FYI....I bought a 380Watt 600VA Cyber Power pack to power my Photogenic Solair PLR500's.  If I powered them over 75WS they shut down, and so did the pack.  I was thinking of buying a more powerfull unit and even looked into ones made specifically for lighting and there is nothing.  Photogenics' circuitry that protects the unit from over-use as well as keeping the constant color is the cause of why I can't power them that way.  When I contacted Photogenic about a solution, they said they are in development of a mobile power devise (that is how I got the explaination of why it fails to work with other solutions). Unfortunately, a Honda generator is my only option for the time-being (not too portable).  I do have the 320Bs that are powered by batteries (the reason I got them in the first place) but I wish I could get more power. Here's a test of my son with the light about 5.5' away.  Granted I didn't do any post-processing asside from adding +.5 stops from RAW. (and yes, I have since given my sensor a Brazilian Wax)

Jim Ewing - if you look at the sun in your pic and come down a bit and to the left - is that dust or an effect from the flair?

thanks for a great thread everyone - it's given me some ideas  smile

It was a hair on the sensor...hence the Brazilian Wax comment.

My question is, is this kinda formula good for the lighting on these type of shots...

^^^ The above,

I imagine the above is late day, sundown-ish, light with a bare bulb of some sort as the additional source besides natural, ISO 100-200, f3.5-f6, +1 (although, I have seen great lighting and clarity out of a 5D or higher at ISO 640 and f10-11)...

I dunno, just guessing... the alchemy of it baffles me no matter how I try

produce most of my images.

now we know how you get that forever depth  of field.    you cant do that so easy on a full frame or 6x6.      you do have a inspired mind to create , that cannot be taught or reproduced.

R1 rules! I do a lot with it. My avatar, for example. Nothing can touch it in certain areas.
