Whats the nicest way to say "suck in that tummy"?
Without that hurt look thing that girls do. Sep 09 13 09:10 pm Link "Tuck in the tummy" ? Sep 09 13 09:13 pm Link PULL IN YOUR GUT FOR GOD SAAKES! hahahahahahahaahhahahahahahaa sheesh.. make a big deal of it just say "tummy?" they know what to do. Sep 09 13 09:16 pm Link "Suck in that gut" If she cries then she's not woman enough Sep 09 13 09:18 pm Link I just kind of just spill it out when we're taking our first test shots. "Okay here we go. Ready? Stomach in boobs out! Lets go. Click, click. I usually get a laugh. Sep 09 13 09:18 pm Link If a model seems so inexperienced that I worry about her reaction, I simply take the time to explain that certain poses will make the flattest tummy look big and all models have to watch for that. (It's the truth most of the time). If I still think she's not sure, I add that a bit of curve to the tummy is very flattering. Sep 09 13 09:20 pm Link PictureItYakima wrote: This does work well. Sep 09 13 09:48 pm Link Designit - Edward Olson wrote: I use this same wording. Telling the model to lengthen her torso gives a much better message and also helps with other posture issues. Sep 09 13 09:56 pm Link you never ever ever want a model to "suck in a tummy" - what you want is for the model to lengthen her spine, press the crown of her head toward the sky, push her chest forward and up, and square her shoulders. This creates a lovely and elegant line. Sucking it in is disastrous to the posture and often the facial expression as well lol.... best way to approach this is to teach it as "posture" - because that is what it is - if she is a bit more advanced you can talk about activation of core muscles which builds on this.... posture = elegance and always improves a shot unless you're going for the rounded shoulder slumped in look, which I deplore anyway Sep 09 13 09:58 pm Link "Lift your chest." That has almost the same effect - more, if she decides to pull in her tummy at the same time. Sep 09 13 10:08 pm Link Designit - Edward Olson wrote: +1 Sep 09 13 10:08 pm Link Doesn't bother me, would rather know than not know. Sometimes you are focusing on another part of the pose. I also like 'tighten up' that way I think of all body parts but mostly it reminds me of my stomach. I think stomach is nicer word than tummy. Tummy seems like maybe a little chubby, but either way the model should be happy. Like I said, rather not have not knowing ruin an otherwise good picture. Sep 09 13 10:17 pm Link Make it a note to say jokingly early in the session --- "suck it in and stick 'em out" Keep it lighthearted. Sep 09 13 10:19 pm Link I tell everyone suck it in even size 2 models Sep 09 13 10:20 pm Link Telling them to take a deep breath in could also work - just have to make sure that their expression is still good. I don't really care if someone tells me to suck it in (as long as they're not rude about it. ex. Suck in your gut) - I normally do anyways so I don't need to be told. Sep 09 13 10:28 pm Link Hey fatty, I'm ready when you are, so suck it in already. God... Sep 09 13 10:34 pm Link "Engage your core" and you might follow up with something like, "so that we get a really taut stomach and accentuate your curves". This is the sort of thing that can be said to any shape of model, from teeny weeny to bodaciously curvy. It's more about the posture and intent of the pose, rather than, "Yo bitch you fat." Sep 09 13 10:54 pm Link "Think tall" or "flex your abs" etc etc. Trust me, said model will appreciate the heads up for the tummy versus doing the facepalm stuff while looking at the proofs. Sep 09 13 10:58 pm Link Kitty Katia wrote: exactly. so awful looking at 200 shots and thinking "omg... why didn't he tell me I needed to suck in my tummy more??" Sep 10 13 12:29 am Link 'Stretch it out a bit' usually gets it done. If all else fails, that's what the puppet-warp and liquify tools are for. Sep 10 13 12:40 am Link I always sing it to the tune of rawhide. Stick 'em out, suck it in, rawhide.... Works best with cowgirls. Sep 10 13 12:41 am Link Talk about it in terms of their core. Engage it or harden it. It's a good thing for everyone really. Sep 10 13 12:51 am Link I tell them that even the skinniest girls need to Sep 10 13 12:52 am Link -JAY- wrote: I often find myself repeating that exact phrase when working with less experienced models. Sep 10 13 05:33 pm Link 1472 wrote: +1 Sep 10 13 05:47 pm Link I've tried declaring that I'd prefer to avoid the Warp tool at the beginning of my shoots, but it doesn't work. LOL Seriously... for those models where I know I'll have a problem, I introduce them to the term "TIBO" -- pronounced, "tee bow". It stands for "Tummy In, Butt Out!" The rest of the shoot, I merely tell them "TIBO" and they totally get it! Sep 10 13 06:04 pm Link Why should it be harder than asking them to move their shoulder to the right? Believe me they don't want their tummys looking bigger than you do. Sep 10 13 06:10 pm Link -JAY- wrote: I've said something like this on occasion. They don't take offense in fact they lament they can see their tummy in pictures. I said "well then, in that case just suck in your tummy and bring your chest out." It actually looks great in pictures. Sep 10 13 06:16 pm Link I usually say tighten your abs and straighten your back. Because that's kind of what I really want them to do - tighten up and flatten their stomach. On the other hand, if I'm doing pinup, I'll just say, suck in your stomach. I often refer them to photos of Bettie Page, who usually sucked her stomach in almost to her back. :-) Sep 10 13 06:18 pm Link "Try not to look so pregnant!" Sep 10 13 06:30 pm Link "elongate that torso" "streamline that s-curve" Sep 10 13 06:32 pm Link Most models appreciate knowing what's going to make the pose better. I usually just say "suck it in" And since most of my models are fuller figured, I like the the thought of "lift your chest" I'll have to try that one Sep 10 13 06:41 pm Link PictureItYakima wrote: +1- perfect Sep 10 13 06:49 pm Link "This is a pose that models do to look more flattering" then you show an example Sep 10 13 10:25 pm Link Garry k wrote: This. I'm a size 00 and still have to make sure I engage my torso in shoots otherwise I can look pudgy--when it's the furthest thing from the truth. Sep 10 13 11:29 pm Link The first time say suck in tummy, after that just say tummy and she will know what you mean, hopefully . Sep 10 13 11:51 pm Link for beginning models, showing the difference on camera also works wonders. Often they don't know yet how much a difference a little change in posture can mean. So show them a shot where they were a bit slouchy and not sucking it in, and then show them a shot where they elongate their body and let the tummy stick out a bit, and the difference between the 2 shots will be very motivating . After that just say "remember the tummy" everyone once in a while, or "tummy!" or "stand up straight!" Sep 11 13 12:02 am Link "Sucking it in" or flexing the stomach muscles looks stressed. Rather, I ask the model to think about the points of their rib cage, ... then the stomach is relaxed and falls flat. They tend to inhale at the same time they do this, which pops the boobs out ... an added benefit.
