i'll tell you at the risk of getting more old fart jokes thrown my way.

it's a long story that i've told here b4, but he's a very good friend of mine.  we graduated from high school together and yes, he's still alive.

he looks so old (he's only 54) for a variety of reasons.  but the most important being that he's been living with a huge burden for about 20 years.  his brother was a wife beater, and Burt (the guy in the image) happened upon his brother beating his wife out in the driveway when burt was going to visit him.  everyone knew that bruce was a wifebeater and nobody aparently cared enough to do anything about it.  on the day in question, burt attempted to pull bruce off of joyce.  bruce had joyce by the throat and was beating her severly about the head and face.  she was not breathing and purple when burt found this scene.  having no way to get bruce off of joyce (bruce was much stronger and bigger), burt grabbed a nearby shovel and swung it at bruce's head, killing him instantly.  burt spent 3 years and mucho thousands of dollars fighting for his freedom.  finally, the case was dismissed and called justifiable homicide.

i was actually offer a fairly tidy sum for the rights to that image.  i turned it down out of respect for burt.  i see his life in those eyes and i wouldn't want the shot to become a stock image somewhere.

you'll absolutely love burt.  through it all, he still has a sense of humor.  but i can still see the pain in his eyes all the time.  when i popped that shot it was all there.  when i got it off the cf card and looked at it, i broke down and cried for a long time.  i only snapped one, and what you see is unedited.
