Hi Mariusz,
am I right, that the grid on the softbox causes more sharpness to the model's contours or is it a postprocessed result?
Thanks,
Marco

Actually I use grids on my softboxes to make light more directional.
Grid helps me to put light where I want it, and not where I don't.

Bumpity BUMP BUMP BUMP!

Hey all! Found some really funky as well as helpful links on this site: http://www.vandyll.net/?tag=photography

Some of the links DO work... some don't. But this one is especially entertaining:

http://www.photoworkshop.com/static/lig … index.html
http://www.photoworkshop.com/rooms3d

BUT... the Hensel Light Guides are very cool and those links do work. Haven't been through the whole thing on the vandyll.net, but glad to have come across it though. Hope that people find use for the links.

I used 84” silver PLM as background. I wanted to get some  shimmer light on model’s skin so I suspended a hammock vertically fairly close to the model. I placed AB1600 with 7” reflector and 20 degree grid about 6-7 feet away from hammock. This way hard light was partially softened by hammock but still was leaving distinguishable marks on the skin.

A bum bump BUMP! Found a fascinating blog from one of Dick Avedon's assistants in the 50's and 60's.

http://lifeslittleadventures.typepad.co … don_years/

He talks quite a bit about Dick's lighting as well as approach to photography. Not so much a "hand-held" lesson mind you but well worth the read!

Dick Avedon is a personal hero of mine!

Yes... and don't forget a rounded gold reflector on left side of the model, eye level...

For what I can see... ;-)

Where do you see this? Because I didn't have a reflector that day... it was the first time I ever shot available light, wasn't planning to shoot outdoors...

Sorry Tim, may be I'm wrong, but we can clearly see a round shining catch light on both model's eyes... also looking at here nose shadow...

Seems like sun was rising at her back - on her right side - and something is reflecting hot light on her front from the left... I would say cross-lighting.

Ah,and may be reflector device was at her hip level aiming up to the face... once again looking at her nose shadow and considering that head was tilted down...

Am I wrong?

Hmm, you see a lot, impressive. Yeah, I was just sitting in a lawn chair while we were catching a smoke out back. I know there was a house on that side, and my yellow truck right behind. Maybe I was just lucky, lol. Either way, it convinced me to shoot available more often, glad it happened.

So, we can suppose that the catch light is coming from you car's windshield and the yellowish/golden light on model's left side is due to you car's color... both together with the sunrise gives a good lighting.
Last year, during an editorial shoot of a bike at Mugello Circuit I used my silver car like a big reflector to fill shadow due to sun rising at her back... and the journalist was really happy for that!

Another one where the 27" Beauty Dish is aimed at the model with the sun for ambient/fill.

Calumet Travelite 750 @ 1/2 power about 6' away and with the center of the dish about nose level.
