If I see one more "your beautiful" or "your hot" on this website I might have a brain aneurysm. Your is an adjective...you use it to describe something that belongs to someone as in "your face is beautiful." You're is the proper word..."you're hot" You're = you are. It's an extra two characters...it's not that much of a hassle. Does this drive anyone else nuts?

your
( P )  Pronunciation Key  (yr, yôr, yr; yr when unstressed)
adj.
The possessive form of you.
Used as a modifier before a noun: your boots; your accomplishments.
A person's; one's: The light switch is on your right.
Informal. Used with little or no sense of possession to indicate a type familiar to the listener: your basic three-story frame house.

Hopefully this clears some things up for everyone.  And yes, it is an adjective...and I'm going to be an English teacher!

pronoun subject She likes homework.
object The teacher gave me some homework.
possessive This homework is yours.
reflexive John did the homework himself.
possessive adjective The teacher corrected our homework.

It can be used as a possessive pronoun.

I hate to burst your bubble, but if you're going to give an english lesson, you need to at least know what you're talking about.  The word "your" is not an adjective, it's a pronoun. Sorry.

Now that's funny!  Correcting the corrector.  Classic.

It drives me crazy. It isn't hard to figure out guys.. If your sentence calls for the contraction "you're" then try saying the sentence with the two words "you are".

Example:

You're hot.

Your hot.

Okay so which is it guys?

You are hot.

Your hot.

Try it sometime. It works with all the other contractions (they're, it's, etc.)... yikes)

In this case, "your"vs. "you're," Kaitlin was correct.  This is an adjective.  No need to hate on her.  It's only a poss. pronoun when we are saying yours.  This tiny thread is hilarious!

Common Syntax Errors that Really Grind my Gears:

1. There.  Their.  They're.

"They're in there with their poodle."  Got it?  Good.

2.  Than/Then

PLEASE PEOPLE.  This is totally elementary (school, literally!)

"I'd rather die than give you control." Comparison
"If you don't, then I will."  Clause

3.....

ahh screw it I'm boring myself.

Either you're or your IS acceptable, according to the Websters Dictionary... not "are," since the subject is a choice of two singulars.

These are not mistakes.
In the English speaking world  'colour' and 'theatre' is correct.
here in the US we say f.. it, we spell it as we want!
We have also killed the difference between  'centre' and 'center'

Only learned scholars can tell the difference between gray and grey.

The MM crowd is quickly killing whatever dignity is left in the language.
Myspace has already pronounced the english language deceased.

It is the new paradigm, stupidity is the norm.
The ashole response is "so what , u understand what I am saying"
NO! we don't !

I see it on tags all the time but I agree that as long as you understand what is being said then I would let it go.  I once had someone here ask me to call them on their cellulite phone.

English spelling is chaotic and hard to learn, so I'm tolerant of those who get it wrong.  Anyway, with the internet, phonetic spellings are only going to increase.

But I hope someone is teaching standard English grammar and spelling...in case somebody wants to get a job one day!
