I started out doing makeup for exotic dancers about 6 years ago, the adult industry pays well and i don't think i would have a problem applying makup on women for that venue, but thats just me. I am rather good at the porn star makeup so, and considering i don't have any moral hangups over the adult industry i would do the makeup, as long as it was for a reputable company such as VIVID.

Would the MUA's responding in the negative be willing to do makeup for a corporate photo/video shoot of Bernard Madoff (he's ruined many people financially, and probably contributed to several suicides)?  What is the difference between that, and doing makeup for an "adult" shoot (photo or video)...with a professional photo staff, or even a GWC?  You're not participating in the activities of the models....just doing the makeup....

AMEN! As long as the check clears! I'd do a corporate video, or an adult video, and anything in between. For a rate. Period.

My friend did makeup for a strip club. All the girls were required to tip her $20 each, even if they didn't get makeup. There were 60 girls on some nights. The slow nights there were 20 girls on. plus she learned how to do an entire face in 15 - 20 mins.

Would you consider Vivid unreputable?  Or any more unreputable then Playboy or Penthouse or even Hustler?  Maybe you are mixing feelings or personal beliefs versus what is considered "reputable".  I may not agree with porn, but that is my personal belief.

Ditto.  I've done stills shots for those types of productions. I wouldn't be judgmental until I knew more about the project and if I were the shooter requesting a MUA, I might be a tad insulted if someone implied I was somehow unprofessional due just to the nature of the shoot.   On Adult shoots, One of the more delicate issues is BODY MAKEUP.  People have blemishes, scars and bruises in places that distract from 'the action' usually the bottom, hips and legs  ... sometimes the arms.   You need a skilled MUA to keep the damned body makeup from wearing off.  LOL  But a gonzo shooter would not care about this.  So that seems counter intuitive to a 'cheap home movie style' shoot.

Also a lot of those 'stunning' vid Stars are pretty shocking when they show up with no makeup.  I was at a big club one day (visiting my friend the day manager in the upstairs office) when the 'feature dancer' (a well known Vivid girl) showed up on the day of their three day feature dancing gig.  All the employees thought she was a  homeless junkie who got lost.   The doorman almost called the police when she wouldn't go away ... LOL.    But she brought her own MUA with her and the transformation was stunning.  From hideous homeless looking person to feature dancer!  I would have loved to have been able to get some 'before and after' pics for the MUA ....

This is interesting.  It is hard to tell if you passed on the gig because of the subject matter or because of the dude's approach.

Every person in every profession has a right to work on (or not) projects that they feel comfortable with.  Everyone has a right to turn down work (except a medical doctor I guess) if they simply don't like the gig.

As a photographer, I would decline to shoot porn.  Why?  It is not me and it is not something I wish to do.  There a many others that do shoot it and likely do damn good and professional job of it.  That said, I also don't wish to do weddings.  I have turned them down repeatedly.  Again, not my thing.   

But, ask yourself this:  IF the gig involved you coming to the set, applying the makeup and then leaving the room to go watch TV for (some duration) in another room and then come back in and reapply make-up as needed, would you do the gig then?

i like my job.  that's just one of the down side.  but i'm not going out of my way to do a job where juices could have been smudged on just about everything you touch on set.

I don't have a major problem with it IF its above board and professional.  Its just like any other job.  I take a book and read while the models do their job and then step in to do mine.

I'm a little confused. Every time I've ever used a makeup artist, they help out during the shoot by watching for hair out of place, problems with the clothing, etc., not only for makeup issues. Simple professionalism and determination to be as helpful as possible. Same thing on major celebrity shoots, where I have assisted, even when there are separate hair and styling people present. If I hired an MUA and the MUA thought the time ... that I paid for ... should be used for recreational reading, it would be the last time THAT MUA worked for me.
