Yeah... but waterproofing your gear can come at a pretty expensive price.  And if you should destroy your gear or get it wet, you're SCREWED for the rest of the cruiseshoot.  So yeah... we're gonna pass on Las Maritas.  It's definitely a sweet location, but I don't think its worth the risk of potentially ruining one's gear and the remainder of the cruise... wink

One artist [someone who creates art with photography] advised me that when you go under [water], it doubles the price.

Since I know equipment already isn't cheap, I asked incredulously, "Really?" She confirmed her original assertion [statement].

When I started doing a tad of pricing, I found that it wasn't hyperbolic [exaggerated].

A real tog should bring at least an extra body! ;-)

Broke is right ..... Cabin is paid for but had to wipe out spending money on last minute trip to NYC for a family funeral .... I have one week to work before the trip, and that goes to rent and bills....  This has been a rough year.

One of the reasons last years cruiseboat photoshoot had 60 models and photographers was because the cruise tickets were close to $150 less than they are this year.  With the government being 'brokeass' like they are now and 1000s of people losing paychecks, it's definitely putting a crunch on the economy in general... sad

Adding one more model later today... fantastic redhead named Rose... stay tuned... borat

Our friend Jessica from Carnival called and regrettably my book deal has not come thru nor has anyone helped me obtain the millions I seek, so alas, I must gracefully decline to allocate nonexistent resources towards this kind invitation. I'm sure y'all will have a blast! ;-)

Lineup is fantastic but also can be frustrating!
Good work takes time. There are only 168 hours in a week and you don't have even a week.
You have to sleep part of that.

BTW, I am not intentionally bumping.

Looking for suggestions:

I want to travel light and bring as little equipment with me as possible on this cruise.  Besides an on-camera flash, I'm thinking to just bring a 16-80mm (24-120mm) f/3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss lens and my usual Sony A77 body.  Isn't this zoom range enough for 90% of the situation?  Do I really need to bring a 70-200mm?  Also, I will bring a side arm, a little Panasonic Lumix LX5 for those smaller occasions.

Isn't this ok already?  If not, why isn't this enough?

[deliberately quoting out of context] Usually carriers of weapons become personna non grata in MX where they may impound both person and projectile producing device and results in much unpleasantness. No personal experience--just from perusing public sources.

If you bring it, you may or may not find you need it.... But if you don't you will definitely want and need it. Consider something with a wider F stop for low or existing light shooting at sunset or on the ship

Thanks for the suggestions.  I just don't want to look like I'm moving for a camera store.

By "side arm" I meant a smaller camera to capture less epic pictures.  Not a Colt 45 or a Luger.  LOL.

I know. I use an iPhone. There is an article somewhere that asks, "Is the iPhone the only camera you need?" Of course I said NO. But as I read the article, it had some software and attachments that make it more versatile than I had suspected.

Did some very limited and specific test shots and submitted to photography instructor who was not able to distinguish between iPhone vs. Canon DSLR.

However, even after reading article and testing by unbiased prof, since iPhone doesn't do RAW, the answer remains NO--it's NOT the only camera I need. BUT I do use it to document quickly what's occurring and send to the miscreants who may have omitted my shoot to show them what they're missing.
