Portraits of Senegal’s Female Auto Mechanics
No Man’s Job: Portraits of Senegal’s Female Auto Mechanics Kurtz didn’t want to create a strictly photojournalistic documentation of these women. Instead, he wanted to use his art to drive home his point stylistically. “By using studio flashes, interesting compositions and poses (then post-production in Lightroom),” he continues, “I take a painterly approach by enhancing the reality and presenting these women as modern-day heroes.” Here are the results: http://petapixel.com/2014/09/26/mans-jo … mechanics/ Sep 28 14 12:48 pm Link Where the best man for the job is.... a woman. Studio36 Sep 28 14 02:27 pm Link i dont' see them as painterly. i just see them as tacky. i think herb ritts....god rest his soul....should have been the photographer. Sep 28 14 04:20 pm Link Sep 28 14 04:32 pm Link Thanks again for putting up another interesting thread. It was interesting to see his setup. Sep 28 14 06:38 pm Link These were great. Love the opener with the torch going, and that magazine snoot Sep 28 14 07:21 pm Link How exactly are these ladies "heroes"? Is a male nurse a hero? Stupid/overly dramatic thing to write, photos are kinda meh. Sep 28 14 07:32 pm Link Not my cup of tea, something I really have no interest in knowing about, like honeyWTF's Mom grocery shopping at the gas station, something I never needed to know. Sep 28 14 07:48 pm Link Thanks for sharing the link. Great photos, great story. Reminds me of David Allan Harvey's work for NG in Nigeria. Didn't love the pictures and "hey look women in a poor country doing something associated with being a man" stories irk me a bit. Would like to have learned something about them more than just their sex to suggest heroism. Sep 29 14 08:33 am Link Daniel Leon wrote: He didn't say they are heroes. He said he lit them so as to enhance reality and present them as if they were. My Mother was a WAVE in WWII and rebuilt radial aircraft engines and my aunt built P38's at Lockheed. Perfectly fine to enter a discussion to point something you disagree with, in this case the try hard attempt of making people seem extraordinary for no reason.
