I just got an email from a model. I have never contacted her before. This is the first time she has ever contacted me.

This is literally the entire email:

"hey check my pics out let me know if you would like to work with me! what is the pay?"

Wow ...

So, I replied:

"Sure. I'd work with you.

What is the pay?

The fees that models pay me to build their portfolios will vary depending upon how long of a shoot you would like to do. There is a ratesheet on my website. Feel free to look it over and let me know when you'd like to book an appointment."

Loved your reply to that model! The problem is there there are a lot more model wannabees than there are modeling careers. Guess they have to try anything, hoping that something will turn up.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!

Shut up, man! Don't TELL them that.

"Pay no attention to that Joe fella, ladies. You CAN be the next Cindy Crawford! ... Oh ... You're black? ... Um. Okay. Okay ... You CAN be the next Tyra Banks! ... Yes! Really! And I can help you get there for the low, low price of just $19.95 (paid in 100 easy installments)!"

Good for you! I mean I dabble with photography myself and when I put my photos on another site, there was this wannabe model agency wondering how much I was paying models. They obviously didn't read that I was a starving artist and couldn't afford to pay.

That reality check might be a bit much for her Eric. Sounds like she's more of the "blue pill" type.

Speaking of clueless.... So I e-mail a model I think has a fabulous look and horible pictures. I write her a message about half a mile long telling her a bit about me, ask her what type of modeling she would like to do etc. Somewhere in that half mile is questions about her area which is a couple hours from me. I asked about places I might want to research for potential shoots, if she had any in mind, etc. etc. etc. Her response was one sentence. "Hey, if your ever in _______, let me know!".

Grrrrrrr.....

So I politely asked her to elaborate a bit. I've received no response.

Hmmm, maybe it's the same girl?

I saw that post but you can have the internet book for 9.95 but if you just read,  then you can get all the information for free.

And if you pay into my web-site or pay for my web-site developing services or my make everyone look the frigin same OMP associated and in cahots with photographers who sell you images that no one in the industry wants or needs.

Now all you models read my quantum William mechanics Hung theory of modeling which for friggin free in the General comments section of the forums.  Long for friggin sure it is but it costs you bloody nothing.

But do not copy it,  and use it is some lame ass book you are selling for 19.95 when you stole all the information anyway.

Not to mention try out www.newmodels.com and that will tell you much for free if not all.

goodnight you friggin freakin snotty nosed mobby lovers you

I got an e-mail just like that Eric. It said, I really like your work and I would love to work with you and then she told me she was only doing paid assignments.

I'll take "no-mind" for $100.00 Alex~

LMAO...actually I had forgotten about this one girl who contacted me about coming down from Seattle to shoot with her and then dropped the whole I only do paid shoots. My response was so do I.

Sad thing is that she really didn't have one good shot in her profile =o(

And Scott I think that is a daily double

Yep, you get all kinds.  Here's one (unsolicited) that I received just this morning...

"I was just wondering how much you charge for a shoot? Or how much I would be able to get for a shoot? Sorry no nudity."

To top that, she has Nude and Artistic Nude checked on her porfolio.  Go figure.

Eric,  I agree and I guess that Vision  Mindmapes does have some use. (not that I do)

Very Succinct.  (Mark goes to look up what Succinct means--and the crowd yells "Thankyou already"

"Pay me half before the shoot and pay me the rest after."

I like it.

These exchanges sound like SO MANY I've had with the types I'd classify as "wannabees" - and I have no problem with a wannabee but it's truly stunning the one-line responses or the absolute silences you get from people who supposedly want to be professionals in this space.

I very often respond with several questions to someone who I'd consider shooting.  How many times I've never heard back, or gotten that vapid one-liner, wow.

It just so happens that when you offer a SERVICE people want it for free.  But when it comes to a PRODUCT they are willing to pay.  If I owned a car dealership would you ask for a free car?   NO?!? then why would expect me to you do your makeup for free?  I don't know about all of you, but my time is very valuable.
At least I don't have it as bad as you photogs and have people wanting me to pay to do their makeup!!  lol - good luck with that

Oh, come on. The model who wrote to me made an ass of herself. That is exactly why I did NOT reveal her name. I'm not going to say who she was. That was the whole point. The girl is clearly lacking in intellect; The least I can do is spare her some dignity.

Here is my 2.8 seconds of thought.... as professionals here...it's easy if we grown as a group...educate those new to the industry, for at times it's easy for those to be suck into what it is we do. Bring something good out of this forum you post...learning processes we have all grown through. If they don't understand they are the client or you are the client....educate is a easy forum from which we can learn......it's free....no down payment or free prints come from this thought.....it's bringing what it is we do to a front where we all learn

And then there are those who take it up a notch and say that not only do they only do paid shoots, but they expect unedited copies of the whole shoot, high-res on CD, and full copyright to do what they wish with them.

No, no and... um... no. Drive through, please.

She wrote back. This is her entire response:

"haha, thats funny, i asked you what the pay was?"

This is my reply:

I'm sorry. I thought I answered your question. Since you are failing to correspond with me using full sentences, I am having to guess at what you are asking. I do not understand the query "what is the pay?"

I assume that you are looking to build your portfolio so you can work as a mainstream model with an agency? If so, I can help with that. My rates are really reasonable.

When models hire me to shoot with them, the cost they pay will vary. Normally, I ask for a $50.00 downpayment to book a timeslot. The rest of the balance is due upon delivery of the photos. The total cost is determined by how long they want to shoot. The costs are on my ratesheet which you can view on my website.

Or, you might be a hobbyist model who is accustomed to having amateur photographers pay you to shoot with them? But, since my profile clearly states that I do NOT pay models, I'm sure you aren't expecting me to pay you. Only a model who was a complete idiot would fail to read the profiles of photographers she was contacting. And you seem too professional and intelligent to do something that stupid.

So, since I know you aren't a moron who is asking me to pay you to be photographed, I can only presume that "what is the pay" means you want to hire me to shoot with you and you are asking how much I get paid for providing my photography services. Correct?

HAHAHA!!!

Damn that was funny!

I remember I had a Cinci model ask me to shoot her and wanting me to pay her. I looked at her port and website and they had all these ultra shitty pics that were obviously taken by her boyfriend (for she was naked on the living room floor and his naked foot was in the shot, So I can guess that they probably just had sexuals).
I told her I don't pay amatuers, she said she was a professional model, I asked her wqhere were the professional pics then?

Never heard from her again.

I just got an email from another site with Experienced checked as well as nude, artistic nude, glamour, glamour nude, adult nude, nude in a cup, erotic nude, dog and cat nude, car nude, jell-o nude, mud nude and goat and sheep nude.

The message is (and I quote) as follows:

"Hi, nice picstures on your portfoloi.

I have ben modelling 4 2 years now and i need more pictures for my portfolio so how much do you pay?

I can travel 2 u expenses pade but for mileage I want a hotel room for me and escort. I don do any nudes so dont ask.

Write back.
****** (name witheld)"

I checked out her portfolio and there were 4 images there. All of them were her looking in a mirror, holding her phone to take the photo. Everything on her port was checked (see above list).

I didn't respond because she is basically saying "Pay me to give me more pics for my portfolio"

I may be stupid, but I didn't fall out of the third floor window on my head.

Now to offset that, I have worked with several very professional models (they still don't have goat and sheep nudes checked, but they still rock)..

That's the blender this Internet is.. Everyone with a camera  is a photographer and everyone with 2 arms and 2 legs is a model.

It's up to us (models and photographers) to pick and choose to weed out the ones who either need to improve, or just give up and take up farming.

I still have miles to go to become a good photographer, but I'm still picky when I shoot now. I don't contact everyone with body heat to shoot with me..

Off my soapbox now.. Damn I'm short.. smile
