::: a question for photogs, about models "shaving":::
**inspired by a posting about "waxing", a thought popped into my head**... ok..this might seem out of bounds, but it is a question i ask of my glamour and nude models all the time...also, its a legitmate issue in the industry... the glamour/artistic photographer side of me, likes to have a bit more modesty to my images..not liking "in your face" type images, i prefer pubic hair, not "winter bush", mind you but a neatly kept region. it allows me to pose the model in more ways, without revealing everything, plus i think its more feminine..more sexy..something left to the imagination plus with growing up in the 70's, "shaving everything"..it reminds me of porn..they were the first with the trend..(yeah i've seen porn, i knew it when i saw it..) so my question...am i alone here? Jun 26 05 04:02 pm Link Most of the figure photographers who've expressed a preference to me have asked that I not completely shave my pubic area. I agree that it usually looks better. Jun 26 05 04:08 pm Link I think any pubic hair on a man or woman is disgusting.but then again I have an aversion to body&pubic hair. but I can see your point for nude models.but then again if a model has a tightly wrapped package as opposed to "camel toe" it wouldn't be gaping even w/ the legs slightly spread. Jun 26 05 04:14 pm Link Good thing to bring up. While my personal views about this I'll keep to myself, I suggest for models to have hair. I don't mean huge bush, but a well kept who-who. There is a reason... as many who are pro-shooters know. It's common for a bit of "moisture" to form throughout a show or shoot. Nothing is so embarrasing as to "leave a mess" in the clothing. The hair acts as a barrier between the model's "stuff" and the clothing. I can't tell you how many models I've known that bought swimwear bottoms rather than turned them back in after a show/shoot. Further, it also shows everything God gave a woman if they submerge in water. I hope this has been helpful. christian Jun 26 05 04:44 pm Link Posted by Mistress Purgatori: I do love Camel Toe Sally on Conan. Jun 26 05 04:47 pm Link It's amusing to see the vagina referred to as a who-who and who-ha. Some feminists would say that such references demean women. I taught my children, from the very beginning, to use the words penis and vagina. Anyway, that's another thread for another site. Both shaved and unshaved, within reason, have their artistic merits as far as nude photography is concerned. When we're communicating in preparation for a shoot, I always say this to models: If you don't have a Brazilian bikini wax, your pubic region should be neatly trimmed without excessive mass and with hair not extending out toward your thighs or up toward your navel. That's the only preference that I've ever stated, but most models have shown up shaved. I agree that the "landing strip" is unsightly. Jun 26 05 05:03 pm Link Maybe we should list all the names. Jun 26 05 05:05 pm Link Posted by marksora: dont hi-jack my thread..start your own..call it "name your private parts".. Jun 26 05 05:07 pm Link If anyone has read any of my previous posts, I really dislike shaved models. I can understand the "bikini trim" but this modern practice of shaving oneself back to pre-puberty is something beyond my grasp. I won't go into what I think of it in sexual terms... Photographically speaking, I prefer a model to have some pubic hair. Women are women - not little girls. There's a sensuality to a woman who LOOKS like a woman. After all, when we are photographing a nude woman, part of what we are photographing is her sensuality (for the most part). If she's a figure model, then you are photographing her form and pubic hair is part of both of these. I agree, pubic hair can be used rather well in posing/shadows/etc. I am totally amazed at how many models do shave themselves these days. In fact, it's downright hard to find one who isn't! Just my 0.02. -Rowen Jun 26 05 05:10 pm Link Posted by Doug Swinskey: Posted by marksora: dont hi-jack my thread..start your own..call it "name your private parts".. Party pooper. Jun 26 05 05:14 pm Link A lot of women shave because they find it more confortable. I guess its a good think that you think a shaven woman's genitals look like a little girls' genitals, because that shows you really haven't compared. Jun 26 05 05:15 pm Link Posted by theda: Compared what - or compared to what? I'm certainly not interested in *comparing* a little girls genitals! Besides, I do believe there's laws about that stuff for people my age! Jun 26 05 06:43 pm Link I wanna add my two cents!! Well, I admit to shaving as much as I can, especially in the warmer months. I hate climbing into a bikini and finding out I missed a spot.... kinda gets me a bit embarassed. And I have very pale skin, so that adds to the possible embarassment. I, however, dont aim to post nude in any photographs, so there's one reason why I wouldnt have to. I do find shaving comfortable and I dont normally get razorburn. I'm more worried about razorburn on my legs or armpits more than my nether regions, thanks. Now, about the 'landing strip' style...... I personally think that if they are going to shave it like that, shave it off all the way. I admit, I do. Sorry for the TMI but there ya go. Why? Because I dont really like the idea of posing in a thong or bikini and having something peeking out..... again with the embarassment factor. Jun 26 05 07:05 pm Link Because I dont really like the idea of posing in a thong or bikini and having something peeking out..... again with the embarassment factor. A couple of years ago I was at a female friends house for a summer pool party. My friend has a great body and one of the smallest bikini's I've ever seen painted on a woman. She is also very *proper*. Jun 26 05 08:06 pm Link Posted by FarrIL: your's has eyes???? now you freaken scaring me.... Jun 26 05 10:14 pm Link I have never shot any nudes but my personal opinion is a woman with neatly trimmed pubic hair is definately senseous (I know I spelled that wrong) but I am not opposed to a landing strip or completely shaven either. Jun 26 05 10:35 pm Link I think I should test out all the theories. Okay, I need someone to tell me to go to sleep. It is a ritual of sorts. Jun 27 05 12:59 am Link Go to sleep Marksora Jun 27 05 01:19 am Link I'm sure I'm a minority of one around here, but the last model I considered paying not only didn't shave her pubic region, but also kept her legs and underarms "au naturel"...I wonder what it says about our society when a woman's natural appearance has become a fetish. PS: The only reason i didn't hire her was that she cancelled her trip north from Florida...I'm still hoping she'll make it up this way before long. Jun 27 05 01:46 am Link Well, I do shoot a lot of nudes, and I'd say the past few years the majority of my models have been completely shaved. There's really nothing new about this, look at any book of 1920s-30s nudes, same thing; supposedly because showing pubic hair was a violation of postal regs at that time. Styles just run in cycles. If I had to state a preference, I'd say lose all the hair... but it's not a big deal either way. And I'll let you in on a little secret; a lot of male athletes shave too, especially triathletes. Ever get hair caught in a wetsuit? Jun 27 05 01:48 am Link I wonder what it says about our society when a woman's natural appearance has become a fetish. Amen! Jun 27 05 01:57 am Link My Main goal is to just shoot "people". I don't know whether the model is Shaved/Trimmed/Natural until we are there and they shed thier 'skin'. I really have no personal opinion, one way or another. If she/he had (my) *IT* when I started talking to them. Then whatever hair they have is what they have and defines 'them'. If a model or even a 'tog' wants to style their nether-hair. ---Good luck with it, I hope it works out.. LOL Jun 27 05 02:03 am Link Posted by Mistress Purgatori: !!! Camel Toe? Alright. I'm not hip with this terminology. W'sup with this slang? Do Camel's even have toes?! It's hoofs, or hooves. Right? Somebody hit me with a cluestick! I'm like, "wtf are these people talking about with the camel toe?" Jun 27 05 02:10 am Link LOL, this is hilarious. You know...since it is mostly photogs talking...don't any of you shave...you know..for your woman/man?? I would have to say on a man...he should shave a few things too!! Thought I would mention that. McK Jun 27 05 04:19 am Link Howdy Folks! A while back I found some old 70's era Playboy and Penthouse magazines in my attic (from previous owner of course and looked through them.. it was fascinating to see the pubic hair fashion of that era.. full bushes and in a lot of photos hair actually looked like it was fluffed and styled to make it 'poofier'.. i guess what made it so fascinating is that is totally opposite of pubic hair fashion today... guess my point is ... its all good... I'm just glad to be there... ~~ Happy Holidays ! Mikey.. p.s believe it or not there is a website.. www.cameltoe.com ......it is awesome ! Jun 27 05 07:30 am Link Hehe - thanks for this thread... It's hilarious to read... But from my experience models were asking me exact this thing on how to shave before the shooting. Well, since I run most of the pics through the computer anyway I prefer the complete cut. It's easier for me to add digital hair than to take actual hair away if it suits the picture. By the way - this counts for guys too... Jun 27 05 07:43 am Link Your data in no resembles mine. Shaving has been the fashion in adult work for well over five years, more like 15. But really, how often does comfort dictate women's fashion anyway? I can't speak for all women of course, but I know why I shave and I know why most of my female friends shave and it is about personal comfort and I guess we must be brilliantly talented because razor burn isn't really an issue. Posted by Rowen: Jun 27 05 10:06 am Link I sell fine art limited edition nudes and unshaven outsells shaven easily 20 to 1. Jun 27 05 10:53 am Link |
