Quite a few times. A few are actually in my portfolio.

But I don't understand it.

I've yet to have a model cry rape. I've yet to have a mother usurp the shoot. I've yet to have a testosterone laced teen come after me for photographing his girlfriend. I've yet to converse with them via instant messenger. And I've yet to have the cops beating down my door for questionable content.

What the hell am I doing wrong?

I'm shooting one next weekend. This is the ONLY time I allow (as a matter of fact I make a parent/guardian escort a must) escorts. If Mum or Dad get too cranky, the shoot is done and I make that a Mr. Nixon "perfectly clear" prior to the shoot.

Why in the world would you even reccomend this?? Most commercial and portrait photographers make a decent part of their living taking pictures of "underage" people.

I don't.  Even tho I shoot mainstream stuff, if I were to mix in underage models with some of my other work someone would undoubtedly get the wrong idea.
Just to be safe I keep myself separated.
Were I shooting more commercial & portraiture & such things might be different.
But then I'd have to make choices about other things not to shoot, which's largely why I stopped doing the stuff I found less interesting.

Only for senior or school pics.  never as a "model" and never in a sexy manner.  I leave that for the pediphiles and their list of reasons it's OK.

I shoot models under the age of 18 alot, it's part of the business.  When a specific casting requires a younger model, the client casts a model who fits the part.  Agencies sign under 18 models all the time, what are you going to do, say no to shooting themwhen they need images for their agencies?  I don't know why people on this forum think it's a big deal...

So you think shooting a model who is 16 is for peodphiles?  Is that what you are saying?  You have some serious issues...

I only shoot babies/kids under the age of 18. They can do alot for a portfolio and suck in a lot of clients. EVERY parent thinks their child is DESTINED to be a model. If they're willing to pay, I'm willing to help them further believe their child has a shot smile

Shooting teenagers would do nothing but limit the way I can shoot them. They're children, and 9 times out of 10 it's the teen contacting you and not the parent and they want to be "grown and sexy", and that's a line I'm not willing to cross. Nor do I want to shoot boring pictures. If I shoot a teenager, it's a favor to a family member or friend only. Everyone else, I tell them I only shoot 18+

This is the most ridiculous advice I have ever heard...do you honestly believe that you can make a living as a commercial or fashion photographer while refusing to shoot models under the age of 18??

I think that's the problem; a lot of people don't understand the concept of limits. Others just assume that shooting underage models is a lot more hassle than others -- but it's not. It's an extra signature on the model release, and the presence of a parent at the shoot. And others -- apparently -- can't concieve of beauty that's not overtly sexual.

Since there is so much paranoia about children, maybe we just keep all the children away from all adults. LOL

The last photographer I worked with had a hard time dealing with underage models because one of the 4 underage girls couldn't get her parents to sign the model release forms and she wanted to forge in her parents' names. Very unprofessional.

I work with them all the time and have never ever had an issue. A parent (not just brother or sister - a PARENT or legal guardian) is always required to be at the shoot and sign the release. Everything is done as "age appropriate".

Only one so far, but it went well. Parent present in the  background and didn't interfere with the shoot. Model release signed. No problem. Model is the current avatar.

The irony is is that some of the underagers that I work w/ have been more focused & have a better work ethic than many of those who are of age. Go figure.

No problems here.. Honestly, those that fear it are the one's with issues.. It's not age that's the problem, it's the paranoia created by people about age..

I'm a quinceanera photographer, those who don't know it's when a hispanic girl turns 15, most of her court of 28 kids are 14-16 year olds. When she gets her official quinceanera location portrait, heaven forbid she's only 14. I work with some local kids pageants ages toddlers to 19 years of age, also Miss New Mexico Teen USA was a client of mine at the ripe old age of 17. And i shot a 9 year old ballerina in her dance studio yesterday, and later today have two seventeen year olds for headshots. Alot of my senior portrait kids are still only seventeen when they leave high school. What's the fricken controversy of working with underage kids, if their parents are there at the shoot?
