Why I Don't Shoot for Pay
....nobody's ever offered. Couldn't resist, I wanted a thread with the title. Jan 12 13 06:12 am Link It made me giggle!! Good one! Jan 12 13 06:14 am Link Lynn Elizabeth wrote: Yep! Jan 12 13 06:18 am Link Had me going! LOL I was expecting to see some long, drawn out, explanation about art or something. Good one! I needed that before this shoot today. Later! Put yourself out there to a few small businesses - mom n pop ice cream shops, coffee houses, etc. They need pics for flyers, newspaper ads, websites, etc. Take free coffee and ice cream as payment. Next thing you know, you're being contacted for larger businesses and projects. Maybe you can even hang a few prints as a gallery type thing in a coffee house! Jan 12 13 07:09 am Link On a semi-serious note, I've been weighing my option of "being paid" as a relatively new photog. Can't say it's a good idea for me because a) I suck and still need practice and b) I wouldn't want to claim any taxes on my work outside my day job. Great title OP, btw! Jan 12 13 07:15 am Link Thread of the week..... Jan 12 13 07:27 am Link KonstantKarma wrote: This was posted on another thread, but I think it's appropriate here. Jan 12 13 07:34 am Link I have found that cash changes the "tone" and "energy" of the shoot, and I would much rather shoot a relaxed easy-going photoshoot. I get paid enough at my "real" job! LOL! Jan 12 13 07:43 am Link I don't charge anyone. But then again I won't work with everyone that asks. I'm picky with whom I shoot. Once I was asked what my package for shooting someone and their boyfriend would be. I turned them down. There is also the point that some people will not value your work greatly unless you charge them. If you give shoots for free they assume your work is not valuable. If you charge a lot then they think you must be really good and will flock to you. Jan 12 13 07:51 am Link i had the same problem in high school. nobody offered so i never got laid. i guess mom forgot to tell me that guys are the predator, not the prey (unless they are hot or rich or dangerous). Poor us Jan 12 13 11:02 am Link I shoot for free also, and even buy them coffee or lunch afterwards ~ like you, i don't have to deal with complaints. I have an insane amount of $$ tied up in gear, but it's a hobby, so i don't worry about the $$. Besides, its cheaper than booze and drugs ~~~ m' Jan 12 13 11:03 am Link I do both. There are certain things I prefer to shoot without pay. Jan 12 13 04:13 pm Link intense_puppy wrote: i'm not sure that would make *anyone* feel better Jan 12 13 05:35 pm Link love the title! Jan 12 13 10:01 pm Link Those who wants pay, they want pay cheap. Those who was supposed to pay good never paid after the work. Those who I ask money up front don't accept. And those who pay I don't enjoy the shoot. So why bother? Then I shoot what I want and sell prints. Who want the prints pay. If nobody want I at least am enjoying it. Jan 13 13 03:14 am Link I am glad there's others who feel the way I do. There's lots of good points made here. I have a day job and my photography is my hobby, a valve to release stress. The creation of images with models is more than just a stress relief for me, it is also a thrill during the shoot because it is so much fun to create great images.
