Models And Physical Appearances
Yesterday I had a conversation with an aspiring model who 2 weeks ago who was packing a gut. I informed her of a workout plan to help her tone it up (the same one Tre gave me, lol) . So I checked back with her and she said she didn't do shit about her condition, that she was sexy with the gut. I then informed her I wouldn't be shooting her, just because the dudes on the block think it's sexy, doesn't mean it's sexy in this line of work. So my question is, do you girls take your health and physical appearance seriously? because i'm seeing more and more a lot of out of shape girls trying to model, and i'm wondering , if you don't have standards in yourself, why should anyone that's looking to hire you or shoot you? May 29 05 09:01 am Link Boy Howdy! You've hit on one of my pet peeves for sure..... People who sit on their butt and wait for the world to beat a path to their door!! (I'm not just picking on models here, there's enough of that in every occupation) I have a model friend who has battled a weight problem for life. The answer? 2 hour-a day workouts 6 days a week!! The thing that most people never think of when they look at the best models is the amount of work that goes into looking that good. That may sound like vanity to some, but it's their stock-in-trade. Anything worth having is worth working for. Sounds like this one just don't want it bad enough. - CH May 29 05 09:33 am Link Anyone can choose to be beautiful. May 29 05 09:47 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: oh yeah baby....that "ghetto sexiness" lol May 29 05 10:12 am Link Plus sized modeling I can see, I have NO qualms with that or models in that field. But when you come at me talking about you want to be in (insert booty mag name here, though I have to admit that the booty mags quality of models has REALLY dropped off over the past 2 years) and you just think because some dudes on the street be hollin at you (because in actuality they just want to fuck) doesn't mean you have what it takes to be magazine material... Let alone to get in front of my lens. BTW Angel, i'll be hitting you up soon. But first I have to knock out a few others. *wink* May 29 05 10:23 am Link right, my point was models of all sizes do what it takes to maintain good porportions... hit me up? ok, you know where to find me and if that doesn't work, you know who to ask, LOL May 29 05 10:27 am Link Posted by Angel Tara: Jesus Jones? May 29 05 10:41 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: "To each their own" ... I usually say. May 29 05 11:20 am Link Just tell them you will not shoot them - move and and do not waste your time.. Telling them to go get fit - is like telling a person to stop smoking.... its does not work.. Now I have seen the opsite a few times - usually with models with their own sites - the members tend to drive them to go to the stairmaster more often and as they look better and better they get more compliments and viola - all toned and sexy.. But this is rare.... the models I know all skinny and toned - eat more than me - and never work out.... and yes I hate them for it - becasue I have to work and and eat right.. dammit.. May 29 05 11:52 am Link Being curvy is one thing, being unhealthy is a whole diffrent story. From the sounds of it this girl may have had a nice figure [ asuming here!] save for the gut. Doesn't she understand the meaning of looking healthy? Having a well blanaced looking figure? I do what I can to stay healthy and improve my figure. i've started running to improve the tone in my legs. I watch what I eat to ensure i am healthy. You shouldn't take your health for granted. If you do, it may bite you in the ass. May 29 05 01:49 pm Link "The first wealth is health." - Emerson I am I little biased on this one because I am obsessed with health and fitness. I weight train like crazy to build muscle and keep weight on and eat a lot of foods with "good" fats to keep curves too. If I didn't do that I would be very thin and bony as I naturally have "skinny" genes, and I do not like the way that looks. If you take great care of yourself while you are young, it is much easier to keep it up as you get older. The benefits of eating right and exercise are truly amazing in not only how they affect your looks on the outside, but in preventing illness and maintaining a happy life in general! Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes but health and fitness should be important to everyone. May 29 05 02:35 pm Link I'm in horrible physical shape, but I don't look it to most people because so many people think unhealthy=fat. I should put more effort into my health not because I'm worried about what I look like, but just because I'd feel better. If I looked unhealthy, my vanity might kick in and get me to work out, perhaps. I do have a beauty ritual for my skin and I keep my roots dyed and such, so I clearly put effort into my appearance. As for the example model if she's happy with how she looks and there are people interested in her for her appearance, then fine. You as a photographer are still not obligated to work with her if you don't think her appearance is up to snuff. You're also perfectly welcome to tell her it's because of her gut, but I agree that giving her workout recommendations is uncalled for. If she's happy with her body, she won't listen. It's preachy and annoying to offer unsolicted advice like that. May 29 05 04:40 pm Link Sooner or later it is logical that there will be a shift in the way society views a perfect body. Photographs, especially nudes has changed dramitically since the 70's and before. I think the disco dancing fad and at the end the movie "saturday night fever" made many people realize that they were out of shape. Then came the fitness craze and beyound. Six packs are idealized with youth today and society in gereneral. I would think there will be a backlasch within the youth culture and society in general at some point. Only time will tell. But this person may just be displaying the fact that she and the boys that like her could care less. They could care less if there stomaches have a six pack or are even flat. They could care less even if photographs excentuate this fact. So if someone does not look thin enough to look thin in a photograph, I just decide if she fits the photo and if not just say next. The way society has viewed a tan changes often. Even different sectors of society view the body differently. Time will tell, But not much stays the same. May 29 05 05:02 pm Link Well, that's too bad. because i'm a bottom line person. if you're a sloppy fat ass, i'm going to tell you. Don't like it, tough cookies. reason is, I would LOVE for people to tell me the truth, don't feed me a beautiful lie, that only pisses me off and deceives my senses. That's like if I posted a horrible shot, and everyone kissed my ass and told me it was hot simply because they were my "friends." REAL friends would tell me that the shot SUCKS and I would appreciate the truth and go back to the drawing board. Same with models/aspiring models. Just because a chick is cute doesn't mean i'm going to kiss her ass just for the sake of some damn frames. Cute girls are a dime a dozen, and I would rather be associated with the serious model than the casual model. Yes I told her she was fat, she agreed that she was fat and out of shape, I even gave her a workout regiment that she agreed to in principle and failed to follow it, so I dropped her, what's your problem with that? If I showed up to shoot you with disposable cameras, you'd be bitching about how unprofessional I was, so now that the shoe is on the other foot, i'm wrong??? whatever. May 29 05 05:41 pm Link "I then informed her I wouldn't be shooting her, just because the dudes on the block think it's sexy, doesn't mean it's sexy in this line of work." And I wonder why A LOT of models have eating disorders like ana or mia. Just because the girl has a little gut shouldn't mean you cant work with her ... Big girls can be sexy. Sure I eat chocolate, pizza, greasy food, sweet food and I haven't worked out in months. If I have a shoot coming up and think I need to lose a little to look better you better know I'm gonna do it the model way. May 29 05 08:55 pm Link Posted by CO Model Amber: Whats the model way?? May 29 05 10:05 pm Link Appearances are a matter of realism and where someone wants to go as a model If "Ms Gut" wants to be on vogue...no way. If she wants to be some porn fluffer, she can do that... Its all in where and what you wanna go, and do. May 29 05 11:32 pm Link Posted by Angel Tara: Posted by CO Model Amber: Whats the model way?? Love your sarcasim  May 29 05 11:47 pm Link Sarcasm? I, too, would like to know what the "model way" is? May 29 05 11:49 pm Link I'm sure Kate Moss and Tyra banks would know  May 29 05 11:55 pm Link You mean let the retouchers deal with it? May 29 05 11:57 pm Link My goodness  May 29 05 11:59 pm Link Amber, why don't you just come out and say what you mean. May 30 05 12:00 am Link I already said it once  May 30 05 12:01 am Link I actually take my physical apperance kinda seriuos, I mean i don't work out everyday 24/7, but i do try to stay active daily, I may not be in the gym everyday and i wouldn't say I am a health nut but I try to eat right and keep my body toned. May 30 05 12:04 am Link Wow...at first when I read this post, I thought, "omg I KNOW Bey isn't telling MY business" Listen, I think there is a difference between a girl that is "thick" and a girl that is fat. Thick is when you have meat on your bones, some curves in your figure. Fat...is when your bust size is dam near close to your WAIST size! Just because a girl is a plus sized model doesn't mean that she is "fat". She is big boned. Shoot, I've seen quite a few Lane Bryant models who have FLAT stomachs! And they are PLUS SIZED MODELS! Anyway, Bey just wanted you to know that I am getting ready for our shoot this upcoming weekend. Wish me luck everyone~ May 30 05 12:38 am Link i have lots to say on this issue, but a couple quick comments: - too many girls who are just plain overweight call themselves "plus sized". to be a real plus sized model you need to be in decent shape and PROPORTIONAL. - i find it annoying to be approached by girls who want to do high fashion but are completely ignorant of the physical requirements of that particular type of modeling, so it falls to me to explain why they can't do it. May 30 05 12:49 am Link Posted by CO Model Amber: lol May 30 05 12:54 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: can I get a soul clap? babycakes, just tell it how it is because there's nothing I love more than honesty-- even when it hurts to hear. May 30 05 01:24 am Link You couldn't be more right! Before my last shoot, I was asked if I wanted to eat a small sandwich, my reply, no because I did not want that little pooch in the gut that you get from eating even the smallest amounts of food. I try to keep up with my appearance, however I have these dark circles under my eyes that no matter what won't go away, and if I get hot they seem to become more noticeable- aahhh!!! Anyways, yeah I have seen many out there who are trying to model who just don't have it. (No offense to anyone, please!) Alexis Jeanne May 30 05 01:33 am Link Posted by Shayuma: No sweety, I wasn't talking about you. May 30 05 02:00 am Link "Worrying about how you look in pictures isn't your main issue." Oh please! EVERY model worries how they look in pictures male or female. May 30 05 06:39 am Link Posted by CO Model Amber: "Concerning eating disorders, if you're in this business for a self esteem boost, or so guys can fawn over you, and you have to resort to sticking your finger down your throat or starving yourself to maintain that, then you're in this business for the wrong reasons and need professional help. Worrying about how you look in pictures isn't your main issue." May 30 05 09:33 am Link Posted by kavonna: Well, I know you have a nice shape, but if you were to hit the gym harder, you would have a PERFECT body. May 30 05 09:45 am Link Posted by Alexis: in my experience, you are correct about the effect of eating right before a shoot. May 30 05 01:27 pm Link Posted by Monsante Bey: Setting aside for a moment that I think this might be a little unrealistic given the pressure in the modeling biz, at least in high fashion, etc.... I wonder why it is that we consider, in this society, *undereating* - even slightly - a disorder, but the overeating - thousands and thousands of calories a day - that is killing us by the hundreds of thousands is not considered a disorder until it gets so grotesque as to be cartoonish? May 30 05 01:30 pm Link Posted by Monsante Bey: I hear you! I'm often amazed at how some of these women have the nerve to present themselves as models and actually expect to get paid. I'm not into skinny, but being large is not an excuse for being out of shape. There's a difference between curvy and sensuous and fat and sloppy. I can kind of understand the extra padding on women over 35 who've had a child or two, but what's with all of these twentysomething plumpers, male and female? This is the fattest country in the world. May 30 05 02:30 pm Link Agreed! There has been a proliferation of women that have been told that they are beautiful, or is that bootyful and should model and yada, yada, so they develope that attitutde that they should be served up on a platter and paid 125/hr for their no experience, I'm hot attitude...Please! Go away with it and as you stated...Modeling is work. Being a photographer is work. Posted by Monsante Bey: May 30 05 02:48 pm Link Take heart! Slight undereating isn't really considered a dfisorder, at least by medical professionals. The critea fro compulsive eating and anorexia nervosa are about equally as strict. Posted by Anthony Citrano: May 30 05 03:30 pm Link My body Is my temple and I am very on top of it everyday. Is really hard when you love pizza so much but it pays off big time.
