Is There A "War On Christmas"?
Every time I hear an uber-right pundit claim that there is a war on Christmas, I cringe. ... As I write this, for the next 7 days, there are 12 Christmas themed prime time "specials" on the major networks (not counting the Christmas theme episodes of regular series). The other religions have zero. ... These Christmas specials often feature beloved children's characters, further indoctrinating our children on Christmas. ... In my fairly-long life, Christmas has become more & more commercialized, with sellers of jewelry & cars in particular becoming more & more desperate. Sorry -- I can't believe that there is a "War on Christmas" -- I have the right to live a Christian-free life, and I can stand to have less Christmas shoved down my throat. Thoughts? Dec 09 12 09:32 am Link there's a war on my ears. they seriously need to ban xmas music in stores and restaurants! i did enjoy watching rudolph the other night although the show is kind of oddly disturbing when you see it as an adult. to me the best thing about xmas is the spirit of giving and helping others, not the gift cards. on xmas day we usually go to the indian casino and give them some of our money (they have an awesome buffet). Dec 09 12 09:33 am Link Maybe I'm weird, but I'm able to go through the xmas season happy and enjoying the fun and giving and cocktails and Santa and the music and... everything.... without thinking about religion one single time. Santa doesn't preach nor carry a bible. Dec 09 12 09:37 am Link I watch Santa's Slay to get me into that Xmas spirit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKrsAFWPnl4 Dec 09 12 09:40 am Link K E E L I N G wrote: This. +1 Dec 09 12 09:45 am Link "Is There A "War On Christmas"?" Only if your so paranoid to believe that if you see a sign, greeting card or advertisement that says, "Happy Holidays" or "Season Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas" is some how an anti Christian conspiracy. Of course there are those that are pretty paranoid. I bought cards this year, one says "have a happy holiday season" and the others "Merry Christmas". We bought them because they were cute; not to make some sort of statement. Dec 09 12 09:46 am Link Yup. Christmas won. He was a comic--like a smart and witty version of Jay Leno. He also directed many of the Kmart ads that had Rosie O'Donnel and Penny Marshal in them (they are all buds). So I was working with Kmart's ad agency and in a meeting where part of it was a pre-production meeting with Steinberg (he was on the phone). So they are discussing the Christmas ad--are they going to show the crowd waiting for the doors to open for Black Friday shopping. He mentions the pending lawsuit Kmart is facing from the year before--trampled lady suing the store. I commented that "It's just not the holidays without a lawsuit for being trampled." And he laughed! My feeble brush with greatness--making David Steinberg laugh! Dec 09 12 11:35 am Link R A V E N D R I V E wrote: 8(happy hanukkah!) Dec 09 12 11:36 am Link I laugh whenever I hear that phrase. Why is it anti Christmas just to acknowledge the existence of other winter holidays, that are just as enjoyable/meaningful to those who celebrate them? It's so much insecure ado about nothing. I am one of those strange people - one that believes in God, believes that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. But guess what? My beliefs are just that - mine - and I don't seek to push my agenda on others, even though people that don't believe in God are just as venomous as believers when it comes to looking at the opposite side as wackos. When I started to take the commerce out of everything (and the way our culture uses it as a measuring stick for almost everything), I began to realize that I could think about things as how they felt inside myself (as if that makes any sense) and the holidays are a whole lot easier to get through (until Summer gets here, I mean...)
