I am a failure as real woman because I am not overweight!

Please notice, this woman is 22 years old and quite tall. She is within the range for plus sized models. At 5 inches shorter but the same weight, you are not.

Persoanlly, I relate to Kate Moss better than someone who's favorite film is "What's Love Got to Do With It," but I'm not a real woman, so I don't count.

Of course, models aren't supposed to be the women we relate to. They're the supposed to be women we aspire to be. That's marketing.

plus size modeling is an offshoot of fashion modeling..
the same criteria exists for plus size, as standard fashion models..except a larger dress size, still 5'7"-5'11" tall, still need a 10 in differential in waist and hips..most are late teen to early 30's.

read this http://www.newmodels.com  i hope it doesn't contradict me to bad...

as for real girls..my favorite model is 16 years old..so i drive her occasionally..i have yet to drive to a shoot where we were able to pass a fast food joint..i have never seen a human being eat more food in one sitting and still have space to reach over and eat my food, yet she never gets past 103 lbs...

i assure you, she is every bit "real girl" as there is...

Since I'm not a real woman, perhaps I'm a plant. I mean, I have to be soemthing right? And I don't meet the weight requirements for real woman.

Umm... I hate to break it to you... but there is HUGE difference between you and that model...  A huge difference...  and I doubt she is worried about someone liking "big tits" and makeing a fuss over it.  And if she is focused on the positive - then there is an even bigger difference between the two of you.  Damn, why did you stop there why not compare yourself to Pamala Lee...  Sheesh

Alexandra,

While I certainly applaud body diversity (obviously), may I suggest that the use of the word "real" - as though slender women somehow aren't women - isn't a great way to promote size acceptance and plus models?  I've seen a plethora of stunning models on this site of all sizes, and they are all real women - each unique and individual, with her own kind of body.  There's nothing wrong with being plus sized, I agree, but it saddens me to see that claim made at the expense of more slender women.

Can't we all be real?  smile

I agree with shyly's statment.

We are all real women. Toccara is a beautiful person. I admire her and loved her on top model.  I think it would of been better to say TOccara is a plus model that I admire. I like the fact she stuck to fashion instead of porn sites. I admire her because she went from being  online in  "SIMPLY trashy too sexy sites"   to become a fashion model. Just goes to show you that if you work hard enough anything is possible.

I also think that kate moss is just as beautiful as a plus model. Skinnier models are beautiful. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. What we need to do is embrace and just model. Why do we have to have categories? I hope that one day a model will just be a model. Who cares?  The photos speak for themselves.

My favorite story about being real is the Velveteen Rabbit.

All women are beautiful in their own way! The only unattractive women I've ever seen usually worked hard to make themselves that way.

Toccara is beautiful.  I was sorry she was booted off ANTM so early in the game.  I hope she found an agent after the show.

I don't think you can compare plus models to fashion models, it's like comparing apples to oranges.  Theres a market for both but I think it's silly to throw a plus model into the ANTM show like the did Toccara and expect her to compete.  They need a seperate show for plus models.

The average woman in  the US is a size 12-14 (latest stats I saw, don't know how accurate they are)  so more real women do identify with plus models but I think the average woman would still prefer to see fashion on thin models, if we want to see real people we can hang out at KMART. Keep in mind the average woman is also older then the average model so the size difference isn't so odd, older and wider....it kinda goes together unfortunately.  Models are not average women...thats why they are called "Models" smile

Just had a shoot for "resort wear" swimwear and lounge wear. Basically bright florals in bikinis, sun dresses, wraps, sarongs, bags and accessories. The models the client wanted were a bit larger than my usual swimsuit girls, ranging from 8 to 14 in dress sizes. Great to work with. Shoot went fast and clean. No different than any other day, maybe a few less gawking guys, but just a few. There is definitely work out there for "average" body shapes.

I'm not even going to respond to the negative comments on this thread. And no I'm not saying skinny girls are not REAL women. I'm saying it's all about the attitude. I'm sure I were anorexic and close to death I'm sure that I would be taken more seriously right? How sad. *shakes head and walks off.*

Sorry Alexandra;

Just because America is the most obese of all industrialized nations, and hence the amount of "fuller woman" (not obese yet) is higher, doesn't make them anymore "real" than does all the health problems that come WITH enhanced bodyfat ratio.

I am sorry, but that doesn't have anything to do with superskinny models, it's just a medical fact that too much bodyfat ("big boned") is taxing the body, the kidney and the liver, that lipid content in blood is higher, the stresses on joints and bones increase.

Cardiovascular problems are also a part of it.

I do understand that "curvy" models complain about the toned ones and call them stick figures etc. and that many of them may feel being "left out"... but your are not more "real" than a fit one... just "more".

No discrimination meant and uttered... just don't think that "big boned" models are any more REAL than the other ones.

Despite the "reality" that America is a "big boned" nation.

BTW, I was shooting the girl of the OP at Fashionweek when she was modeling lingerie. Have her pictures stored somewhere.

Still, even her, although pretty either has or will have some serious health problem... where is the hope in that?

Not that I'm interested in participating in this shit-slinging fest (hence my comments on the first page), but I thought I'd weigh in (har har har) on this particular topic...

http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/diet.fit … index.html

"The new analysis found that obesity -- being extremely overweight -- is indisputably lethal. But like several recent smaller studies, it found that people who are modestly overweight have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight."

This might be my own personal soapbox, but I take issue with the whole overweight=unhealthy idea. I for one (and I'm surely not alone) strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I lift weights five days a week, run a few miles a day, and eat well. I am also very heavy for my size, and have always been. I guess I'm what was referred to as "big boned". Thus, when someone tells me that because I am heavy, I either have or will get X, Y, and Z, I take exception. There are healthy, active people at every size and there are people who sit on the couch all day and eat all manner of crap at every size. I know people who started to smoke and continue to smoke in order to keep off weight. Would they be healthier if they quit and gained 20 pounds? Weight and lifestyle are definitely not as linked as people think, and lifestyle is a MUCH better predictor of health. There are exceptions of course. Because of my weight, I'm putting a lot more strain on my joints by running than an average/underweight female would. Then again, I'll never get osteoporosis, which causes so many problems for older underweight women. It's all about tradeoffs. There is new research out that shows that the "obesity epidemic" is more hype than fact. You can read about it if you're interested:
http://press.arrivenet.com/hea/article.php/625454.html
You can believe that or not as you'd like, but you have to admit that there is a whole lot of money paid for incredibly stupid diet and weightloss plans that are definitely doing more damage health wise to the average dieter (trying to lose 20 pounds give or take) than staying at their prior weight was doing.
People have body type preferences, which is fine. But to just go and lump all heavy women together and say we're going to get all these awful diseases because of our weight? Come on, let's be reasonable. We shouldn't try to justify personal aesthetic preferences for body type (in either direction) in terms of health.
