So one just goes on ebay to find them?

the PC cord for one of my strobes (Starflash) went bad, and the dealer himself told me to consider a wireless setup

They're wonderful!
Not sure what happened to my first 2, but they crapped out at the same time, now on my second set...

Are those receivers compatible with the ebay brands?

The receivers are not cross-compatible. You must get the receiver that matches your transmitter. That said, Gadget Infinity sells several types of "poverty wizard" sets and receivers. Check their website. The may have what you need.

I got the RF-616 model and they work great.  The only problem I ever had with them is when I am in front of the light where BD is used.  I guess metal do black the signal.  Other than that, they work great.

I just got the Cactus V2 set from Gadget Infinity. They are low priced and work great with my Sunpak 383 Super. I have a no name set from Ebay for my studio lights and after two years they are still working fine. Thinking back to the days of sync cords these are a great deal. Nothing more frustrating than a sync cord going bad during a shoot.

Got one for a friend in NYC for her Speedotron 812.  It started free running and flashing the unit continuously.  Think the transmitter was too close to the reciever.  Put the reciever on an extension cord and moved it further away.  Since her budget allowed it she went to PW's and retired the china outfit.  I'll have to pick it up the next time I get there.  Mine works fine if I change batteries when it starts to misfire.

I have been using PW's and although they work great, the $400 price tag hurts.

I'm very happy with my Calumet Litelink system.  Each component converts between transceiver/receiver with the slide of a button.  I'm planning to add on one or two more.

I recommend anyone buying these buy at least 2 sets. If one piece craps out, you still have a backup. Any replacement you buy may not be in the same frequency.

Any particular brand of inexpensive hotshoe adaptor that someone has used and like? I have a XSI that does not have the sync port.

The cheapos work fine on my D300 however.
