No Man’s Job: Portraits of Senegal’s Female Auto Mechanics

Kurtz didn’t want to create a strictly photojournalistic documentation of these women. Instead, he wanted to use his art to drive home his point stylistically.

“By using studio flashes, interesting compositions and poses (then post-production in Lightroom),” he continues, “I take a painterly approach by enhancing the reality and presenting these women as modern-day heroes.”

Here are the results:

You should see his series on people who wear white after Labor Day.

I think his point is that he's lighting and posing them, and color grading the photos, and not just trying to 'document' them with minimal intervention.

How exactly are these ladies "heroes"?

Is a male nurse a hero?

Stupid/overly dramatic thing to write, photos are kinda meh.

Not my cup of tea, something I really have no interest in knowing about, like honeyWTF's Mom grocery shopping at the gas station, something I never needed to know.

Thanks for sharing the link. Great photos, great story. Reminds me of David Allan Harvey's work for NG in Nigeria.

You know the world is different outside of your little cocoon.

You should travel to a third world country to see how society oppress women, especially in Africa.

I can see why you'd take this view. Didn't love the pictures and "hey look women in a poor country doing something associated with being a man" stories irk me a bit. Would like to have learned something about them more than just their sex to suggest heroism.

He didn't say they are heroes. He said he lit them so as to enhance reality and present them as if they were.

Very nice. I love the second image especially. It kind of reminds me of Joey L's work.

fyi, the term "third world" is now regarded to be a derogatory and out-of-date...

Believe me I know what it's like in other places in the world, but women mechanics in Senegal? Not something I'd care about. And I know about women mechanics!! My Mother was a WAVE in WWII and rebuilt radial aircraft engines and my aunt built P38's at Lockheed.

It's odd to me that you are investing any time or energy into a thread about something in which you have no interest.

So you're only ever interested in views that agree with yours?  Perfectly fine to enter a discussion to point something you disagree with, in this case the try hard attempt of making people seem extraordinary for no reason.

Kind of like trying to make common ordinary pine branches extraordinary for no reason. That's messed up! There is nothing special about these pine needles!
