It can breathe air and travel short distances over land... also responsible for devastating fish population in the region!

Jesus!

Is this the Fish Native to China that was introduced to the area some Years ago to help control the over-population of another specie and is now out of control?

God help Us...

It is old news.  The fact about the snakehead is a bit exaggerated.  We used to be able to buy them in the NYC Chinatown.  They were imported from China and sold for $10 to 12 a lb.  It is a good fish to eat.  The meat is firm, light and tasty.

When we were in Hong Kong, my mother would buy them when in the special occasion for celebration.

Maryland is technically southeast, and their fish and seafood population was shitty before the snakehead became an issue, thanks to overfishing. The whole Delmarva area needs a break for a few years, but that will never happen hmm

We need to market the frankenfish, so people will want them and buy them.  That will control their numbers.

But nobody's going to buy "a half pound of frankenfish."  We'll need to re-name them something that suggests "delicious," "tasty."

Any ideas?

So they told you and you believe it.  They really painted a bad picture on this fish.

I wonder if they also painted the picture of how dirty and filthy of Chinese were, so in the 1800's, they banned the Chinese coming into the U.S. for more than 100 years.  In addition, not until the mid 1950, Asians were not allowed to purchase real estate in California.

We destroyed everything in our path, and yet we blame the fish.

Sign says... if you catch this fish... DO NOT RELEASE!  It must be reckin havoc out there somewhere... or they wouldn't want it out of the ecosystem... hmm

out dated info.

I should hope so, since it's dated 2002. Snakeheads have been a problem in Maryland at least that long.

I guess the media has run out of horror stories with which to "wag the dog."

If the Snakehead is the Asian Carp (not 100% certain it is) they can also jump.

Um. No. It was never 'introduced' by anyone in an official capacity.

The Eastern Snakehead is considered a delicacy and some were brought over illegally and released into local ponds rivers. The original sighting was in a tiny pond in Crofton, maryland. That pond was poisoned and drained in an attempt to kill the fish. It later turned up in the Potamac River, suggesting it was illegally released by different people in different places at different times.

It is supposed to be quite tasty, but I suspect it's kept off local menus so as to not encourage breeding.

they are a creepy fish. They look like, well snake. Powerful jaws, long sleek bodies, and pretty much dominate the territory they are in. Nasty little (and not so little) suckers.

This reminds me of this thread:  https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=927950

Should Humanity Try to Contact Intelligent Aliens?

The invading species never come in peace, even they say they would be kind and loving.  The natives always ended badly.  Just look at North America, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand, where are the natives today?

No what?

Maryland isn't south of the mason-dixon?
The DelMarVa watershed isn't overfished?

I certainly didn't say "dont go fishing because the snakehead isn't a problem."

Absurd. Michigan State Department of Natural Resources - Asian Carp Fact Sheet:

Asian carp are not Northern Snakehead, not even close.
