Photographers should be behind the camera. Stop trying to take pictures of the picture taker! Sneaky bastards! You know who you are...with your little camera phones and pocket digital POS's. I have pics of you too! Don't make me use them!

#1 rule: make the shot the best you can.

Sometimes that means "f/8 and be there" (or, these days, "f/2.8 and be there" [grin]); sometimes it's waiting hours to set up to be ready when the light's Just Right, and sometimes it's spending hours prepping a set.

Everything else is mechanics.

Using the Rule of Thirds helps produce nicely balanced easy on the eye pictures. Also, as you have to position things relative to the edges of the frame it helps get rid of ' tiny subject surrounded by vast empty space' syndrome.
One last thing about the Rule of Thirds for the time being. Once you have got the hang of the Rule of Thirds you will very quickly want to break it ! Leading back to the no rule theory.

Actually, I think it's "No killing and eating the model, even if she *REALLY* deserves it." But that could just be me.

I want to make a joke saying eating is OK if you're dating her, but I won't...
