that contract carries a $25,000 breach.  To do nudes they'll need to pay you at least $30,000 to make it worth your time.

If I understand this correctly, you had already agreed to the idea of being nude for body paint. Some of the responses seemed to assume you were questioning whether or not to do nudes.

Your question is: "Do most photographers want a nude pic before taking nudes?"

I don't know about most photographers. If your photographer is professional, which does not necessarily mean "A" professional, he or she has already worked with nudes and should be able to figure out what to do with you based on your face and some of the other images in your portfolio. If you have anything unusual, tats, hardware, scars, inverted nipples or anything else... you can describe that without a picture - if they are what they say they are. There's no real reason to see a nude photo or a series of nude photos prior to the paint.

There will be some who will not agree with what I just said.

Thank you! That was exactly my question! I've gotten a lot of "why say you do nudes if you don't" and that's not the issue at all! I'm not a photographer I don't know how the prepare. I get why they'd want to see me before they pay it's just been difficult because I haven't done any nude. It's uncomfortable sending naked pics over text to (pretty much) a stranger but not uncomfortable at all during the shoot. It's not about being naked on the Internet. I love art and don't mind posing nude for artistic purposes. I do however care if my images end up on a porn site. If I'm sending pics over text it's hard to control that. I'm really very easy to work with, no drama smile Im fine with not having control over the pics but it's not too much to ask to make sure I'm not in the back ads of a porno lol

I can see that body painters would require a a nude picture to plan their art. One body painter told me that he had planned his art from non-nude photographs that the model provided and had he seen what she looked like nude he would have dome something different in order to better show off his talent as well as the model.

I shoot quite a lot of nudes and do not require a nude photograph from the model. A good photograph in a bikini or any clothing that gives me an idea of how her body looks is all that is needed. I am then interested in the other photographs in her portfolio to see how she models. Some models are unable to pose well without a lot of direction.

I hope that helps.
